Vivaah Sanskaara – Part I

ओमृताषाड् ऋतधामाग्निर्गन्धर्वः।
स न इदं ब्रह्म क्षत्रं पातु तस्मै स्वाहा वाट्॥
इदमृताषाहे ऋताधाम्नेऽग्नये गन्धर्वाय इदन्न मम  ॥

Om ṛitaa-ṡhaaḍ ṛita-dhaama-agnir gandharvah.
Sa na idam brahma kshatram paatu tasmai svaahaa-vaaṭ.
Idam ṛitaa-ṡhaahe ṛita-dhaamne agnaye
gandharvaaya idanna mama.¹

Homage to you, O Almighty Creator, you are the Upholder of the world and its natural laws. Homage to you, O Creator and Protector. Please protect us as we embrace and uphold truth and logic. This prayer is for the sake of upholding truth and ling according to true logic.

ऋताषाड् seated/set in truth, the truth of natural laws ऋतधामन् abiding in truth, upholder of the truth of natural laws अग्नि God, fire  गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth स he, she, that न us इदम् this ब्रह्म God, creator क्षत्रम् supreme power, mighty पातु skill, skillful, protection तस्मै therefore, hence स्वाहा homage, offer वाट् (an exclamation on the previous word), happy इदम this ऋताषाहे maintaining truth ऋताधाम्नेऽग्नये maintaining logic गन्धर्वाय one who controls oneself इदन्न this is not मम for me.

इदं इदमोषधिभ्योऽप्सरोभ्यः इदन्न मम ॥

Om ṛitaaśhaaḍ ṛitadhaama-agnir
Gandharvas-tasy-oṣhadhayo
apa-saraso mudo naama taabhya svaahaa.²
Idam oṣha-dhibhyo apsaro bhyah idanna mama.

Homage to you, O Almighty Creator, you are the Upholder of the world and its natural laws. Homage to you, O Creator and Provider of all the natural medicines, plants, waters, and all of nature. Homage to you, O Preserver of the world who upholds all truth and logic. Please protect and bless us with happiness and the skill to uphold truth and logic in our lives. This prayer is for the preservation of the nature of health-giving. This is not for my ego.

ऋताषाड् seated/set in truth, the truth of natural laws ऋतधामन् abiding in truth, upholder of the truth of natural laws अग्नि God, fire  गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth तस्य his ओषधयः natural medicines, medicinal parts of nature, medicinal herbs and shrubs अप्सरसः water in nature (the waters of oceans, lakes, rivers, seas), space मुदः useful, providing happiness and health नाम of name, me ताभ्यः from the provider ओषधभ्यो giver of medicines अप्सरोभ्यः giver of waters

ओं सꣳहितो विश्वसामा सूर्योगन्धर्वः।
स न इदं ब्रह्म क्षत्रं पातु तस्मै स्वाहा वाट्॥
इदं संहिताय विश्वसाम्ने सूर्याय गन्धर्वाय इदन्न मम ॥

Om sam hitah vishva-saamaa
Sooryo-gandharvah.
Sa na idam brahma kshatram
paatu tasmai svaahaa-vaaṭ.³
Idam samhitaaya vishva-saamne sooryaaya
gandhar-vaaya idanna mama.

Homage to you, O God, you Create everything and the science of everything. You create the sun and the light, heat, and other benefits of the sun. You are the upholder of the earth and all planets and creatures. Homage to you, O Creator and Protector; please bless and protect us. This prayer is for knowledge of the sciences and nature, not for my ego.

संहितः all science विश्वसामा equality, treating all equally सूर्यो sun गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth स he, she, that न us इदम् this ब्रह्म God, creator क्षत्रम् supreme power, mighty पातु skill, skillful, protection तस्मै therefore, hence स्वाहा homage, offer वाट् (an exclamation on the previous word), happy इदम this संहिताय giver of sciences विश्वसाम्ने preserver of equality सूर्याय giver of the sun गन्धर्वाय giver of the earth इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओं संहितः विश्वसामा सूर्यो गन्धर्वस्तस्य मरीचयोऽप्सरसः आयुवो नाम।  ताभ्यः स्वाहा ॥
इदं मरीचिभ्योऽप्सरोभ्यः आयुभयः इदन्न मम ॥

Om sam hitah vishva-saamaa
sooryo gandharvas-tasya mareechayo
apsarasa aayuvo naam. Taabhya svaahaa.
Idam mareechibhyo apsarobhya
aayubhyah idanna mama.⁴

Homage to you, O God, you Create everything and the science of everything. You create the sun and the light, heat, and other benefits of the sun. You are the upholder of the earth and all planets and creatures. You have given us life and made us all compatible with the world and yet distinct and separate from each other. Homage to you, O Master. This prayer is in praise of our Creator and Sustainer. This is not for my ego.

