Bhavani Ashtakam

The Bhavani Ashtakam is a rendition of realization and invocation to God. Composed by Adi Shankarachayra, the eight verses (Asktakam) forms part of the ancient 8-stanzas poetry of the ancient times. The skill set required to present a full lesson within eight verses is even more fascinating when we realize that each verse has four lines and each line and stanza fits a certain rhyming pattern with identical letters and sounds are placed at the end of each word in each line, exemplifying the beauty of Sanskrit. The Bhavani Ashtakam recognizes God as our Universal Mother, the caretaker, the Protector…

Atma Shatakam

The आत्मषटकम् Atmashatakam, also known as the निर्वाणषटकम् Nirvaanashatakam was composed by Adi Shankaracharya. These are ideal songs for an enlightened soul. Ultimate realization comes from knowing one's soul. Here we recognize that there is no reality other than the true self. The ultimate "I" is addressed in these shlokas, creating a distinction between the elements which we usually feel are the self versus the Ultimate Self. Everything comes from and merges into Brahman; therefore, everything is Brahman. Mano-buddhi-ahamkara chittaani…

Hastaamalaka Stotram

The origin of this beautiful Stotram can only be related as follows: Once, during Sage Adi Shankaracharya's visit to a particular village, a brahman named Prabhaakara approached the sage and begged him to assist with his son, who was deemed to be dumb and foolish because he does not speak to anyone or mingle with friends or family. The great Sage, upon meeting the boy, knew that he was a great and noble soul and that his aloofness and silence were a choice of meditative contemplation. To display the young boy's greatness, the sage conversed thus, कस्त्वं शिशो कस्य कुतोऽसि…

Shiva Sankalpam Sukta

Shiva Sankalpam Sukta

शिव संकल्प सूक्तShiva Sankalpam Sookta Prayers for the protection of the mind (with English translation of Pt Usharbudh Arya) The Shiva Sankalpam Sukta consists of six verses and is from the 34th chapter of the Yajur Veda. The Shivasankalpam sukta infer a special संकल्प Sankalpa - desire/intent. Everyone has intents and desires, which can easily become an obsession. However, when a Sankalpa (a specific intent) is backed by the purity of thought/mind, it is Shiva-like. An intent that is not harmful to the self or to others is inherently good. It becomes focused, meditative, benevolent, auspicious, and powerful - and yet with…

Looking back at The Ramballi/Mahadeo Under-17 Cricket tournament 2018

Despite challenges the Ramballi/Mahadeo Under-17 tournament was a success - from the Guyana Chronicle, 23/02/2019 NOT many cricket competitions are being sponsored in Essequibo and in particular for schools; yet I was indeed heartened by the initiative taken by co-sponsors Harrischan Ramballi and Yog Mahadeo of the Mahadeo Foundation. In fact, generally, cricket in the county is quite dormant. I have had the privilege, though, of witnessing the majority of matches in the competition, which began in November 2018 and concluded on February 20, 2019. It was earmarked for secondary schools in the Region. Mr Ramballi was very passionate about…
