Family welfare verses

सहृदयं सांमनस्यमविद्वेषं कृणोमि वः। 
अन्यो अन्यमभिहर्यत वत्सं जातमिवाघ्न्या॥

Sa-hridayam saam-manasyam-
avidvesham kriṇomi vah.
Anyo anyam-abhi-haryata
vatsam jaatam-iva-aghnyaa.¹

Live with sincerity and unity. Live in harmony, without wishing or causing injury to others. Remain connected with each other, and comfort and protect each other like a good mother loves and protects her offspring.

सहृदयम् sincerely, with the heart साम्मनस्य harmony, concord अविद्वेष non-enmity (विद्वेष contempt, dislike, hatred, aversion) कृणोमि do, undertake वः you अन्य another, other person, others अन्यमभिहर्यत love each other अन्यं other, another person अभिहर्यति – love like, be near, love वत्सम् love each other अन्यं other, another person अभिहर्यति love like, be near, love जातमिवाघ्न्या Be like the loving cow that loves and protects her offspring. जात become इव like अघ्न्य काऊ (gentle and loving to calf)

अनुव्रतः पितुः पुत्रो मात्रा भवतु संमनाः।
जाया पत्ये मधुमतीं वाचं वदतु शान्तिवाम्॥

Anuvratah pituh putro
maatraa bhavatu sam-manaah.
Jaayaa patye madhumateem
vaacham vadatu shaantivaam.²

May the children’s minds be concordant with the mind of Parents. May the children obey the wise commands of the parents and may the parents speak honestly, sweetly and gently to each other and to children.

अनुव्रतः be faithful to, devoted to, obedient पितुः father पुत्रो sons, children मात्रा mother भवतु be it so, very well संमनाः sons, children जाया women, wife, spouse पत्ये spouse, husband मधुमत् sweet, agreeable, pleasant (मधु) वाच speech (ability to talk), oratory skills वदतु speak, intonation शान्तिवाम् friendly, peaceful, benevolent

मा भ्राता भ्रातरं द्विक्षन्‌ मा स्वसारमुत स्वसा।
सम्यञ्च: सव्रता भूत्वा वाचं वदत भद्रया॥

Maa bhraataa bhraataram dvikshan
maa svasaaramuta svasaa.
Sam-yaǹchah savrataa bhootvaa
vaacham vadata bhadrayaa.³

Let there be no ill-will between siblings. May the respect multiply within the home. May all enjoy a harmonious relationship, and may sweet words unify the family.

मा do not भ्राता brother भ्रातरम् among, between brothers (siblings) द्विक्षन्‌ double, increase स्वसारमुत within the home स्वसा sister (ष्वसा) सम्यञ्च: truly, completely, by all means सव्रता harmonious भूत्वा having existed, having been enjoyable वाचम् speech (ability to talk), oratory skills वदत speak, intonation भद्रया joyfully, happily

येन देवा न वियन्ति नो च विद्विषते मिथः।
तत्कृण्मो ब्रह्म वो गृहे संज्ञानं पुरुषेभ्यः॥

Yena devaa na viyanti 
no cha vidviṣhate mithah.
Tat-kriṇmo brahma vo grihe
sangyaanam puruṣhebhyah.⁴

The illuminated God empowers us to go through life without hate and without dislike for each other. May the Supreme Creator remove any injurious or negative thought or intent among everyone within the home.

