Shaanti karanam

The complete Shantikaranam1 is presented here, comprising 28 mantras from the 4 Vedas. These verses embrace peace and tranquility in life and in worship as the devotee seeks good company, prosperity, health and evolution of the consciousness. Included in the Shanti Karanam are the Shiva Sankalpam Mantras2 which establishes control over one’s own mind as well as the abhayam mantras the prayers to ease fatigue, anxiety, depression and fear3

शं इन्द्राग्नी भवतामवोभिः शं इन्द्रावरुणा रातहव्या
शमिन्द्रासोमा सुविताय शंयोशं इन्द्रापूषणा वाजसातौ

Shan na indra-agni bhavataam-avobhih
shan na indraa-varuṇaa raat-havyaa.
Sham-indraa-somaa suvitaaye shanyoh
shan na indraa-pooṣhaṇaa vaaja-saatau.4

May the sham indraagni5 excellent and pure energy and electricity bhavataam be always avobhih protected and assured. May the necessary indraa varunaa pure waters be always raatahavya in full supply. May the sham relief-giving indra somaa purified medicines suvitaaya shanyoh provide for our peace and well-being, and may the sham vital indraa pooshanaa pure and excellent air assure our vaajasaatau crops and wealth.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us इन्द्राग्नी powerful energy, powerful electricity, powerful God भवताम् be, become, originate, transform अवःभिः favor, protection इन्द्रावरुणा powerful water-cycle, powerful forces of nature रातहव्या receiver of offerings, receiver of oblations, offering, in full supply इन्द्रामा powerful medicines सुविताय prosperity, well-being इन्द्रापूषणा excellent and pure air वाजसातौ crops and wealth

शं नो भगः शमु नः शंसो अस्तु शं नः पुरन्धिः शमु सन्तु रायः
शं नः सत्यस्य सुयमस्य शंशं नो अर्यमा पुरुजातो अस्तु

Shan no bhagah shamu nah shanso astu
shan nah purandhih shamu santu raayah.
Shan nah satyasya suyam-asya shansah
shan no aryamaa purujaato astu.6

May shan no we be blessed with bhagah prosperity (through a healthy environment), purandhih elevated intellect, satyasya truth and ethics, raayah riches and wealth all be based on suyamasya good intentions and good habits. may our aryamaa laws, enforcers and judges be impartial and of good reputation for their wisdom. May all these blessings elevate our life and our spirituality.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us भगः good fortune, well-being, excellence, healthy environment ऊँ you, now, indeed शंः praise, recitation अस्तु may be so, so be it पुरम्धिः sky, inspired intellect, blessed (guided) thinking सन्तु may all be; with purpose, be of purpose रायः wealth, possession सत्यस्य truth, ethics सुयमस्य based on noble intentions अर्यमा judicial, based on law, one who is entrusted with discernment, judge पुरुजातः renown, fame

शं नो धाता शमु धर्ता नो अस्तु शं उरूची भवतु स्वधाभिः
शं रोदसी बृहती शं नो अद्रिः शं नो देवानां सुहवानि सन्तु

Shan no dhaataa shamu dhartaa no astu
shan no uroochee bhavatu svadhaa-bhih.
Shan rodasee brihatee shan no adrih
shan no devaanaam suhavaani santu.7

God is the dhaataa Supporter and Nourisher, He dhartaa sustains everything sham nah for our benefit, thus the uruchee earth astu gets filled with svadaabhih nourishment and necessities (to support life) as is the rodasee atmosphere and the brihatee adrih vast clouds. And, the devaanaam learned ones constantly engage in suhavaani santu beautiful and positive thoughts.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us धाता one who beholds everything शम् ऊँ you, now, indeed धर्ता one who sustains अस्तु may be so, so be it उरूची earth भवतु be, become very well स्वधाभिः with all necessities for life (with food/nourishment); also free-will रोदसी the encompassing earth plus atmosphere plus space around and within, light and space बृहती great, vast, immeasurable span अद्रिः cloud देवानां of the learned ones सुहवानि beautiful sounds, prayerful hymns, invocation सन्तु be, may all be; with purpose

शं नः सुकृतां सुकृतानि सन्तु शं इषिरो अभिवातु वातः

Shan no agnir-jyotir-aneeko astu
shan no mitraa-varuṇaa-vashvinaa sham.
Shan nah sukṛitaam sukṛitaani santu
shan na iṣhiro abhi-vaatu vaatah.9

