Blessing by father to the Child
The father (parent) touches the head of the child with the following three mantras.
ओम् अङ्गादङ्गात्सम्भवसि हृदयादविधजायसे।
आत्मा वै पुत्रनामासि य जीव शरदः शतम् ॥
Angaa-dangaat-sam-bhavasi
hridayaa-davidha-jaayase
Aatmaa vai putraamaasi
ya jeeva sharadah shatam.1
O beloved child of ours, your physical aspects are of us, your parents, and your soul is of eternity. We pray for your long and healthy life. May your mind and soul always be cognizant of the Almighty God.
अङ्ग component, constituent, limb, contiguous सम्भव birth, occurrence हृदय heart, center दविध dual जायसे born, originate आत्मा self, soul वै and, of पुत्रनामन् child having a name य light, fame जीव life शरदः year, annual, autumn शतम् hundred
ओम् प्रजापतेष्ट्वा हिङ्करेणावजिघ्रामि ।
सहस्रायुषाऽसौ जीव शरद: शतम् ॥
Om prajaapateṣh-ṭvaa hinkaareṇaava-jighraami.
Sahasra-ayuṣhaa’sau jeeva sharadah shatam.2
Oh beloved child of ours! We adore you and your cute baby sounds. May the Almighty God continue to bless you as you grow. May you live a long and healthy life.
प्रजापतेः god हिङ्करेण the affectionate cooing sound of a young, seeking its mother/parent जिघ्र smelling, observing सहस्रायुषा a long time, thousands असौ (name of person), that जीव life शरदः year, annual, autumn शतम् hundred (long time)
गवां त्वा हिङ्करेणावजिघ्रामि ।
सहस्रायुषाऽसौ जीव शरद: शतम् ॥
Gavaam tvaam hinkaareṇaava-jighraami.
Sahasra-ayuṣhaa’sau jeeva sharadah shatam.3
O beloved baby, we love your adorable nature and cute baby sounds. We are blessed to be your parents. May you be blessed with a long and healthy life.
गवां speech, cow त्वा your हिङ्करेण the affectionate cooing sound of a young, seeking its mother/parent जिघ्र smelling, observing सहस्रायुषा a long time, thousands असौ (name of person), that जीव life शरदः year, annual, autumn शतम् hundred
The Mother, Father, and child are together (the Mother holds the child in front of her, the father in front of the child) as the following prayers for family togetherness, health, and prosperity are chanted at the right and left side of the child, signifying the favor of God flowing from all sides. (Let the head of the child remain northwards)
The following verse is recited at the right side of the child:
अस्मे प्र यन्धि मघवन्नृजीषिन्निन्द्र रायो विश्ववारस्य भूरेः।
अस्मे शतम् शरदों जीवसें धा अस्मे वीरांछश्चत इन्द्र शिप्रिन् ॥
Asme pra yandhi maghavann-rijeeṣhinn-indra
raayo vishvaarasya bhooreh.
Asme shatam sharadȯ jeevase
dhaa asme veeraam-chhashvata indra shiprin.4
O Almighty Lord, you are the One who blesses and protects us by removing negative forces from our lives. We worship you and seen your blessings so as to make our lives fruitful and successful. Please bless our child with a long, healthy, brave and abundant life.
अस्मे I, us प्र go forth, toward, ahead यन्धि grant, cause मघवन् Almighty Lord ऋजीषिन् Expeller इन्द्र God, Indra रायः wealth, possession विश्ववारस्य whole, complete भूरेः abundant अस्मे me, mine, I शतम् hundred शरदः year जीवसे survive, exist, live धाः put, give, get वीरान् brave hero शश्वतः all, each इन्द्र Best of all शिप्रिन् full of health, also – Giver of health
The following verse is recited at the left side of the child.
इन्द्र श्रेष्ठांनि द्रविणानि धेहि चित्तिं दक्षस्य सुभगत्वमस्मे ।
पोषं रयीणामरिष्टिं तनूनां स्वाद्मानं वाचः सुदिनत्वमह्नाम् ॥
Indra shreṣhthaani draviṇaani dhehi
chittim dakshasya subhagat-vanasme.
Poṣham rayeeṇaam-ariṣhṭim tanoonaam
svaad-maanam vaachah sudinatvam-ahnaam.5
O ever-present Supreme God, please bless us with the ability to gain wealth through righteous means. Do bless us all with prosperity and the ability to sustain our prosperity. Grant us your blessing of good fortune and the ability to prolong and sustain our fortune. Please bless us with good health and truthful and proper speech. May all of our days be blessed by you O Lord.
इन्द्र God, ever-present One ष्रेष्ठानि best, superior द्रविणानि wealth, power, strength धेहि give, grant us चित्तिम् intelligence, wisdom, purpose, nature (of things/mind) दक्षस्य dexterity, ability, capability सुभगत्वम् welfare, prosperity, favor, cause, opulence अस्मे me, mine पोषम् nurture, wealth, thriving,a bundance, supporting रयीणाम् wealth अरिष्टिम् security, fortune, protection तनूनाम् body, embodiment, life स्वाद्मानम् preference, sweetness, properly वाचः speech, words सुदिनत्वम् best of seasons, auspicious times अह्नाम् speedily, soon, days
