Gore gore hathò mė mehendee

Gore gore hathò mė mehendee rachaa ke
Naino mė kajraa daal ke
Chalo dulhaniyaa piyaa se milne
Choṭaa saa ghunghaṭ nikal ke

Jaake ab sasural me rahnaa
Saas sasur kee sevaa karnaa

Gussa kare vo juban nahee kholnaa
Hardam unke man mandir me rakhnaa
Naino ka deepak ujaal ke
Chalo dulhaniyaa piyaa se milne

O Bride! Now with the mehendi-decorated palms and beautifully adorned eyes, come, get ready to meet your beloved husband. Lift your veil for him to see you.

As you go to your new home, remember to serve your inlaws with care. Endure whatever anyone says for the sake of your togetherness with your husband. Overcome any discomfort and tears so that you can be happy together.

Remember that you are the celebration of love. Let the day’s work be eased into rest without complaint.

Speak sweetly. Withhold anger and be the goddess that your husband wants you to be. Be happy O bride.

Asha Bhosle, Parineeta (1953)
