Today, we turn the pages of our immortal history and sing, narrate, and share this holy and inspirational story of the Great and powerful Maharishi Swami Dayanand Sarasvati. Let us share the story of the one who was the foundation of joy, wisdom, and bliss for us all, the Great Maharishi. Our infinite salutations to you Rishivar. Our eternal gratitude to you, Rishi Dayanand. You are the fierce protector and expert upholder of our Dharma. Our eternal salutations to you.
In Tankara, a village in Gujrat, India, a handsome boy was born to a Brahmin family. The father was Karsanlal Ji, and the mother was Amritbai. From this couple, the world received a priceless treasure. We bow our heads to that holy place in Tankara.
At the Naamkaran Sanskaara, this handsome and beloved son of Karsanlal and Amritbai was named Moolshankar. Moolshankar’s father taught him language and other essentials, which he mastered in his fifth year. He was initiated with the Sacred Thread in his eighth year. And so started his life’s journey.
4The uniqueness of every great person is seen from their childhood. In Moolshankar’s fourteenth year, on the night of Shivraatri, as he witnessed the rats and insects running all over the head of the idol of Shiva, Moolji immediately realized the futility of idol worship.
And so, one day, Moolji said to his Mother, “Ma, this world is temporary. I will search for truth and salvation for which this life is worthy.” The father, who overheard this conversation, decided to get Moolshankar married quickly to settle him down in his family life. Karsanlal started to make preparations for Moolshankar’s marriage.
Hearing of these plans to get him married, the young man was unhappy. So, on one lonely night, he left the comfort of his home, and his life immediately underwent drastic changes. He was then initiated by a sage and became Brahmacharee Shuddha Chaitanya. His choices may seem perplexing to us mere mortals because sometimes we cannot understand the divine illusive play of the Almighty.
The young Brahmacharee roamed around various places in search of wisdom. His practice of Yoga intensified. After some time, Rishi Poornaanada initiated the Brahmacharee into the order of Sanyaas. From this initiation emerged the glorious and famous name and person, Swami Dayanand Sarasvati, whose world-famous name has captured our hearts.
Swamiji undertook intense meditations and penance. And, he continued roaming in search of his true Guru. Some glimpses of Swamiji’s journey in search of his Guru continue to inspire us. He reached Vindhyachal from Gujrat, and took a long journey across to the Himalayas.
On his journey, he went on pilgrimages, went to gathering places, and went to the mountains. He traveled through jungles, forests, and towns. The Master of Yoga spent time in various hermitages, ashrams, and places of penance. Everywhere, he saw faces of mystery, misery, discrimination, and pain. He met and spoke with a vast variety of persons: sadhus, saints, elderly persons, yoga practitioners, ascetics, Siddhas, knowledgeable persons, meditative people, wise persons, and fake and foolish persons. None, no one could have created an impact on Swami’s mind. The fanciest of foods seemed bland to him, and nothing was attractive to him. Oh, the young Yogi’s heart became dejected as he could not find anyone who inspired him to be his Guru. Tears flowed from Swamiji’s eyes as he continued his search.
An old saint gave Swamiji the directions of a unique Saint, Swami Virjanand, who lived in another state. A light appeared out of the darkness for Swami Dayanand Ji as he immediately set out to meet him. Then, one day, the young Sanyasi reached his destination, and his thirsty eyes were immediately filled with bliss at the sight of his Guru, Swami Virjaanand. The Guru, who was physically blind, immediately perceived the light of this new student and understood his vast talent and potential. With his permission, Swami Dayanand became the disciple of Swami Virjananda, a path that set out the future of Mother India. Swami Ji practiced a lot in the Guru Ashram. Through his intense focus and meditation, he quickly became proficient in every subject and exemplified that those who are diligent will reach their destination expeditiously.
By the grace of Guru Virjanand, Yogiraj Swami Dayanand Ji became blessed with immense wisdom and was like a unique emperor of the world of wisdom. Swami Ji completed his education and mastered every area in just three years, rising above other disciples at the Ashram. At the completion of his education, with no worldly possessions to offer as Guru Dakshina, Swamiji brought a handful of cloves, with reverence and fondness, as the Dakshina to his Guru. As the time came for Swami Ji’s departure from the Ashram, the eyes of Guru Virjanand flowed like the overflow of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. Swami Ji was humbled by the sight of these tears. But then the Guru spoke. And, these words that the Guru said to Swami Ji, we will now repeat.
Guru Virjanand said, Listen, O Dayanand, as I open my heart and tell you what has brought me to tears. These days our India and our world are in a very pitiable state. The very foundations of our world have been shaken as people everywhere are crushed by the fierce grasp of hypocrisy and falsehood. Internal divisions of our people, society, and country have become an obstacle to our own progress. Society has become trapped in the prison of evil customs and practices. The so-called priests and protectors of culture have become predators and are more evil. The once pure Ocean of Dharma is now polluted by the presence of these lazy predators. The society is beaten down and worn out by the entrenched cunning rogues and snakes disguised as leaders. Devotion and worship are now hidden in their evil clutches. O Dayanand, the civilization of Aryas, the foundation of nobility and purity, is in the trap of sinners. Upon hearing these tearful words, Swami Ji became distraught.
