Chooṛaakarma Sanskaara

Note: With the advent of clippers and do-it-yourself shaving kits, trimming and shaving are more frequently performed by a parent or other family member. Whoever is chosen for this clipping and shaving activity will be appointed and blessed here.

ओम् आयमगन्त्सविता क्षुरेणोष्णेन वाय उदकेनेहिं ।
आदित्या रुद्रा वसव उन्दन्तु सचेतसः सोमस्य राज्ञॊ वपत प्रचेतसः ॥

May this skilled person be blessed to bring his skills to the fore. May his/her accurate and deft skills, along with the relevant equipment (clipper, scissors, shaver, etc.) and ingredients (like warm water, cream/oil, etc), perform this task of shaving skillfully. May this barber be blessed to accomplish this task diligently.

अयम् this अगन् fire/heat सविता skilled one क्षुरेण with razor उष्णेन hot, warm वायो one who has deftness/skill in action/movement उदकेन with water आ  इहि  you come आदित्या: luminous, lustrious रुद्रा: knowledgeable वसव: good person उन्दन्तु moisten, wetting सोमस्य mindful (of task at hand), peaceful राज्ञ: bright child वपत get shaved, cleaned प्रचेतस: knowledgeable person

With the following mantra, the hair is being prepared for clipping. We may moisten or free/loosen the hair in preparation for clipping.

ओम् अदिति श्मश्रु वपत्वाप उन्दन्तु वर्चसा ।
चिकित्सतु प्रजापतिर्दीर्घायुत्वाय चक्षसे ॥

O Lord, bless this child with a long, healthy life and great vision. May the equipment we use be efficient, and may the water be warm and beneficial as we perform this task of clipping and shaving. O Lord, bless us so that we achieve this task efficiently. May the medical benefits accrue to our child.

अदिति: boundless, efficient श्मश्रु hair वप shaving, clipping तु you आप: water उन्दन्तु moistening वर्चसा luster, shining चिकित्सतु medicinal, medical प्रजापति: God दीर्घायुत्वाय long and healthy life  चक्षसे improved vision

ओं सवित्रा प्रसूता दैव्या आप उन्दन्तु ते तनूं दीर्घायुत्वाय वर्चसे ॥

O Lord, bless this child of ours born by the grace of your Divine blessings. O child, may you be blessed with a long life and health. May the waters, an essential ingredient of life, always benefit you. May you glow with the luster of bliss.

ओं सवित्रा sun, God प्रसूता child, progeny, born दैव्या fortune, fate, divine आप waters उन्दन्तु moistening ते they, them तनूं child दीर्घायु long-lived त्वाय you वर्चसे light, luster

With the following mantra, the father combs/strokes the child’s hair lovingly:

ओम् ओषधे त्रायस्वैनम् ॥

O God, you are the one who safeguards us from illness, and you bless us with medicinal elements in nature. Please protect this child.

ओषधे healer, medical protector, त्रायस्व protect, safeguard, एनम् this

With the following mantra, rest the right hand lightly on the right side of the head. If darbha grass is available and clean for use, gently touch three darbha grass to the right side of the head. 

Note: The darbha grass is famous for its properties of purification and protection. It is traditionally used as a shield against negative energies and it ensures a sanctified atmosphere for worship.

ओं विष्णोर्दंष्ट्रोऽसि ॥

May our child be protected by our All-pervading God while we use these sharp objects. 

विष्णोर्दष्ट्रोऽसि suitable and effective (sharp) tool (practical object for purpose); विष्णु God, Preserver दंष्ट्र sharp object असि so, which, is, are 

Lukewarm water is handed to the barber for use in the shaving procedure. As the water is handed over (or mixed to make it warm), the following verse is recited5:

ओम् उष्णेन वाय उदकेनैधि॥

May this warm water and this skilled person be blessed to be effective in this task.

उष्णेन hot, warm वाय skilled person उदकेन with water न एधि filled up for us/purpose

Hold the razor/clipper/equipment in hand with the following verse.

ओं शिवो नामासि स्वधितिस्ते पिता नमस्तेऽ अस्तु मा मा हिँसीः ॥

Salutations to the Almighty God, the father and Guide of us all. Please bless the items we use here so that they are effective and efficient and do not cause pain or harm. 

शिवः happiness, wisdom, effectiveness, efficiency नाम name असि so, which, is, are स्वधिति blade, instrument for cutting, clipping etc ते yours पिता father, nurturer नमः salutation ते yours अस्तु be it so मा me मा do not हिँसीः hurt, injured 

Bring the blade/clipper/scissors near to the hair of the child:

ओं स्वधिते मैनँ हिँसीः ॥

May we be blessed to use these items firmly without causing discomfort or injury.

स्वधिते firm मा not एनम् to this हिँसीः hurt, injured

ओं निवर्त्तयाम्यायुषेऽन्नाद्याय प्रजननाय रायस्पोषाय सुप्रजास्त्वाय सुवीर्या ॥

prajana-naaya raayas-poṣhaaya 

suprajaas-tvaaya suveeryaa.8

May God bless us with mental acuity, long life, healthy food, ever-increasing prosperity, and vigor. May our children also be blessed with superior strength, bravery, prosperity, and more.

नि lead, guide वर्त्तयामि intelligence, welfare, mental well-being आयुषे life (not ready to die) अन्नाद्याय proper food प्रजननाय vigor रायस्पोष increasing riches and prosperity सुप्रजास्त्वाय having many descendants सुवीर्या superior health, strength and bravery

  5. This verse about preparing warm water is originally listed earlier – just after the blessing of the barber. It is moved here to accommodate the purification of both the water and instrument – as well as the fact that the water, left too long in the open, cools off quickly and can become too cold for the intended purpose.
