Na mai bhagwan hoȯ

Na mai bhagwan hoȯ
Na mai shaitaan hoȯ
Are duniyaa jo chaahe samjhe
mai to insaan hoȯ

Mujh me bhalaaee bhee
Mujh me buraaee bhee
Laakho hai mail dil me
Thoṛaa safaaee bhee
Thoṛaa saa nek hoȯ
Thoṛaa beimaan hoȯ
Duniyaa jo chaahe samjhe
mai to insaan hoȯ

Na koee raaj hai
Na sar par taaj hai
Phir bhee hamaare ḍam
Se dharatee kee laaj hai
Tan kaa gareeb hoȯ
Man kaa dhanvaan hoȯ
Duniyaa jo chaahe samjhe
mai to insaan hoȯ

Jeevan kaa geet hai
Sur me na taal me
Uljhee hai saaree duniyaa
Rotee ke jaal me
Kaisaa andher hai
Mai bhee hairaan hoȯ
Duniyaa jo chaahe samjhe
mai to insaan hoȯ

I am neither God nor am I the devil. The world, however, chooses to judge me – I am human.

I have good virtues as well as bad ties. Although my heart is polluted, yet, I have some divine qualities. My life does reflect both honesty and dishonesty.

I am not a king – I do not wear a crown. I work to protect the dignity of the earth. I may be materially poor, but I have a rich mind.

This is a song of life. I do not understand why there is darkness (of ignorance) in the world. There is sorrow and hunger. I do not care for the melodies and rhythms – I pray for happiness.

Mother India (1957); Mohammed Rafi
