1.2 Getting dressed
Wearing new/fresh clothes: This act signifies the change from ashram-life and student-life clothing to that of a graduate who is emerging to the world to put his knowledge to use, from student-hood to professional.
Putting on the outfit:
With the mantra the main clothes are to be worn
ओं परिधास्यै यशोधास्यै दीर्घायुत्वाय जरदष्टिरस्मि ।
शतं च जीवामि शरदः पुरूची रायस्पोषमभिसंव्ययिष्ये ॥
Om paridhaasyai yashodhaasyai
deerghaayutvaaya jaradaṣhṭir-asmi.
Shatam cha jeevaami sharadah puroochee
raayas-poṣham-abhisam-vyayiṣhye.1
May my clothing give me a good appearance. May I be blessed with prosperity and health to enable the acquisition of good clothing always.
परिधा attire अस्य of this, this यशोधन preserve glory, fame, good दिर्घायु long lived, long lasting जरदष्टि advancement, longevity, long lived, old अस्मि in this शतं hundred च and जीवामि live, live by शरदः years पुरूची abundant, full, comprehensive रायस्पोष increasing riches, increase prosperity/wealth अभिसंवृत accompanied by/with अभिसंवृत wrap into
Wearing the Outer garb
With this verse, outerwear, such as jackets, shawls, etc., is to be worn.
ओं यशसा मा द्यावापृथिवी यशसेन्द्राबृहस्पती ।
यशो भगश्च मा विदद् यशो मा प्रतिपद्यताम् ॥
Om yashasaa maa dyaavaa-prithivee yashasendraa-brihaspatee.
Yasho bhagashcha maa vidad yasho maa pratipadyataam.2
May there be fame and honor for me wherever I go. May I be successful and honorable among everyone regardless of their wealth and power. O Lord, grant me good opportunities for fame, glory, prosperity, and comfort.
यशसा fame, honor, glory मा to me द्यावापृथिवी atmosphere, earth, space heavens इन्द्र All-powerful God, powerful people बृहस्पती God the protector, prosperous people भगश् comfort – fame, wealth, prosperity च and विदद् grant, give, bestow प्रतिपद्यताम् undertake, accomplish, put on, may come to me
Putting on Garland and/or necklace
With these mantras, a garland is worn. A necklace can also be worn.
ओं या आहरज्जमदग्निः श्रद्धायै कामायेन्द्रियाय ।
ता अहं प्रतिगृह्णामि यशसा च भगेन च ॥
Om yaa aahara-jamadagnih
shraddhaayai kaamaaye-indriyaaya.
Taa aham pratigrihaṇaami
yashasaa cha bhagena cha.3
May I face the world confidently. May I always control my senses. May my ambitions be fulfilled. May good honor and fortune be with me.
या these, this आहर dress, taking, procuring, livelihood जमदग्निः given by, has श्रद्धायै having confidence, with faith, with reverence कामाय long for, desire, wish, ambitions इन्द्रियाय senses ता to those अहं I, me प्रतिगृह्णामि accept यशसा honor च and भगेन fortune
ओं यद्यशोप्सरसामिन्द्रश्चकार विपुलं पृथु ।
तेन सङ्ग्रथिताः सुमनस आबध्नामि यशो मयि ॥
Om yadyasho-apasarasaam-indrashcha-kaar vipulam prithu.
Tena sangrathitaah sumansa aabadhnaami yasho mayi.4
May I be connected to those who are loyal, like this garland (of flowers) knotted together. May my presence bring delight and joy to those around me and bring honor and glory to me.
यत् that यशः glory, fame अप्सरसाम delight, enjoyment इन्द्र power कृ comprise of, made up of विपुलं ample, extensive, a lot पृथु large, great तेन that सङ्ग्रथिताः strung together, knotted together सुमनस good-minded आबध्नामि place, tie, tether, show यशो glory, reputation मयि for me
Wearing Headwear
With these mantras, headwear, shawl, pendants, and similar items can be worn.
ओं युवा सुवासाः परिवीत आगात स उ श्रेयान् भवति जायमानः ॥
Om yuvaa suvaasaah pariveeta aagaat
sa u shreyaan bhavati jaayamaanah.5
This young initiate is well-adorned and ready for this stage of life, transforming his/her life into one of wisdom and fame. May our child be victorious in these endeavors.
युवा young, youthful सु good, beautiful वासस् clothes, dress, garment परिवीत encompassed by (the sacred thread), surrounding, all sides आगात come, arrive स this, he, she उ now, indeed श्रेयान् better, preferable भवति become, originate, transform जायमानः victorious, famous
ओम् अलङ्करणमसि भूयोऽलङ्करणं भूयात् ॥
Om alangkaraṇamasi bhooyo-alangkaraṇam bhooyaat.6
Just like the ornaments and jewelry that make the wearer look good, may my fame and good reputation make me shine with glory.
अलङ्करण ornament, decoration, making ready, splendour असि is, of भूयात् be blessed repeatedly
