Svasti Vaachanam1: Prayers for Bliss and Prosperity

अग्निमीडे पुरोहितं ाज्यस्य देवमृत्विजम्
होतारं रत्नधातमम्
Agnim-eeḍe purohitam yajyasya devam ritvijam
Hotaaram ratna dhaatamam.2

Agnimeede3 I admire and adore that force of energy which purohitam4 existed even before this cycle of creation. The hotaaram5, the One who, within Himself hosts/produces the yajyasya creative power that devam enlightens all and is the light of the world. That ratnadhaatamam6 sustainer of the cosmic gems like the planets is always ritvijam worthy of our worship.

पितेव ूनवेऽग्ने ूपायनो भव
स्वा ्व्तये
Sa nah piteva soonave ‘gne
soopaayano bhava.
Sachas-vaa nah svastaye.7

Sa nah piteva He is like father to soonave us his children with agne soopaayano bhava his blissful wisdom and power always easily accessible. Grant sachasva unity (of wisdom and power) nah swastaye for our welfare.

्व्ति मिमीतामश्विना भगः ्व्ति देव्यदितिर्वणः
्व्ति पूषा असुरो दधातु ्व्ति द्यावापृथिवी ुचेतुना
Svasti no mimeetaam ashvina bhagah
svasti dev-ya-ditir anar-vaṇah.
Svasti pooṣhaa asuro dadhaatu naḥ
svasti dyaavaa prithivee suchetunaa.8

May there be swasti peace and well-being from the stars, sun and moon and bhagah pure atmosphere as is the swasti peace and bliss from the devyaaditir­ goddess-like earth that is firm and indestructible and yet anarvanah always in motion. May we be swasti pooshaa asuro dadhaatunah reinvigorated and healthy through the scientific exploration of the clouds/atmosphere, the cosmos and the earth/nature.

्व्तये वाुमुप ब्रवामहै ोमं ्व्ति भुव्य ्पतिः
बृहस्पतिं र्वगणं ्व्तये ्व्तय दित्यासो भव्तु
Svastaye vaayum-upa bravaa-mahai
somam svasti bhuvanasya yaspatih.
Brihas-patim sarva-gaṇam svastaye
svastaya-aadityaaso bhavantu nah.9

May the vaayum atmosphere, somam the moon, bhoovanasya yaspatih the sun and all of creation upa bravaamahai disseminate swasti bliss and well-being to us. May brihaspatih the Protector of the world who sarvaganam sustains all of life as well as guide aadityaaso­ the wise scholars swastaye bhavantu nah be for our welfare.

विश्वे देव अद्य ्व्तये वैश्वानरो ुरग्निः ्व्तये
देव अव्त्वृभवः ्व्तये ्व्ति रुद्रः पात्वंहसः
Vishve devaa no adyaa svastaye
vaish-vaanaro vasur-agnih svastaye.
Devaa avant-vribhavah svastaye
svasti no rudrah paatavam-hasah.10

May the vishvedevaa learned persons be swastaye empowered by the vaishvaanaro vasur agni sciences of the omnipresent energy and force fields adyaa present at all times. May the devaa avant vribhavah swastaye creative minds and learned person be protected for our welfare. May there be swasti peace for us and may rudra the punisher of the wicked paatavam hasah prevent us from sins (and punishment).

्व्ति मित्रावरुणा ्व्ति पथ्ये रेवति
्व्ति इन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च ्व्ति अदिते कृधि
Svasti mitraa-varuṇaa svasti pathye revati.
Svasti na indrash-cha-agnish-cha
svasti no adite kridhi.11

May the mitravaruna friendly vital air and waters be swastaye fulfilling and purposeful, pathye always causing our luxury and comfort. May the indraashchaagni electricity, raindrops and natural energy that are adite all-knowing/all-purposeful kridhi be beneficial to us.

्व्ति पन्थामनु ेम ूर्याचन्द्रमसाविव
पुनर्ददताघ्नता जानता मेमहि
Svasti panthaam-anu charema
sooryaa chandrama saaviva.
Punar-dadataagh-nataa

jaanataa sangame-mahi.12

Like the swasti pantham anucharema soorya the sun and moon delightfully (dutifully) keeping to their path and purpose, so may we punah again and again (always), remain dadataagnata charitable, peace-loving (non-violent), jaanata knowledgeable and wise and maintain sangame mahi­ good company. 

 

Shaanti-karanam Prayers for Peace and Harmony

शं इन्द्राग्नी भवतामवोभिः शं इन्द्रावरुणा रातहव्या
शमिन्द्रासोमा ुविताय शं शं इन्द्रापूषणा वाजसातौ
Shan na indra-agni bhavataam-avobhih
shan na indraa-varuṇaa raat-havyaa.
Sham-indraa-somaa suvitaaye shanyoh
shan na indraa-pooṣhaṇaa vaaja-saatau.13

May the sham necessary indraagni14 excellent and pure energy and electricity bhavataam be always avobhih protected and assured. May the necessary indraa varunaa pure waters be always raatahavya in full supply. May the sham relief-giving indra somaa purified medicines suvitaaya shanyoh provide for our peace and well-being, may the sham vital indraa pooshanaa pure and excellent air assure our vaajasaatau crops and wealth.

