Sprinkling water in different directions3
- Each of the 5 chants of this mantra focuses on an aspect of its request: prajayaa – good children, pashubhih – harmony with other species, brahmavarchase – physical and spiritual wisdom, annadyena – grains and food (that is, health and strength), and samedhaya – prosperity and luxury.
- Ashvalayana Grihyasutra 1.10.12
- Water is sprinkled in different directions, outside of the Kunda. The significance of water in Agnihotra is manifold: 1) Washing/cleaning – may the mind be washed clean of any negative; 2) Water represents cooling (opposing) force to fire – where there is fire there should be water; 3) Where the fires of passions arise there should be the cooling temperament of good senses; (4) Water flows from the ultimate source of Godhead (a reference to Ganga flowing from the head of Shiva); (5) Water also represent the force of God – e.g., the great flood of Manu. (6) Water is an alien force to earth that provided the catalyst to life.
