O bride, you and I accept each other voluntarily. With deep affection we have accepted each other and recognize the responsibilities toward each other. O beautiful one, at this moment, I am the harmony of music, and you are the words of wisdom. I am like the sun2 and you are like the earth3. We are blessed to be married and to live together. May we be blessed with noble children. May we live contentedly and happily with each other until ripe old age – and during our life together, let us see and hear the best things in life.

The शिला (shilaa) is the vow of solid foundation. The Bride places her right foot on a rock4

Groom says

O bride, please ascend this stone as a mark of courage. May you assume the firmness of a rock in your life. May your decisions be always firm. May you resist all problems and overcome any quarrel. May you always overcome and overwhelm any threats to you and our family.

  1. Paaraskaara Grihyasutra 1.6.3
  2. . The sun causes the production of things on earth through its sunlight and circulation of water/rain. It even holds the earth in place through gravity.
  3. The earth produces the necessities of life, including the circulation of air (oxygen circulation through plants); the balance of waters and air; and the ever-present patience with humanity
  4. The piece of stone is usually the grinding stone (Sil) in the Kitchen (this is being used to grind spices and other food ingredients – that is, through the action of using the stone, the food is given its best flavors. This stone symbolically represents the firmness (rocklike) of the vows that are being exchanged.
