Seemantonnayana Sanskaara

ओं सुमित्रिया न आप ओषधयः सन्तु ।
दुर्मित्रियास्तस्मै सन्तु योऽस्मान्द्वेष्टि यञ्च वयं द्विष्मः ॥

Om sumitriyaa na aapa oṣhadhayah santu.
Durmitriyaas-tasmai santu 
yo’smaan-dveṣhṭi yam cha vayam dviṣhmah.²

May we be blessed with the things that are beneficial for us. May the waters we get be healthy and good for us. May the medicines and elements we get be beneficial to us. May anything or anyone who is not friendly or beneficial to us be away from us and in very different places and directions from us.

सुमित्र good friend न us आप waters ओषधयः medicinal plants सन्तु good, peaceful, beneficial, and दुर्मित्रिय unfriendly यः which तस्मै unto them, unto him असमान different, going in different direction from us, not having same cause द्वेष्टि hate, loathe यः which च and वयम् we द्विष्मः enemy, foe

मूर्द्धानं दिवोऽअरतिं पृथिव्या वैश्वानरमृतऽआ जातमग्निम् ।
कविꣳ सम्राजमतिथि जनानामासन्ना पात्रं जनयन्त देवाः ॥

Moord-dhaanam divo’aratim prithivyaa
vaishvaanar-amrita’aa jaatamagnim.
Kavim samraajam-atithi janaanaama-
asannaa paatram janayanta devaah.³

May our child be born a leader who will shine among the wise and intelligent people and bring happiness to all around him/her. May our child uphold truth, be worthy of being respected everywhere, and be like the earth, uplift everyone. 

मूर्द्धानम् top, summit, ahead दिवः brilliant, bright अरतिम् moving quickly पृथिव्या like earth वैश्वानरम् omnipresent, sun, sunlight, bring happiness to all ऋते truth, logic, divine law आजातम् born अग्निम् fire, energy कविम् leader सम्राजमिति rule over, reign, like a king who rules over all equally अतिथिम् worthy of being hosted, worthy guest जनानाम् good people आसन् rest आ पात्रम् materials of earth, vessels/pots/leaf/minerals/etc  जनयन्त produce, generate देवाः learned ones, wise ones

ओं येनादितेः सीमानं नयति प्रजापतिर्महते सौभगाय ।
तेनाहमस्यै सीमानं नयामि प्रजामस्यै जरदष्टिं कृणोमि ॥

Om yenaaditeh seemaanam nayati prajaapatir-mahate saubhagaaya.
Tenaahamasyai seemaanam nayaami prajaamasyai jaradaṣhṭi kriṇomi.⁴

The Almighty God, at the start of this cycle of creation, set boundaries and limits to his creation, even with all its beauty and wealth. So, too, my boundaries have been set for this lifetime. May our child enjoy all the liberties of nature for the boundaries set until old age.

येन that, with that आदितेः from the beginning सीमानं boundary नयति set, decide, ascertain प्रजापति God महते mighty सौभगाय wealth, enjoyment, welfare तेन thus अहम् I, me अस्य of this सीमानं boundary नयामि set प्रजाम offspring जरदष्टिं attain old age, long life कृणोमि do

ओं राकामहं सुहवां सुष्टुती हुवे शृणोतु नः सुभगा बोधतु त्मना ।
सीव्यत्वपः सूच्याच्छिद्यमानया ददातु वीरं शतदायमुख्यम् ॥

Om raakaam-aham suhavaam suṣhṭutee huve
shrinotu nah subhagaa bodhatu-tmanaa.
Seevyat-vapah soochyaach-chhidyamaanayaa
dadaatu veeram shatadaayam-ukthyam.⁵

O beautiful lady, your countenance is like the full moon, glowing and lovely. Please listen to my expression of tender and loving words. I pray today that you are always blessed with wisdom and good fortune. May you always be calm and pure in your thoughts and actions. May you always keep us united like the moon pulling the waters of Earth. May you give us a strong, noble, and brave child who will be praiseworthy in his innumerable work to uplift the world.

राकाम् full moon, illuminated अहम् I, me सुहवाम् one who listens willingly सुष्टुती sweetest of praises हुवे say, exclaim शृणोतु please listen attentively नः us, my सुभगा good fortune बोधतु through wisdom and understanding त्मना mindful, your mind सीव्यत् join together, unite अपः calm like water सूच्या pure in conduct अच्छिद्यमानय not fragile, strong ददातु bestow, give, grant, dedicate वीरं brave शतदायम् hundred-fold, numberable times उक्थ्यम् praiseworthy

यास्ते राके सुमतयः सुपेशसो याभिर्ददासि दाशुषे वसूनि ।
ताभिर्नो अद्य सुमना उपागहि सहस्रपोषं सुभरो रराणा ॥

Yaaste raake sumatayah supeshaso
yaabhir-dadaasi daashushe vasooni.
Taabhirno adya sumanaa upaagahi
sahasra-posham subhage raraanaa.⁶

O intelligent lady, you are always glowing, peaceful, and beautiful. I pray today that we are blessed with unmeasurable wealth and will always be able to make innumerable acts of generosity. May you always give me the benefit of your wisdom so that we remain devoted to God and have an exemplary life.

यस्तै entrusted राके beautiful (like the moon) सुमतयः intelligent, well-shaped, beautiful सुपेशसः well-adorned, beautiful, lovely याभि whereby, that ददासि bestow दाशुषे pious, devout वसूनि wealth, bringing fortune ताभि with these नः I, me, us अद्य today सुमना generous उपागहि attain, go, approach सहस्रपोषं thousand-fold, innumerable सुभर abundant रराण bountiful, bestowing

What do you envision?

Wife responds:

प्रजां पशून्त्सौभाग्यं मह्यं दीर्घायुष्ट्वं पत्युः ॥

Prajaam pashoont-saubhaagyam mayhem deerghaayuṣhṭvam patyuh.⁷

I see our baby, our child. I can envision our prosperity and good fortune. I see a long, happy life together with you, my husband, and my family.

प्रजां child, children पशु property सौभाग्य success, fortune, welfare मह्यं me दीर्घायुष्ट्वं long life पत्युः by husband

ओं वीरसूस्त्वं भव, जीवसूस्त्वं भव, जीवपत्नी त्वं भव ॥

Om veerasoostvam bhava
Jeevasoostvam bhava
Jeevapatnee tvam bhava.⁸

May you be bless with a strong and brave child, May you be blessed with a healthy child, full of life and may your husband enjoy a long life alongside you.
