Paanee re paanee teraa rang kaisaa
Jismė milaa do lage us jaisaa
Paanee re paanee
Is duniyaa mė jeene vaale
aise bhee jeete hai
Rookhee sukhee khaate hai
aur thanḍa paanee peete hai
Tere ek ghoȯnt mė miltaa
jannat kaa aaraam
Paanee re paanee tera rang kaisaa
Bhookhe kee bhukha aur pyaas jaisaa
Paanee re paanee…
Gangaa se jab mile to bantaa
gangaajal too paavan
Daadal se tu mile to
rimjhim barse saavan
Saavan aaya saavan aaya
rimjhim barse paanee
Aag oṛhkar aag pahankar
Pighlee jaaye javaanee
Kaheė pe dekho chhat ṭapaktee
Jeena huaa haraam
Paanee re paanee tera rang kaisaa
Duniya banaane vale rab jaisaa
Paanee re paanee…..
Vaise to har rang mė
teraa jalvaa rang jamaaye
Jab too phir ummeedȯ par
tera rang samajh na aaye
Kalee khile to jhaṭ aa jaaye
patjhaṛ kaa paigaam
Paanee re paanee tera rang kaisaa
Sau saal jeene kee ummeedȯ jaisaa
Paanee re paanee…..
O water! O water, what color do You have? It’s the same color in which You are mixed.
Some people in this world live like this also. They just eat dry food and drink cool water (and become what they eat and drink). But, with just a sip of You, one gets heavenly satisfaction.
When You mix with the Ganges, You become the pure Gangajal; When You mix with the clouds, You become rain-fall. Monsoon is here, rain is falling; as if it is covered with fire my prime youth seems to be melting because of it; Raindrops are falling through the hole in the roof, and living life has become difficult. O water, what color do You have? It’s like the hunger and thirst of a starved ones
But You, even when mixed with anything, Your presence outshines; Tet when You wash out over one’s hopes, Your color can’t be understood. It seems as if a blooming flower bud is being reminded of autumn. O water, what color do You have? It’s like a hope of living for a hundred years
Shor (1972); Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh
