पञ्चहुतयः Paṅch-aahuti

Paṅch-aahuti1: Five oblations of Ghee: Chant this mantra 5 times, and make oblations of Ghee each time with the word Svaahaa

ओम् अयंत् इध्म आत्मा जातवेदस्तेनेध्यस्व वर्धस्व चेद्ध वर्धय
चास्मान् प्रजया पशुभिर्ब्रह्मवर्चसेनान्नाद्येन समेधय स्वाहा॥ 
इदमग्नये जातवेदसे इदन्न मम

Om ayant idhma aatmaa
jaata-vedas-tene-dhyasva
vardha-sva ched-dha vardhaya chaas-maan
prajayaa-pashubhir-brahma-varchase-na-annaa-dyena
samedhaya svaahaa.2
Idam-agnaye jaata-vedase, idanna mama.

जलसिञ्चनम् – Jala-sinchanam

Sprinkling water in different directions3

In the Eastern direction4:
ओम् अदितेऽनुमन्यसव

Om adite-anumanya-sva.5

In the Western direction6:
ओम् अनुमतेऽनुमन्यस्व

Om anumate-anumanya-sva.7

In the Northern direction8:
ओं सरस्वत्यनुमन्यस्व

Om sarasvaty-anumanya-sva.9

Around, in all directions10:
ओं देव सवितः प्रसुव यज्ञं प्रसुव यज्ञपतिं भगाय
दिव्यो गन्धर्वः केतपूः केतं नः पुनातु वाचस्पतिर्वाचं नः स्वदतु

Om deva savitah prasuva yajyam
prasuva yajya-patim bhagaaya.
Divyo gandharvah keta-pooh
ketan nah punaatu
vaachas-patir-vaachan nah svadatu.11

  1. Each of the 5 chants of this mantra focuses on an aspect of its request: prajayaa – good children, pashubhih – harmony with other species, brahmavarchase – physical and spiritual wisdom, annadyena – grains and food (that is, health and strength), and samedhaya – prosperity and luxury.

  3. Water is sprinkled in different directions outside of the Kunda. The significance of water in Agnihotra is manifold: 1) Washing/cleaning – may the mind be washed clean of any negative; 2) Water represents cooling (opposing) force to fire – where there is fire, there should be water; 3) Where the fires of passions arise there should be the cooling temperament of good senses; (4) Water flows from the ultimate source of Godhead (a reference to Ganga flowing from the head of Shiva); (5) Water also represent the force of God – e.g., the great flood of Manu. (6) Water is an alien force to earth that provided the catalyst to life.