The astu existence of agni purposeful energy and jyotiranika spectrum of light is for our purpose. The mitraavaruna10 alliance between the waters and the ashvinaa sun, moon and other celestial bodies are for our benefit. The sukritaam benevolence of sukritaani good conduct santu is sham nah for our benefit. The vaatah weather undergoes ishirah constant change and abhivaatu effect sham nah for our benefit.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us अग्निः Supreme, energy, fire, heat, combustion, power ज्योतिः light अनीकः luminous, army अस्तु may be so, so be it मित्रावरुणौ in-breath and out-breath; friendly/beneficial air; beneficial waters अश्विा sun, moon, celestial bodies (eg how the moon regulates tide) सुकृताम् quite beautiful, very transformative सुकृतानि virtuous, with merit, auspiciousness सन्तु be, may all be; with purpose इषिरः quickly, constantly changing अभि वातु वातः flow towards, flowing

शं नो द्यावापृथिवी पूर्वहूतौ शमन्तरिक्षं दृशये नो अस्तु
शं ओषधीर्वनिनो भवन्तु शं नो रजसस्पतिरस्तु जिष्णुः

Shan no dyaavaa pṛithivee poorva hootau
sham-antariksham dṛishaye no astu.
Shan na oṣhadheer vanino bhavantu
shan no rajasas-patir-astu jiṣhṇuh.11

O rajasaspatih, Master of the infinitesimal particles of the world astu jushnuh you are acclaimed all over as our benefactor. Bless us so that poorva hootau most importantly, may dyaavaa prithivee earth and the entire solar system, the antariksham atmosphere and space all, drishaye with clarity, sham nah astu bring us peace and prosperity. May the oshadheeh vaninah bounteous medicinal plants be beneficial to us.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us द्यावापृथिवी heaven and earth, the space and earth, solar system पूर्वहूतौ invocation, in praise of the controller of past and present अन्तरिक्षम् atmosphere, sky, space, rainwater दृशये see, view, observe clearly अस्तु may be so, so be it ओषधीः medicinal plants वनिनः forest of trees भवन्तु may be रजसः dust, powder, kind of plant, emotion पतिः master जिष्णुः victorious, vanquishing

शं इन्द्रो वसुभिर्देवो अस्तु शमादित्येभिर्वरुणः सुशंसः
शं नो रुद्रो रुद्रेभिर्जलाषः शं नास्त्वष्टा ग्नाभिरिह शृणोतु

Shan na indro vasubhir-devo astu
sham-aaditye-bhir varuṇah sushansah.
Shan no rudro rudre-bhir-jalaaṣhah
shan nas-tvaṣhṭaa gnaa-bhir-iha shriṇotu.12

May indra the sun, with its vasubhih life-giving attributes, bring us comfort. May the sushamsah excellent process in the aadityebhih influence of the sun of the seasons and varunah waters/oceans be beneficial to us. May rudra the life-giving God, rudrebhih in his assessment and judgement, bring us benevolence. May the tvashtaa Creator gnaabhih iha shrinotu listen to us (our worship) for our bliss.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us इन्द्रः sun and atmosphere, God, वसुभिः live-giving attributes, देवः virtuous, splendorous, heavenly अस्तु be, may be so, so be it आदित्ेभिः having studied, seasons influenced by the sun वरुणः water, oceans सुशंसः praiseworthy, blessing, beautiful, good रुद्रः God of consequences, judge of the sinners रुद्रेभिः assessment or judgement of rudra जलाषः healer, healing, cooling, curative त्वष्टा creative power ग्नाभिः voices, calls, (prayers) इह here, now शृणोतु hear, listen

शं नः सवरूणां मितयो भवन्तु शं प्रसवः शम्वस्तु वेदिः

Shan nah somo bhavatu brahma shan nah
shan no graavaaṇah shamu santu yajyaah.
Shan nah svarooṇaam mitayo bhavantu
shan nah prasavah sham-vastu vedih.13

May the tides, as regulated by the moon and the rains clouds, be beneficial for the creation of our wealth and luxury, may our havan and worship, as well as the homes/temples that sustain our worship, be blessed be respected and may the medicinal offerings at our havan and agnihotra bring us health and prosperity.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us ोमः moon, भवतु be, become, very well ब्रह्म wealth, food, luxury (creation of luxury) ग्रावाणः cloud ऊँ indeed, you, now सन्तु be, become, exist यज्ञाः havan, agnihotra, workshop, devotion ्वरूणाम् the place of worship, the pillars holding up yagyashaala, words of worship at the agnihotra. central pillar मितयः known, respect प्रस्वः medicinal herbs वेदिः kunda, agnihotra offering

