ओं प्रजापतये स्वाहा
इदं प्रजापतये इदन्न मम

Om (prajaapataye) svaahaa
Idam prajaapataye, idanna mama.2

ओं यदस्य कर्मणोऽत्यरीरिचं यद्वा न्यूनमीहाकरम्
अग्निष्टत् स्विष्टकृद् विद्यात् सर्वस्विष्टं सुहुतं करोतु मे
अग्नये स्विष्टकृते सहुतहुते सर्वप्रायश्चित्ताहुतीनां कामानां
समर्धयित्रे सर्वान्नः कामान्त्समर्द्धय स्वाहा
इदमग्नये स्विष्टकृते इदन्न मम

Om yadasya karmaṇo‘tya-ree-richam
yadvaa nyoonam-ihaa-karam.
Agniṣh-ṭat sviṣhṭa-kṛid vidyaat sarvam
sviṣhṭam suhutam karotu me.
Agnaye sviṣhṭa-kṛite suhuta-hute
sarva-praayash-chitta-ahuteenaam
kaamaanaam samar-dha-yitre
sarvaanah kaamaant-samardhayah svaahaa.
Idam-agnaye sviṣhṭa-kṛite, idanna mama.3

The ceremony now continues thus

ओम् ते गर्भो िमेतु पुमान् बाण इवेषुधिम् ।
वीरो जायतां पुत्रस्ते दशमास्वाहा

Om aa te garbho yonimetu
pumaan baaṇa iveṣhudhim.
Aa veero jaayataam
putraste dashamaasyah svaahaa.4

May the spark of life within the womb follow its sacred and orderly path, developing with flawless integrity. We pray for a harmonious journey, culminating in the safe and timely arrival of a child endowed with courage and vitality.

come ते your योनिम् womb गर्भ: embryo एतु this पुमान् healthy बाण: body इव like, as if, as शुद्ध correct, faultless, free from defect, (also  इवेषुधिम् like an arrow in its quiver) come, be वीर: brave अत्र in this place जायताम् excel, with triumph पुत्र: child दशमा: ten months

ओम् अग्निरैतु प्रथमो देवतानां ोऽस्प्रजां मुञ्चतु मृत्ुपाशात्।
तदयं राजा वरुणोऽनुमन्यतां यथेयं ्त्री पौत्रमघं रोदात् स्वाहा

Om agni-raitu prathamo devtaanaam
So-’syai prajaam muñchatu mrityu-pashaat.
Tadayam raajaa varuṇo-‘numanyataam
Yatheyam stree poutramagham na rodaat svaahaa.5

Oh, Supreme Lord, may the foremost of divine energies protect this life. May this divine force sever the bonds of mortality from this child, ensuring its vitality and safety. May the forces that uphold cosmic and moral order protect this mother from any cause of grief regarding this child. May the mother be free from any depression or anxiety at any time before or after birth.

अग्नि God, energy एतु this प्रथम first देवतानाम् divinity असौ that श्ायते (श्ै) move, go प्रजाम् offspring मुञ्चतु move, go, bestow, grant मृत्ुपाशात् clutch of death or disease तत् that अयम् this राजा kingly, majestic वरुणो vital air अनुमन्यताम् allow, grant, permit यत् that इयम् endeavor, to such extent ्त्री lady, woman पौत्रमघम् postpartum depression not रोदात् weep, sad, emotive अस्यै of this

The husband recited the following mantra while placing his hand on the heart region of the mother.

ओं यत्ते मे हृदये हितमन्तः प्रजापतौ ।
मनेऽहं मां तद्विद्वांसं माहं पौत्रमघं ियाम्

Om yatte suseeme hridaye
hitvantah prajaapatau.
Manye’ham maam tad-vidvaansam
maaham poutramagham niyaam.6

O gracious one (Susīme), that which is placed in your heart is a sacred trust, a reflection of the Creator himself. I know and accept this sacred truth, and I acknowledge this divine life within you. By this sacred understanding, may we be blessed to see our child live a long and healthy life, and may we one day know the joy of holding our grandchildren.

Philosophy in this mantra:

1. The Acknowledgment of the Sacred: The mantra begins by addressing the mother (मे) and immediately defines the embryo not just as a biological entity, but as a divine principle (प्रजापतौ) “placed within her heart.” This establishes the womb as a sacred space and the process of creation as a divine act.

2. The Declaration of Understanding: The husband then states, “I consider myself the knower of this truth” (मनेऽहं मां तद्विद्वांसं). This is a pivotal statement. He is not just a bystander; he is an active, conscious participant who understands the profound significance of the life his wife is nurturing. His role is to be the guardian of this knowledge and, by extension, the protector of the mother and child.

3. The Logical Consequence and Prayer: The final line, “May I not suffer the sorrow of losing a grandchild” (माहं पौत्रमघं ियाम्), is the logical outcome of the first two. It essentially says: “Because we recognize the divine sanctity of this life, and because I pledge to be its conscious guardian, may the result be a long, unbroken line of healthy descendants.” The prayer for the prevention of future sorrow is directly linked to the couple’s present sacred understanding and commitment.

    In essence, the mantra constructs an argument:

    • Premise 1: The life in the womb is divine.
    • Premise 2: I (the husband/father) understand and honor this divinity.
    • Conclusion/Prayer: Therefore, may this sacred process lead to a blessed, multi-generational family, free from tragedy.

    Poorṇa-ahuti

    Three final offerings

    ओं सर्वं वै पूर्णं स्वाहा

    Om sarvam vai poorṇam svaahaa.7

    1. With ths “silent chant” the words om and svaahaa are recited aloud and prajaapataye is silent In that silent moment, one concentrates on God and makes a personal pledge or appeal.
