Introduction
A child generally starts to grow first teeth between 4th and 7th months. This indicates both the ability to chew items and the general development of the digestive system. Thus, this sanskaara is done at the exact time when teeth are grown, and the digestive system is ready for the more intensive digestion of solids. The timing of this sanskara is unique. It gives us an insight into the science of the Vedas and the wisdom of the ancient seers.
While the seventh month of growth and development of teeth and digestive systems marks the child’s readiness for solid food, the mother is also ready to reduce the child’s dependency on her milk so that her body can recuperate fully.
At this time in the child’s development, there is more rapid development of bones, cartilage, and other areas of the body; thus, a change in diet is recommended.
The Scriptures recommend a vegetarian diet. The Annaprashna sanskaara is an ancient ritual that marks a child’s first meal, that meal being of grains.