शं नः ूर् उरुचक्षा उदेतु शं नश्चतस्रः प्रदिशो भवन्तु
शं नः पर्वता ध्रुवयो भवन्तु शं नः ि्धवः शमु सन्त्वापः ॥

Shan nah soorya uruchakshaa udetu
shan nash-chatasrah pradisho bhavantu.
Shan nah parvataa dhruvayo bhavantu
shan nah sindhavah shamu sant-vaapah14

May the sun and sunlight continue to cause us to see perfectly, may our movement in any direction be blessed, may the mountains, fixed and movable places bring us bliss, and may the oceans and waters be pure and beneficial.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us सूर्यः sun उरुऽचक्षाः vision, cause to see, excellence उत् up, (rise up) एतु go travel चतस्रः four प्रऽदिशः directions, indicate भवन्तु be, become, very well पर्वताः mountain ध्रुवयः fixed placed, affixed ि्धवः river, ocean indeed, you, now सन्तु be, exist, become, happen आपः water, air, breath

शं नो अदितिर्भवतु व्रतेभिः शं नो भवन्तु मरुतः स्वर्काः
शं नो विष्णुः शमु पूषा नो अस्तु शं नो भवित्रं शम्वस्तु वाुः ॥

Shan no aditir-bhavatu vratebhih
Shan no bhavantu marutah svarkaah.
Shan no viṣhṇuh shamu pooṣhaa no astu
shan no bhavitram sham-vastu vaayuh.15

May mother earth continue to be beneficial to us. May the wind and waters strengthen us. May our communities be blessed with such persons who are honest in their actions, who perform good deeds and whose thoughts are pure like mantras of the Vedas. May the All-Pervading God bless us with health and happiness now and in the future.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us अदितिः wise mother भवतु be, become, very well व्रतेभिः vow, good action, honest acts मरुतः good people who do good deeds स्वर्काः one whose thoughts are beautiful mantras विष्णुः all-pervading God ऊँ indeed, you, now पूषा nourishment, confirmation, celibacy, discipline अस्तु be, may be so, so be it भवित्रम् promising work, earth or other worlds, another place वाुः wind, power

शं नो देवः सविता त्रायमाणः शं नो भवन्तूषसो विभातीः।
शं नः पर्जन्यो भवतु प्रजाभ्शं नः क्षेत्रस् पतिरस्तु शंभुः ॥

Shan no devah savitaa traayamaaṇah
shan no bhavantooṣhaso vibhaateeh.
Shan nah parjanyo bhavatu prajaabhyah
shan nah kshetrasya patirastu shambhuh.16

May savitaa devaah the sun be traayamaanah protective and health-giving to us. May the healthy effects of the rays of the sun always protect us from illness. May the rising sun, the ushaso hours of early morn be filled with vibhaateeh charming grandeur and progressive health. May the parjanyah layers of atmosphere, air and clouds be prajaabhyah beneficial to everyone. May the rainclouds produce the natural mix of elements in sufficient quantities. May kshetrasya the productive lands and patih those engaged in producing from the lands shambhuh bring us health and prosperity.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us  देवः Giver of Happiness सविता creator of the world त्रायमाणः protector, preserver भवन्तु be, become, very well, they shall उषसः dawn, morning time विभातीः bright, extra-shining, luminous पर्जन्ः rainclouds, cloud, rain प्रजाभ्ः for people, for everyone क्षेत्रस् पतिः lord/father/Master of this world (क्षेत्र = field, habitat, country, domain etc अस्य=of this पतिः= father, lord, master) अस्तु be, may be so, so be it शम्भुः kind, benevolent

शं नो देवा विश्वदेवा भवन्तु शं सरस्वती सह धीभिरस्तु।
शमभिषाशमु रातिषाशं नो दिव्ाः पार्थिवाः शं नो अप्ाः ॥

Shan no devaa vishvedevaa bhavantu
shan sarasvatee saha dheebhirastu.
Shambhiṣhaacha shamu raatiṣhachah
shan no divyaah paarthivaah shan n aapyaah.17