संहितः all science विश्वसामा equality, treating all equally सूर्यो sun गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth तस्य his मरीचयः rays of sun अप्सरसः water in nature (the waters of oceans, lakes, rivers, seas) आयुवो life, being compatible, can mingle and yet remain separate नाम of name, me ताभ्यः from the provider इदम this मरीचिभ्योऽप्सरोभ्यः creator of the sunlight and the waters आयुभयः creator of life इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओं सुषुम्णः सूर्यरश्मिचन्द्रमा गन्धर्वः।
स न इदं ब्रह्म क्षत्रं पातु तस्मै स्वाहा वाट्॥
इदं सुषुम्णाय सूर्यरश्मये चन्द्रमसे गन्धर्वाय इदन्न मम ॥

Om suṣhumṇah soorya-rashmish
chandramaa gandharvah.
Sa na idam brahma kshatram
paatu tasmai svaahaa-vaaṭ
Idam suṣumṇaaya soorya-rashma-ye
chandramase gandharvaaya idanna mama.⁵

Homage to you, O Almighty Creator of the galaxies, suns, moons, constellations, space, planets, and earth. Homage to you, O Creator and Protector, for your Creation and the benefit of all creation. You have created the sun and moon and given them the ability to bless us with light, heat, energy, and gravity. O Creator and Protector. Homage to you, O Creator and Protector; please bless and protect us. This prayer is for the continued perseverance of the sun, moon, space, air, waters, and earth. This is not for personal gain.

सुषुम्णः gracious giver सूर्यरश्मि sun rays चन्द्रमा moon and moonlight गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth स he, she, that न us इदम् this ब्रह्म God, creator क्षत्रम् supreme power, mighty पातु skill, skillful, protection तस्मै therefore, hence स्वाहा homage, offer वाट् (an exclamation on the previous word), happy इदम this नक्षत्रेभ्योऽप्सरोभ्यो giver of the constellations and space सुषुम्णाय gracious one सूर्यरश्मये creator of sun चन्द्रमसे creator of moon गन्धर्वाय creator of earth इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओं सुषुम्णः सूर्यरश्मिचन्द्रमा गन्धर्वस्तस्य नक्षत्रान्यप्सरसो भेकुरयो नाम। 
ताभ्यः स्वाहा ॥
इदं नक्षत्रेभ्योऽप्सरोभ्यो भकुरिभ्यः इदन्न मम ॥

Om suṣumṇah soorya-rashmish-chandrama
Gandharvas-tasya nakshatraaṇy-apsaraso
bhekurayo naama. Taabhya svaahaa.⁶
Idam nakshatrebhyo apsarobhyo
bhekuribhyah idanna mama

Homage to you, O most Gracious Almighty Creator of the galaxies, suns, moons, constellations, space, planets, and earth. Homage to you, O God, our Creator and Preserver. You bless us with the world and its benefits just like you create the sun and moon and bless them with lift and reflection. This prayer is for the benefit of space, air, water, earth, and ether. This is not for personal gain. 

सुषुम्णः gracious giver सूर्यरश्मि sun rays चन्द्रमा moon and moonlight गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth नक्षत्रान्य constellations अप्सरसः water, flowing space भेकुरयो creator of light नाम of name, me ताभ्यः from the provider इदम this नक्षत्रेभ्योऽप्सरोभ्यो creator of space, constellations and planets भकुरिभ्यः creator of the light इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओमिषिरो विश्वव्यचा वातो गन्धर्वः।
स न इदं ब्रह्म क्षत्रं पातु तस्मै स्वाहा वाट्॥
इदमिषिराय विश्वव्यचसे वाताय गन्धर्वाय इदन्न मम ॥

Om iṣhiro vishva-vyachaa vaato gandharvah.
Sa na idam brahma kshatram
paatu tasmai svaahaa-vaaṭ.⁷
Idam iṣhiraaya vishva-vyachase vaataaya
gandharvaaya idanna mama.

Homage to you, O Almighty God, the upholder of truth and wisdom. Homage to you, O Creator, who is ever-present in every speck of the entire expanse of creation. Homage to you, O Lord, you are ever-present, like the air we breathe and from which we get instantaneous energy. Homage to you, O Creator and Protector; please bless and protect us. This prayer is in homage to the ever-flowing energy and blessings. This is not for the ego.

इषिरः fast, quick, swift, instantaneous विश्वव्यचाः all of the expanse of space, all-pervading वातः wind, like the wind गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth स he, she, that न us इदम् this ब्रह्म God, creator क्षत्रम् supreme power, mighty पातु skill, skillful, protection तस्मै therefore, hence स्वाहा homage, offer वाट् (an exclamation on the previous word), happy इदम this इषिराय fast, swift विश्वव्यचसे of all space and creation वाताय wind-like गन्धर्वाय earth इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओमिषिरो विश्वव्यचा वातो गन्धर्वस्तस्यापो अप्सरस ऊर्जो नाम  ताभ्यः स्वाहा ॥
इदमद्भ्योऽप्सरोभ्यऽऊर्ग्भ्य इदन्न मम ॥

Om iṣhiro vishva-vyachaa vaato
Gandharvas-tasyaapo
ap-sara-se oorjo naama. Taabhya svaaha.⁸
Idam adabhyo apsarobhya-oorjbhyah
idanna mama.