शं भगः शमु शं अस्तु शं पुर्धिः शमु ्तु रायः
शं त्य्य ुयमस्य शं शं अर्यमा पुरुजातो अस्तु
Shan no bhagah shamu nah shanso astu
shan nah purandhih shamu santu raayah.
Shan nah satyasya suyam-asya shansah
shan no aryamaa purujaato astu.

May our bhagah prosperity (through healthy environment), shan sah prayers and well wishes astu be blessed. May our purandhih elevated intellect and raayah riches be samu nah auspiciousness/conducive to our success. May satyasya truthful speech be suyamasya based on noble intentions and bring us welfare. May those aryamaa entrusted with justice be of purujaatah wide fame and prove auspicious to us.

शं धाता शमु धर्ता अस्तु शं उरूची भवतु ्वधाभिः
शं रोदसी बृहती शं अद्रिः शं देवां ुहवानि ्तु
Shan no dhaataa shamu dhartaa no astu
shan no uroochee bhavatu svadhaa-bhih.
Shan rodasee brihatee shan no adrih
shan no devaanaam suhavaani santu.16

God is the dhaataa Supporter and Nourisher, He dhartaa sustains everything sham nah for our benefit, thus the uruchee earth astu gets filled with svadaabhih nourishment and necessities (to support life) as is the rodasee atmosphere and the brihatee adrih vast clouds. And, the devaanaam learned ones constantly engage in suhavaani santu beautiful and positive thoughts.

शं अग्निर्ज्योतिरीको अस्तु शं मित्रावरुणावश्विना शम्।
शं ुकृतां ुकृतानि ्तु शं इषिरो अभिवातु वातः
Shan no agnir-jyotir-aneeko astu
shan no mitraa-varuṇaa-vashvinaa sham.
Shan nah sukṛitaam sukṛitaani santu
shan na iṣhiro abhi-vaatu vaatah.17

The astu existence of agni purposeful energy and jyotiranika spectrum of light is for our purpose. The mitraavaruna18 alliance between the waters and the ashvinaa sun, moon and other celestial bodies are for our benefit. The sukritaam benevolence of sukritaani good conduct santu is sham nah for our benefit. The vaatah weather undergo ishirah constant change and abhivaatu effect sham nah</em> for our benefit.

शं द्यावापृथिवी पूर्वहूतौ शमन्तरिक्षं दृशये अस्तु
शं ओषधीर्विनो भव्तु शं राजसस्पतिर्तु जिष्णुः
Shan no dyaavaa pṛithivee poorva hootau
sham-antariksham dṛishaye no astu.
Shan na oṣhadheer vanino bhavantu
shan no rajasas-patir-astu jiṣhṇuh.19

O rajasaspatih Master of the Universe astu jushnuh you are acclaimed all over as our benefactor. Bless us so that poorva hootau most importantly, may dyaavaa prithivee earth and the entire solar system, the antariksham atmosphere and space all, drishaye with clarity, sham nah astu bring us peace and prosperity. May the oshadheeh vaninah medicinal plants be beneficial to us.

शं इन्द्र ुभिर्देवो अस्तु शमादित्येभिर्वरुणः ुशंसः
शं रुद्रो रुद्रेभिर्जलाषः शं ास्त्वष्टा ग्नाभिरिह शृणोतु
Shan na indro vasubhir-devo astu
sham-aaditye-bhir varuṇah sushansah.
Shan no rudro rudre-bhir-jalaaṣhah
shan nas-tvaṣhṭaa gnaa-bhir-iha shriṇotu.20

May indra the sun with its vasubhih life-giving attributes bring us comfort. May the sushamsah excellent process in the aadityebhih influence of the sun of the seasons and varunah waters/oceans be beneficial to us. May rudra the life-giving God, rudrebhih in his assessment and judgement, bring us benevolence. May the tvashtaa Creator gnaabhih iha shrinotu listen to us (our worship) for our bliss.

शं ोमो भवतु ब्रह्म शं शं ग्रावाणः शमु ्तु ज्ञाः
शं वरूणां मितयो भव्तु शं प्रवः शम्व्तु वेदिः
Shan nah somo bhavatu brahma shan nah
shan no graavaaṇah shamu santu yajyaah.
Shan nah svarooṇaam mitayo bhavantu
shan nah prasavah sham-vastu vedih.21

May the soma medicinal elements bhavantu be of brahma super quality (as designed by Brahma the creator) to be sham nah beneficial to us. May our graavaanah positive intentions and actions sham u santu yajyaa and may our selfless sacrifices be only for our overall welfare. May the svaroonaam mitayah established basis of our sacrifices be for prasavah posterity and sham u astu only bring us peace on this vedih pedestal of life.

  3. Agni is the first subject of the Rig Veda. The first section (Sukta 1) of the Rig Veda addresses this Agni and is referred to as the Agni Suktam which starts with the mantra agnim eede putohitam and ends with Sa nah piteva soonave. The agni suktam contains 9 verses.
  4. Most translators infer purohitam as the performer of yajya (yajyasya). However, philosophically set within its context, purohitam infers that which is in front – or at the forefront.