May vishvedevaa the learned ones devaah develop divine qualities and actions and nah sham bhavantu be favorable to us. May we be blessed with saraswati cultured and eloquent speech and dheebhih wisdom and good intellect. May abhishaachah those who are dedicated and self-realized and those who raatishaachah are the recipients and givers of wealth and knowledge (spiritual and physical wealth) be favourable to us. May the divyaa heavens and upper regions, the paarthivaah the earth and planets and apyaah the waters be all favourable to us.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us देवाः bestower of auspiciousness विश्वदेवाः all scientists and scholars भवन्तु be, become, very well, they shall सरस्वती eloquence सह with, together with धीभिः intelligence, insight अस्तु be, maybe so, so be it अभिः favourable to (truth, inner self) ऊँ indeed, you, now रातिः generous (with knowledge, giving or imparting wisdom) दिव्ाः amenable, good-natured, divine, beautiful पार्थिवाः earthly precious items अप्ाः things borne (transported or extant in) water.

शं नः सत्यस्य पतयो भवन्तु शं नो अर्वन्तः शमु सन्तु गावः
शं ऋभवः ुकृतः ुहस्ताः शं नो भवन्तु पितरो हवेषु ॥

Shan nah satyasya patayo bhavantu
shan no arvantah shamu santu gaavah.
Shan na ribhavah sukritah suhastaah
shan no bhavantu pitaro haveṣhu.18

May we remain satyasya ethical and truthful in our life. May we be good to our patayah spouse, and may we be good parents. May we be blessed with arvantah power and gaavah wealth and always exemplify satyasya ethics, ribhavah intelligence, sukritah morality, and a good lifestyle with sahastaah relevant skills and knowledge. May our haveshu worship (havan) be favorable.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us सत्यस्य ethics – truthful speech, exemplary behaviour etc. पतयः man, spouse भवन्तु be, become, very well, they shall अर्वन्तः best horses (superior power, superior wealth) सन्तु be exist become गावः milk-giving-cows (luxury, riches) ऋभवः prudent, clever, intelligent ुकृतःvirtuous, morality, saintly ुहस्ताः skilful experienced, one who do good deeds पितरः fatherly, paternal हवेषु havan, yagya, good deeds, worship

शं नो अज एकपाद्देवअस्तु शं ोऽहिर्बुध्शं समुद्रः ।
शं नो अपां नपात्पेरुरस्तु शं नः पृश्िर्भवतु देवगोपा ॥

Shan no aja ekapaad-devo astu
shan no ahir-budhanyah shan samudrah.
Shan no apaam napaat-perur-astu
shan nah prishnir-bhavatu deva-gopaa.19

May the ajah eternal ekpaad pervasive constant force devaah with divine qualities bring us bliss and prosperity. May the ahirbudhanya peaceful atmosphere and clouds provide us with peace and prosperity as may the samudrah oceans be life-giving to
us. May apaam the waters of the atmosphere in the napaat form of vapor and humidity be auspicious to us. May all these natural forces devogopaah protected and preserved by peruh the Eradicator of our sorrows, the prishinah omnipresent and all-pervading, be nah sham bhavantu auspicious to us.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us अजः unborn एकपात् the One at whose feet, constantly present देवः scholars, scientists, with good/divine qualities अस्तु be, may be so, so be it अहिः cloud बुध्ः coming from or belonging to the depths of space समुद्रः ocean अपाम् in water, of body of water नपात् path, boat (also offspring) पेरुः delivering, remover पृश्िः space, ray of light देवगोपा divine protector

इन्द्रो विश्वस्य राजति । शन्नो अस्तु द्विपदे शञ्चतुष्पदे ॥

Indro vishvasya raajati.
Shan no astu divpade
shan chatuṣhpade20

O Indrah Master, the vishvasya entire world raajati thrives by your Grace. Please sham nah astu be blissful to us and to everything around us. May all dvipade, chatushpade creatures be blessed by You.

yajur 36.8 इन्द्रः electricity, energy, sun, God, Master विश्वस्य of the world राजति shining by your Grace शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us  अस्तु be, maybe so, so be it द्विऽपदे for two-footed, bipeds also child, son चतुष्पदे for quadrupeds, animals etc 

शन्नो वातः पवताँ शन्नस्तपतु सूर्यः
शन्नः कनिक्रदद्देवः पर्जन्यो अभि वर्षतु ॥

Shan no vaatah pavataam
shan-nas-tapatu sooryah.
Shan nah kani-kradad devaah
parjanyo abhi varṣhatu21

