अभ त्त्वशुद्धिर्ज्ञानयोगव्यव्थिति:
दानं दमश्च ज्ञश्च ्वाध्यायस्तप र्जवम्
श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता 16.1

Abhayam sattva-sanshuddhir-gyaana-yoga-vyavas-thitih
Daanam damash-cha yagyash-cha svaadhyaayas-tapa aarjavam.

अहिंसा त्यमक्रोधस्त्याग: शान्तिरपैशुनम्
दया भूतेष्वलोलुप्त्वं मार्दवं ह्रीरापलम्

Ahimsaa satyam-akrodhas-tyaagaḥ shaantir-apaishunam.
Dayaa bhooteṣh-valo-luptvam maardavam hreer-achaapalam.

तेज: क्षमा धृति: शौचमद्रोहोनातिमानिता
भव्ति म्पदं दैवीमभिजातस्य भार

Tejah kshamaa dhritih shaucham-adroho-naati-maanitaa.
Bhavanti sampadam daiveem-abhi-jaatasya bhaarata.

Characteristics of good people

  1. Fearlessness – abhayam
  2. Purity of mind – sattva samshruddhi
  3. Knowledge – gyaana
  4. Physical discipline – yoga
  5. Steadfastness (of character) – vyavasthitih
  6. Charity – daanam
  7. Control of the senses – damah
  8. Selfless sacrifice (doing for others) – yagya
  9. Study of the sacred books – svaadhyaaya
  10. Austerity – tapah
  11. Integrity, honesty, sincerity – aarjavam
  12. Non-violence – ahimsaa
  13. Truthfulness  – satyam
  14. Absence of anger – akrodha
  15. Renunciation (of attachment; of desires like lust) – tyaaga
  16. Peacefulness – shaantih
  17. Restraint from fault-finding; non-slander (Do not judge others) – apeshunaam
  18. Compassion – dayaa
  19. Absence of covetousness – alolupatva
  20. Gentleness – maardavam
  21. Modesty; a sense of shame; conscience – hreeh
  22. Lack of fickleness; able to focus – achaapalam
