Chooṛaakarma Sanskaara

ओं यत् क्षुरेण मर्चयता सुपेशसा वप्ता वपसि केशान् । 
शुन्धि शिरो मास्यायुः प्रमोषीः ॥

Om yat kshureṇa marchayataa
supeshasaa vaptaa vapasi keshaan.
Shundhi shiro maasyaayu pramoṣheeh.¹

Please use these blessed, sterile instruments to efficiently clip and shave the head of our beautiful child without causing discomfort or injury. May the month-old hair be effectively and cleanly removed.

यत् that, this here क्षुरेण implement, sharp instrument, blade मर्चयता injure, hurt, annoy सुपेशसा beautiful, well-adorned वप्ता to cut वप असि shave him/her/this person केशान् tuft शुन्धि sterile शिर head मास्यायुः months-old प्रमोषीः remove, take away

ओं येनावपत् सविता क्षुरेण सोमस्य राज्ञा वरुणस्य विद्वान् ।
तेन ब्रह्माणो वपतेदमस्य गोमानश्ववानयमस्तु प्रजावान् ॥

Om yenaa-vapat-savitaa kshureṇa
somasya raagyo varuṇasya vidvaan.
Tena brahmaaṇo vapate-damasya
gomaan-ashva-vaanayam-astu prajaavaan.²

O Lord, you bless us with the means to acquire wealth, health, noble children, wisdom, and the ability to travel. Please bless us with this procedure of clipping and shaving our child’s hair. May we calmly and efficiently accomplish this task. May our child be blessed with health and wisdom.

येन that by which अवपत् shaved, has cut सविता efficient, efficacy क्षुरेण knife, scissors, clipping instrument सोमस्य peaceful, calmly राज्ञ: brilliant one वरुणस्य of God, godly विद्वान् knowledgeable/skilled person तेन in same way, similarly ब्रह्माण: God वपत shave/cut इदम् now this अस्य this child’s head, face गोमान् possessions, property अश्ववान् means/method of travelling अयम् this अस्तु let it be प्रजावान्  noble projeny

ओं येन धाता बृहस्पतेरग्नेरिन्द्रस्य चायुषेऽवपत् । 
तेन त आयुषे वपामि सुश्लोक्याय स्वस्तये ॥

Om yena dhaataa brihaspater-
agner-indrasya chaayuṣhe vapat.
Tena-ta aayuṣhe vapaami
sush-lokyaaya svastaye.³

That by which we are blessed with health and long life, may that, our Almighty Lord, who is the efficient cause of everything, bless us to be efficient in our task to clip and shave this child of ours.

येन that by which धाता beholder बृहस्पति God अग्नि energy, efficient cause इन्द्र Protector अस्य head, face च and आयुषे life वपत् cut, shave तेन in same way, similarly त this person(subject/purpose) आयुषे life वपामि wipe off, clean, cut, shave सुश्लोक्याय praise, fame स्वस्तये bliss, well-being, peace, calm

ओं येन भूयश्च रात्र्यां ज्योक् च पश्याति सूर्यम् । 
तेन त आयुषे वपामि सुश्लोक्याय स्वस्तये ॥

Om yena bhooyascha raatryaam
jyok-cha pashyaati sooryam.
Tena ta aayuṣhe vapaami
sush-lokyaaya svastaye.⁴

We praise that force, the Almighty God, by whose blessing we can live our full lifetime. May this act of shaving be blessed to be effectively completed and may our child be blessed with a long life, perfect vision, and may the child’s days and nights all be peaceful and blessed.

येन that by which भूयस् aubundant, again, in addition च and रात्र्यां at night ज्योक् long च and पश्याति see, foresee, insight सूर्यम् daylight, sunlight तेन in same way, similarly त this person(subject/purpose), they आयुषे life वपामि wipe off, clean, cut, shave सुश्लोक्याय praise, fame स्वस्तये bliss, well-being, peace, calm

ओं येन पूषा बृहस्पतेर्वायोरिन्द्रस्य चावपत् । 
तेन ते वपामि ब्रह्मणा जीवातवे जीवनाय दीर्घायुष्ट्वाय वर्चसे ॥

Om yena pooṣhaa brihaspater-
vaayor-indrasya cha-avapat.
Tena te vapaami brahmaṇaa jeevaatave
jeevanaaya deerghaa-yuṣhtvaaya varchase.⁵

May the Almighty Lord, our Protector, continue to bless us and bless our child as we conduct this act of clipping, shaving, and cleaning. May our child be blessed with long, prosperous, and blessed life so as to always live within the blessed light of God.

येन that by which पूषा growth, sun बृहस्पति God वायु air, atmosphere इन्द्र Protector अस्य head, face च and वप cut, shave तेन in same way, similarly ते this person(subject/purpose), they वपामि wipe off, clean, cut, shave ब्रह्मण divine जीवातवे long life जीवनाय life, means of living, दीर्घम् long-lived आयुष life त्वम् you वर्चस light, luster

ओं येन भूरिश्चरादिवं ज्योक् च पश्चाद्धि सूर्यम् । 
तेन ते वपामि ब्रह्मणा जीवातवे जीवनाय सुश्लोक्याय स्वस्तये ॥

Om yena bhoorishcha-raadivam
jyok-cha pashchaaddhi sooryam.
Tena te vapaami brahmaṇaa jeevaatave
jeevanaaya sushlokyaaya svastaye⁶

May the Almighty One, by whose Grace we are blessed in so many ways, also bless our child in this procedure of cutting and shaving from the various sides of the head as well as the back of the head. May our child be blessed with long life. May we enjoy peace, health and prosperity every day of life.

येन that by which भूरिश् variously, in many ways च and दिवं day ज्योक् long पश्चाद् from back, neck सूर्यम् sunlight तेन in same way, similarly ते this person(subject/purpose), they वपामि wipe off, clean, cut, shave ब्रह्मण divine जीवातवे long life जीवनाय life, means of living, सुश्लोक्याय praise, fame स्वस्तये bliss, well-being, peace, calm

ओं त्र्यायुषं जमदग्नेः कश्यपस्य त्र्यायुषम् । 
यद्देवेषु त्र्यायुषं तन्नो अस्तु त्र्यायुषम् ॥

Om tryaa-yuṣham jamadagne
kashyapasya tryaayuṣham.
Yad-deveṣhu tryaayuṣham
tanno astu tryaayuṣham.⁷

May we (may our child) be blessed with three lifetimes’ worth of vitality and health. May we be blessed with freedom of movement and supple, healthy limbs and sense organs. May we be blessed with the presence of wise persons around us. May these blessings come to us all.

त्र्यायुषं tri-fold vital power of celibacy, triple, three hundred जमदग्नेः mobility कश्यपस्य inspired/blessed by God यत् that, who देवेषु of scholars, of wise ones तत् that, those who नः to us अस्तु be it so

ओं त्वं जीव शरदः शतं वर्धमानः ॥

Om tvam jeev sharadah shatam vardhamanah

May you live a long healthy, and prosperous life.

त्वम् you जीव life, live शरदः years शतं hundred वर्धमानः growing, thriving, prosperous