May vaatah the wind continuously pavtaam flow around us and sham provide health, vigor and strength. May the excellence of the sooryah sun and its tapatu warmth, light and heat as well as parjanyah abhivarshatu the rains be kanikradat devaah superior in purity and quality and sham nah be beneficial to us.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us वातः wind पवताम् walk, go, wend तपतु(तपे) glowing, hot ूर्ःsun कनिक्रदत् call out to, roar, neigh, loud, at top of, superior देवः of excellent quality पर्जन्ः clouds, cloudy अभिवर्षतु raining for us, water (for plants, etc)

अहाि शम्भवन्तु नः शँ रात्रीः प्रति धीयताम् ।
शन् इन्द्राग्नी भवतामवोभिः शन् इन्द्रावरुणा रातहव्या
शन् इन्द्रापूषणा वाजसातौ शमिन्द्रासोमा सुविताय शँयोः ॥

Ahaani sham bhavantu nah
sham raatreeh prati dheeyataam.
Shan na indraagni bhavataam-avobhih
shan na indraa-varuṇaa raata havyaa.
Shan na indraa-pooṣhaṇaa vaaj-saatau
sham-indraa-soma suvitaaya shanyoh22

May our ahaani days be sham bhavantu nah peaceful and productive; may our raatri nights be sham prati dheeyataam be similarly peaceful and blissful. May indraagni the power of positive energy avobhih protect us and bhavataam be auspicious to us. May indravaruna the vital air and the various layers of air raatahavyav provide us with the necessary enjoyment of life. May the indrapooshana the energy of the atmosphere and productive earth vaaj saatau enable us to overcome challenges and to enjoy good health through indrasoma the medicinal and healthy plants and foods so that we maintain suvitaay a prosperous and blessed pathway in life.

अहाि day, dawn शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential भवन्तु be, become, very well, they shall नः us, I, mine रात्रीः night प्रति about, to धीयताम् patience, intellect, holding (प्रतिधी as intelligent as, to expect) इन्द्राग्नी electricity, fire भवताम् to be, you, your अवोभिः aid, favor, protection इन्द्रावरुणा power and water रातऽहव्ा one who derives benefit or pleasure from an act इन्द्रापूषणा powerful earth, productive earth वाजऽसातौ victory, overcome struggle for इन्द्रामा powerful medicinal plants सुविताय inspiration, welfare, prosperous course, good path 

शन्नो देवीरभिष्टय आपो भवन्तु पीतये । शँोरभि ्रवन्तु नः

Shan no deveer abhiṣhṭaya
aapo bhavantu peetaye.
Shanyor abhi sravantu nah23

Shan gracious, abhishtaya pleasant, aapah omnipresent deveee divine Mother (radiant One), bhavantu may shanyor blessings of peetaya contentment abhishravantu shower, flow to nah us.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us देवीः highest divine, radiant अभिष्टये  pleasant, wish, praise, for the achievement of desired happiness, prevalence, protection आपः water, the fulfilling of thirst भवन्तु be, become, very well पीतये contentment, satisfaction of thirst, drinking of water शम्  योः rain of happiness, blessings अभि ्रवन्तु may shower

द्ौः शा्तिरन्तरिक्षँ शान्तिः पृथिवी शा्तिरापः शा्तिरोषधयः शान्तिः
वनस्पतयः शा्तिर्विश्वे देवाः शा्तिर्ब्रह्म शान्तिः सर्वशान्तिः शा्तिरेव शान्तिः मा शा्तिरेधि ॥

Dyauh shaantir-antariksham shaantih
pṛithivee shaantir-aapah
shaantir-oṣhadhayah shaantih.
Vanas-patayah shaantir-vishve devaah
shaantir-brahma shaantih sarvam shaantih
shaantir-eva shaantih
saa maa shaantir-edhi. 24

May there be peace shaanti in dyauh the heavenly regions; may there be peace in antariksham the atmosphere; may peace reign on prithivi earth; may the aapah waters be soothing and may the oshadhaya medicinal plants be healing. May the vanaspatayah plants be a source of peace to all; may the vishvedevaah enlightened persons bring us peace; may the brahma Vedas and forms of knowledge spread peace throughout; may the sarvam all other objects give us peace (may the entire universe bring us peace) and may shantih eva shantih saa maa shantih edhi peace itself bring peace unto me.