Homage to you, O Almighty God, the upholder of truth and wisdom. Homage to you, O Creator, you are ever-present in every speck of the entire expanse of creation. Homage to you, O Lord, you are ever-present, like the air we breathe and from which we get instantaneous energy. Please bestow us health, strength, and the strength to uphold truth and righteousness. This prayer is for the blessings of all of creation from our remarkable and fantastic creator. This is not for my ego.

इषिरः fast, quick, swift, instantaneous विश्वव्यचाः all of the expanse of space, all-pervading वातः wind, like the wind गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth तस्य his आपः water and air अप्सर: water, flowing space ऊर्जः power, strength, vigor नाम of name, me ताभ्यः from the provider अद्भ्योऽप्सरोभ्यऽऊर्ग्भ्य remarkable and fantastic creator of all creation इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओं भुज्युः सुपर्णो यज्ञो गन्धर्वः।
स न इदं ब्रह्म क्षत्रं पातु तस्मै स्वाहा वाट्॥
इदं भुज्यवे सुपर्णाय यज्ञाय गन्धर्वाय इदन्न मम ॥

Om bhujyuh suparṇo yagyo gandharvah.
Sa na idam brahma kshatram
paatu tasmai svaahaa-vaaṭ.⁹
Idam bhuj-yave suparṇaaya yagyaaya gandharvaaya idanna mama.

Homage to you, O benevolent Lord; you uphold all of creation. This yagya is our humble homage to you. Please bestow unto us the best of happiness, wealth, and health. O Creator and Protector, bless us and protect us always. This prayer is for the God of our Yagya, the giver of happiness and prosperity; this is not for the ego.

भुज्युः wealthy, happiness, pleasures सुपर्णो best upbringing यज्ञो yagya गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth स he, she, that न us इदम् this ब्रह्म God, creator क्षत्रम् supreme power, mighty पातु skill, skillful, protection तस्मै therefore, hence स्वाहा homage, offer वाट् (an exclamation on the previous word), happy इदम this इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओं भुज्युः सुपर्णो यज्ञो गन्धर्वस्तस्य दक्षिणा अप्सरस स्तावा नाम।  ताभ्यः स्वाहा ॥
इदं दक्षिणाभ्योऽप्सरोभ्यः स्तावाभ्यः इदन्न मम ॥

Om bhujyuh suparṇo yagyo gandharvas-tasya
dakshiṇaa apsarasa staavaa naam. Tabhyah svaahaa.¹⁰
Idam dakshiṇaabhyo apsarobhyah
staavaabhyah idanna mama.

Homage to you, O Lord. You are our Benefactor who bestows happiness and prosperity. You are the God of our devotion. You are ever-present everywhere at all times. O Lord, we offer our praises and prayers to you. This prayer is a homage of our God, who constantly gifts us with His blessings. This is not for the ego.

भुज्युः wealthy, happiness, pleasures सुपर्णो best upbringing यज्ञो yagya गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth तस्य his दक्षिणा gift given to scholars and deserving ones, to the right अप्सरस water, flowing space स्तावा praises नाम of name, me ताभ्यः from the provider इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओं प्रजापतिर्विश्वकर्मा मनो गन्धर्वः।
स न इदं ब्रह्म क्षत्रं पातु तस्मै स्वाहा वाट्॥
इदं प्रजापतये विश्वकर्मणे मनसे गन्धर्वाय इदन्न मम ॥

Om prajaapatir vishvakarmaa mano gandharvah.
Sa na idam brahma kshatram paatu tasmai svaahaa-vaaṭ.¹¹
Idam prajaapataye vishva-kar-ma-ṇe manase gandharvaaya idanna mama.

Homage to you, O Master Designer of the world. You are the focus of the minds of those who engage in devotion. O Creator and Protector, please bless and protect us. This prayer is for the constant presence of God in my mind. This is not for the ego.

प्रजापतिः nurturer विश्वकर्मा master designer मनः mind गन्धर्व upholder of truth and wisdom, upholder of earth स he, she, that न us इदम् this ब्रह्म God, creator क्षत्रम् supreme power, mighty पातु skill, skillful, protection तस्मै therefore, hence स्वाहा homage, offer वाट् (an exclamation on the previous word), happy इदम this इदन्न this is not मम for me

ओं प्रजापतिर्विश्वकर्मा मनो गन्धर्वस्तस्य।
ऋक्सामान्यप्सरस एष्टभ्यो नाम। ताभ्यः स्वाहा ॥
इदमृक्सामेभ्योप्सरोभ्यः एष्टभ्यः इदन्न मम ॥

Om prajaapatir vishva karmaa
mano gandharvas-tasya rik-saamaany-
apsarasa eṣhṭayo naama. Taabhya svaahaa.¹²
Idam-rik-saam-ebhyo apsaro-bhyah
eṣhṭi-bhyah idanna mama.

Homage to you, O Master Designer of the world. You are the Creator, Uplifter, and Benefactor of all. You are the focus of the minds of those who engage in devotion, and you grant our noble wishes. O Lord, you are the Giver of the Holy Vedas, and your wisdom flows through the entire world. Homage to you, O Lord. This prayer is for the continued flow of Vedic wisdom; this is not for the ego.