येन that which देवा wise persons, illuminated, God न no, not वियन्ति go through (go through life); proceed through नो to us च and विद्विषते dislike, hate, angry at मिथः with each other तत्‌ कृन्मो that negative thought, or injurious act or intent ब्रह्म God, creator वो you, yours गृहे at home, in-home, within home संज्ञानं unanimity, harmony पुरुषेभ्यः for the men, for the people, for the ones

ज्यायस्वन्तश्चितिनो मा वियौष्ट संराधयन्तः सधुराश्चरन्तः।
अन्यो अन्यस्मै वल्गु वदन्त एत सध्रीचीनान्‌ वः संमनसस्कृणोमि॥

Jyaayas-van-tashchi-tino maa viyovṣhṭa
samraadhi-antah sadhura-ashchar-antah.
Anyo anyasmai valgu vadanta
eta sadhree-cheenaan vah sammansas-kriṇomi.⁵

Always show your respect for the wise and elderly ones within the home. Always be united in honour to your elders. Always display a beautiful countenance for each other within the home. Let your goals and journey to your goals be in harmony and be successful.

ज्यायस्वन्तश्चितिनो All of the elders and wise (superior) ones ज्यायस् – superior, elder, having a superior (ज्यायस्वत्) मा do not वियौष्ट going through glowingly संराधयन्तः success and achievement within (the home) संराद्धि accomplishment, success अन्तः within, inside, in सधुराश्चरन्तः wonderful togetherness within all सधुर agreeing together अन्यो अन्य another, other person, others अन्यस्मै for the other, for each other वल्गु beautiful, lovely वदन्त countenance, as is said एत this सध्रीचीनान्‌ pursuing the same goal, united वः you संमनसस्कृणोमिan undertaking of respect and honor सम्मनन honor, respect कृण – क्रिय act of, undertaking

समानी प्रपा सह वोऽन्नभाग: समाने योक्त्रे सह वो युनज्मि।
सम्यञ्चोऽग्निं सपर्यतारा नाभिमिवाभित:॥

Samaanee prapaa saha vo-annabhaagah
samaane yoktre saha vo yunajmi.
Samyaṅcho’gnim saparya-taaraa
naabhi-mivaa-bhitah.⁶

Let your ample supply of water and food be from a common source. Let your common needs be joined together so that all can share equally. Share your water and food. May you all get along together, be honorable and honor everyone like the spokes of a wheel that stand firm and united for a common purpose.

समानी common, alike, also uniform, universal, all प्रपा source (ample supply of water), e.g. a well सह with वोऽन्नभाग: Ample supply of food अन्न food, grains भाग portion, share समाने common, alike, also uniform, universal, all योक्त्र tied, bound, fastened to सह with वो yours युनज्मि joined together from root युज् – active, to join सम्यञ्चोऽग्निं firmly getting along with सम्यञ्च् getting along with सपर्यतारा सपर्यति honor, adore (also worship) नाभिमिवाभित: like a wheel connected on all sides (by spokes) नाभि wheel, also – relationship (not to be confused with other usage नाभि is also navel) इव like अभितः on all sides, near

सध्रीचीनान्‌ वः सम्मनसस्कृणोम्येकश्नुष्टीन्त्संवननेन सर्वान्‌।
देवा इवा अमृतं रक्षमाणाः सायं प्रातः सौमनसो वो अस्तु॥

Sadhee-cheenaan vah samanasas-kriṇomi
ekash-nuṣhṭi-antsam-vana-nena sarvaan
Devaa iva amritam rakshamaaṇaah
saayam-praatah soumanaso vo astu.⁷

Be untied in pursuing common goals for the benefit of everyone. Let your aims and thoughts be reconcilable. May your kindness towards each other earn the eternal protection of the Lord. May you look out for each other every day, all the time.

सध्रीचीनान्‌ pursuing the same goal, united वः you सम्मनसस्कृणोम्येकश्नुष्टीन्त्संवननेन acquire a similar undertaking and like thoughts सम्मनस् unanimous कृणोमि to have the undertaking (क्रिया – an undertaking, an act of worship) आश्नुते arrive at, gain, obtain वनस् desire सर्वान्‌ all देवा god इवा like अमृत eternity, immortality, nectar रक्षमाणाः care and protection सायम् evening (and nights) प्रातः morning, dawn सौमनसो kindness, satisfaction वो you अस्तु may be so