द्ौः sky, heaven, luminous bodies in space शान्तिः peace अन्तरिक्षम् atmosphere पृथिवी earth आपः waters (oceans and rivers) and air ओषधयः medicinal herbs and plants वनस्पतयः trees, forests, plants, vegetation विश्वे देवाः enlightened persons ब्रह्म God and Veda सर्वम् everything एव really, thus ा you मा me एधि receive, be received

तच्चक्षुर्देवहितम्पुरस्ताच्छुक्रमुच्चरत्
पश्येम शरदः शतञ्जीवेम शरदः शतँ शृणुाम शरदः शतम्प्र ब्रवाम शरदः शतमदीाः स्याम शरदः शतम्भूयश् शरदः शतात्

Tach-chakshur deva-hitam
puras-taach chhukram-uch-charat.
Pashyema sharadah shatam
jeevema sharadah shatam
shriṇu yaama sharadah shatam
pra bravaam sharadah shatam
adeenaah syaama sharadah shatam
bhooyascha sharadah shataat.25

O Master, you are tat The Supreme Being, the chakshuh eternal Guide. You are devahitam the foremost benefactor of the wise; purastaach the primary, the original force of all; uchcharat the principal force present in the world and shukram the magnetic power, the provider of happiness. Bless us O Lord with a shatam sharadah full lifetime that is filled with pashyema vision and wisdom; jeevema life and joy; shrinuyaam hearing, perception and intellect; prabravaam teaching, preaching and praising; adeenaah self-reliance and self-sufficiency. And O Lord, may these blessings through your grace be bhooyah even more than and beyond sharadah shatam a hundred years and may we always be shataat healthy and energetic.

तत् that (the conscious God in you) चक्षुः all-seeing eyes, eyes देवहितमिति good and welfare of enlightened ones पुरस्तात् from time immorial शुक्रम् pure, spotless, resplendent उत् चरत् pervading/omniscient पश्येम see शरदः years शतम् one hundred जीवेम live, life (breathe) शृणुाम listen, hear प्र। ब्रवाम say, speak,talk अदीनाः independent स्याम may we be भूः as well, becoming and 

यज्जाग्रतो दूरमुदैति दैवं
तदु ुप्तस्य तथैवैति।
दूरङ्गमं ज्ोतिषां ज्ोतिरेकं
तन्मे मनः शिवसंकल्पमस्तु ॥26

Yaj-jaagrato dooram-udaiti daivam
tadu suptasya tathai-vaiti.
Door-aṅgamam27 jyotiṣhaam jyotir-ekam28
tan-me manah shiva-sankalpam-astu.

Notwithstanding all of its daivam divine qualities, the manah mind dooram udaiti travels far and wide while we jaagratah are awake. Tadu It behaves in tathai similar manner suptasya while asleep by doorangamam moving about and going afar. May tat that me manah my mind, jyotishaam jyotirekam be inspired and illuminated with shivasankalpam astu noble intent.

यज्जाग्रतो यत् that which जाग्रतः while awake दूरमुदैति दू रम् far उत् आ एति moves/roams/runs (उदयति also mean ‘in a state of flux’) दैवम् with divine qualities तत् that उ and ुप्तस्य during sleep तथैवैति behaves in similar manner तथा एव similar एती behaves दूरङ्गमम् wanders far away ज्ोतिषाम् of lights; ज्ोतिष also refers to the cosmos from which we derive astrology and astronomy ज्योति illuminator एकम् alone तत् that मे my मन mind मनो with mind शिवसंकल्पम् of noble inclination अस्तु may be

येन कर्माण्यपसो मनीषिणो यज्ञे कृण्वन्ति विदथेषु धीराः।
यदपूर्वँयक्षमन्तः प्रजा्तन्मे मनः शिवसङ्कल्पमस्तु॥

Yena kar-maaṇ-ya-paso maneeṣhiṇo
yajye kriṇvanti vida theshu dheeraah.
Yadapoorvam yaksham antah prajaa-naam
tan me manah shiva-sankalpam astu.29

My mind is karmaani producer of good behavior, apasah honest actions and manisheenah is filled with wisdom; It is under my control. My mind is yajye filled with worship and is charitably inclined, leading to good krinvanti actions, and it is vidatheshu full of knowledge that is to be shared. It is apoorvam unique, yaksham diverse, antah within and prajaanaam created for our benefit. O Lord, may tat me manah that my mind be jyotih illumined and filled with shiv sankalpam of noble resolves.

येन that which, also, that whom, who कर्माणि good deeds/good behavior अपसः honest action मनीषिणः filled with wisdom; also, a disciplined mind यज्ञे in worship कृण्वन्ति performance विदथेषु full of knowledge for sharing/dissemination धीराः thoughtful/wise persons यत् that अपूर्वम् unique, incomparable, extraordinary यक्षम् diverse अन्तः inside प्रजााम् created for all, everyone तत् that मे my मन mind शिवसंकल्पम् of noble inclination अस्तु may be

यत्प्रज्ञानमुत ेतो धृतिश् यज्ज्ोतिरन्तरमृतम्प्रजाु।
यस्मा्नऽऋते किञ्चन कर्म क्रियते तन्मे मनः शिवसङ्कल्पमस्तु॥

Yat prajyaa-nam uta cheto dṛitish cha
yaj jyotir antar amṛitam prajaasu.
Yasmaan na ṛite kin chana karma kriyate
tan me manah shivah-sankalpam astu.30

My mind is the prajyaanaam resource of knowledge uta and the cheetah source of memory and consciousness. It is the abode of dritih patience and courage. My mind is jyotih illumined and antah within. It is amritam free from destruction and leads to a path of peace and happiness for prajaasu all. My mind is that yasmaan rite without which kinchan nothing, no karma action kriyate is achieved. O Lord, may tat me manah that my mind be jyotih illumined and filled with shiv sankalpam of noble resolves.

यत् that प्रजााम् resource of knowledge/intellect उत and ेतः source of memory and consciousness धृति patience and courage and ज्योतिः light अन्तः inner अमृतम् free from destruction, (indestructible, eternal) प्रजा of persons यस्मात् ऋते without which किञ्चन nothing (this is also a rhetorical question ‘what can?’ or e.g., ‘can anything be done without’) कर्मा karma – act/deed/work क्रियते can be done तत् that मे my मन mind शिवसंकल्पम् of noble inclination अस्तु may be

येनेदम्भूतम्भुवनम्भविष्यत्परिगृहीतममृते सर्वम्
येन यज्ञस्तायते सप्तहोता तन्मे मनः शिवसङ्कल्पमस्तु॥

Yenedam bhootam bhuvanam bhaviṣhyat
pari-gṛiheetam amṛitena sarvam.
Yena yajyas taayate sapta hotaa
tan me manaḥ shiva-sankalpam astu.31

My mind is Sarvam contained of the bhootam past, bhuvanam present and bhavishyat future. It has parigriheetam complete control of thought process from all sides. It is amritena indestructible and immortal. yena Through my mind yajyasya sacrifice is taayate accomplished. Through my mind the saptahotaa32 seven organs are interacted with (2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 nostrils, mouth). O Lord, may tat me manah that my mind be jyotih illumined and filled with shiv sankalpam of noble resolves.

येन by which इदम् this भूतम् past भुवनम् present भविष्यत् future परिग्रहीतम् is comprehended अमृते indestructible सर्वम् all येन that which, also, that whom, who यज्ञ worship, selfless sacrifice, rituals तायते is accomplished सप्तहोता seven organs interact (सप्तहोता also refers to the hota or master of the sapta, seven senses (taste, breath, sight, hearing, feeling, intellect (buddhi) and soul (atma)= seven) तत् that मे my मन mind शिवसंकल्पम् of noble inclination अस्तु may be

यस्मिाम यजूँषि यस्मि्प्रतिष्ठिता रथनाभविवाराः।
यस्मिँश्ित्तँ सर्वमोतम्प्रजा्तन्मे मनः शिवसङ्कल्पमस्तु॥

Yasminn-ṛichah saama yajoonshi
yasmin pratiṣh ṭhitaa ratha-naa-bhaa-vi-vaaraah.
Yasminsh- chittam sarvam-otam prajaanam
tan me manah shiva-sankalpam astu.33

Yasmin in my mind is contained the powers of rik, saam, yajur the Vedas, the Universal Wisdom. Within my mind pratishthitaa this wisdom is found carefully designed as the rathanaabhau-aaraaiva spokes of a wheel. In my mind is contained yasminshchittam knowledge sarvam complete and full like ottam the thread in a necklace for prajaanaam everyone. O Lord, may tat me manah that my mind be jyotih illumined and filled with shiv sankalpam of noble resolves.

यस्मि् in which ऋचः Rigveda ाम saamveda यजूषि yajur veda प्रतिष्ठिता are present established/firm रथनाभो इव अराः like spokes in a wheel ित्तम् knowledge सर्वम् all ओतम like thread in a necklace प्रजााम् created for all, everyone तत् that मे my मन mind शिवसंकल्पम् of noble inclination अस्तु may be

ुषारथिरश्वािव यन्मनुष्ीयतेऽभीशुभिर्वाजिनऽइव।
हृत्प्रतिष्ठँयदजिरञ्जविष्ठन्तन्मे मनः शिवसङ्कल्पमस्तु ॥

Suṣhaa rathir ashvaan iva yan manuṣhyaan
ne nee yate bheeshubhir vaa-jina-iva.
Hṛit pratiṣhṭham yad-ajiram javiṣhṭham
tan me manah shiva-sankalpam astu.34

Eva just like sushaarathih a good charioteer or chauffeur who has to firmly control his restless ashvaan horses or vehicle, so manushyaan we humans must neneeyate maintain control of our minds with the abheeshubhih (reins, wheel that can go this way or that way if not controlled) power of internal control. The mind is vaajinah) very powerful, it is hrit pratishtham in the center of our being and is yat that ajiram which is in motion, restless, immune from decay and javishtham fast moving. O Lord, may tat me manah that my mind be jyotih illumined and filled with shiv sankalpam of noble resolves.

ुषारथिः a skilled charioteer/driver आश्वा् the horses – also, in this case, the vehicle इव in a certain manner, as, as if, like यत् which मनुष्् people/humans ीयते maintain control; drags forcibly अभीशुभि:reins, controlling power/steering mechanism वाजिनः fast running/powerful हृत्प्रतिष्ठम् in the region of the heart; at centre of being यत् which अजिरम् immune from decay; also in motion; also restless जविष्ठम् fast-moving; of immense speed; immeasurable speed तत् that मे my मन mind शिवसंकल्पम् of noble inclination अस्तु may be

नः पवस्व शं गवे शं जना शमर्वते ।
शं राजन्ोषधीभ्ः ॥

Sa nah pavasva sham gave
sham janaaya shamar-vate.
Sham raajann ‘oṣhadhee-bhyah.35

O Lord, may sah you grant nah unto us pavasva blessings of gavay prospterity36, all the necessary ingredients of life for our happiness. O Master, may we also janaaya arvate benefit from healthy foods, good medicines and dependable, safe and good means of transportation to achieve our goals in life.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us पवस्व purify, filter also welfare गवे speech, senses जना humans (beneficial to people) अर्वते power, benefit, horse राजन् radiant divine, king, master ओषधीभ्ः medicinal

अभयं नः करत्यन्तरिक्षमभयं द्यावापृथिवी उभे इमे।
अभयं पश्ादभयं पुरस्तादुत्तरादधरादभयं नो अस्तु

Abhayam nah karaty-antariksham
abhayam dyaavaa pṛithivee ubhe ime.
Abhayam pashchaad abhayam purastaad
uttaraad adharaad abhayam no astu.37

Let us be abhayam fearless and free of anxiety and depression. Let us not have an undue and unnecessary fear of the antariksham atmosphere or dyaavaaprithivee wider space, celestial bodies or earth; no fear or anxiety of anything pashchaat purastaat uttaraat adharaat behind or ahead of us, no fear of what is past or what is yet to come and no fear of anything in any direction – be it front, back, left, right, above or below.

अभयम् fearlessness नः us करति do अन्तरिक्षम् atmosphere, above, air, space द्यावापृथिवी heaven and earth उभे both इमे this पश्ात् west, behind, at the back पुरस्तात् east, to the front उत्तरात् north, to the left अधरात् south, below अस्तु be it so

अभयं मित्रादभयममित्रादभयं ज्ञातादभयं पुरो ः।
अभयं नक्तमभयं दिवा नः सर्वा आशा मम मित्रं भवन्तु

Abhayam mitraad abhayam amitraad
abhayam jyaataad abhayam parokshaat.
Abhayam naktam abhayam divaa nah
sarvaa aashaa mama mitram bhavantu.38

Let us build aashaa hope and Abhayam fearlessness instead of worry, anxiety and depression. May we have no anxiety or fear, whether from mitraat amitraat friends or foe, from the jyaataat known or unknown, be it naktam diva night or day, whether in darkness or in light, whether being awake or asleep. May no fear or anxiety be with us. May all directions and all persons be friendly towards me