Guru Virjanand continued. God is now being sold in the markets and shops. God is now a business commodity. A terrible change has taken over the morals of society as the cunning and wicked ones dress impeccably and take over every platform. The cheaters have duped everyone. No one is left untouched. The world is overcome with this sickness, and the winds of adversity and disaster are blowing everywhere. No one has challenged and treated it as yet. O Dayanand, you are the one. You can save this sad country and this sad world. The boat of life is trapped mid-river. You, please take the boat across. This is the wish of your Guru. Give your life to the upliftment of India and the world. Your very birthplace is in danger; go save it. Go, my son, change the map of India’s destiny! Swamiji fell to the feet of his Guru.
As per his Guru’s order, our Brahmacharee, our beloved Swami, started to uplift his country. He became a revolutionary and started a whirlwind tour across India. He awakened everyone who was sleeping as he visited villages and cities. Day and night, he traveled, inspiring and awakening others. As he traveled, he saw the degradation and the injustices. He saw that the temples were overcome by clay toys, the mediocre persons with evil intentions had taken over, maligned, and abused the places of devotion. He saw that persons of ill repute were taking over the position of righteousness and that people had started to accept and even enjoy the invasion of righteousness by sensuality and lecherous indulgence. The very structure of society has been shaken loose. Seeing all of this, the Rishi blew the trumpet of a total revolution.
Swamiji launched a reformation revolution. He came to the world with zest, and everyone started to take notice. He carried his Jhanda in one hand and a stick in the other. His mission was to make every Hindu into a scholar once again. He went to the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar and planted his flag and started waving the sword of logic and wisdom of the Vedas. He exposed the false practices and ripped apart the fake scriptures and religions. He sounded his call “Back to the Vedas” by showing everyone that all wisdom originates from the Vedas. He exposed the dishonesty and falsehood of other so-called holy books and showed that they failed simple logic, while the Vedas were complete and unrefutable.
Swami Ji continued his revolution. He exposed the greedy pandits who controlled mandirs and places of pilgrimage. He was physically attacked, but his immense physical strength overcame the thugs who attacked him. Swami Ji exposed the hypocrites who tarnished the honor of our ancestors. He exposed the corrupt priests and leaders. The temples had become shops of greed and avarice, and the Ravanas were sitting in the temples of Raam. Swamiji exposed them all. And in so doing, thousands started to follow him and became united under the Vedic flag. While many who were steeped in corruption and hypocrisy hated him and became jealous of his massive following, Swamiji marched onward to bring change to his country.
Swami Ji went to Kashi and lifted his voice against the rituals that had become the norm. Everyone was stunned by the straightforward truth that he shared. Swami Ji challenged them, “Where is idol worship in the Vedas?” he asked. That question troubled everyone as they started to absorb the truth Swami Ji was sharing. The so-called religious leaders started to create problems with their arrogance and attacks. But Swami Ji, with pure Vedic truth and Logic, sent them stampeding out. History records that the arrogant pandits and priests of Kashi were defeated that day. All around the country, the cheers and salutations of our Rishiraaj echoed and reverberated. Let us now remember some of the miracles of this great Maharishi.
In those days, men were the rulers of their household, and women were ill-treated and often viewed as doormats. This fearless Sage, Maharishi Dayanand, led his movement to free helpless women from oppression. He led the way so that women sat on the throne of Jagadamba. He brightened the lives of all women and spoke openly about equal education for women. He dealt with the pitiable plight of widows and allowed for remarriage. The Great Rishi gave a hard hit to the religious conversions that were forced on people. The priests and mullahs were exposed for fooling the people. Soon, the hypocrites and fraudsters became silent as they could not face the force of truth that Swami Ji brought to the world. At this time, the people of Mumbai started to call for Swamiji to go there.
Mumbai became the most fortunate city in the world because Rishi Ji laid the foundation of the Arya Samaj there. At that time, we were blessed with the Satyarth Prakash from Swami Ji. With the Satyarth Prakash, our minds could soar to new heights. The plight of the caste system and the treatment of the untouchable caste were fiercely dealt with by Swami Ji, and he caused respect to be brought to those who were deemed untouchables as he embraced all without fear or favor and opened the door to education for everyone. From Mumbai, Swamiji went to Punjab, and by this time, innumerable persons started to follow him wherever he went, accepting his teachings and accepting him as their Guru. Vedic discourse and satsang started in every home because of Swamiji. Those who opposed him were baffled at this magical man and the transformation he started.
In various parts of Punjab, in Rajputana and elsewhere, Swamiji held up the Vedas and preached their message. Countless followers attended his discourses, and the Vedas were now being chanted all over the country. All the walls of discrimination were being shattered as Swamiji removed the centuries-old garbage of ignorance. This great sage changed the fate of millions of people and reset the course that had been overtaken by ignorance for years. The king of Udaipur himself welcomed Swamiji and even offered the throne to Swamiji. But the great Sage politely refused the offer and went ahead with his reformation of the country. Jodhpur begged Swamiji to visit.
The head of Jodhpur was infamous for his wickedness and lechery. His female companion was flirtatious and provided ill repute to the king and kingdom. Many of Swamiji’s followers tried to dissuade Swamiji from going there. But Swamiji was fearless. Even while teaching the public, he made efforts to reform the king. One day, the kind fetched a palanquin on his own shoulders, carrying a woman of ill repute. Swamiji was very sad about this spectacle, and he asked the king, “O king, what are you doing? You, the son of a lion, are dying for a lustful, lowly animal?” The entire palace resounded with a roar upon hearing these words.
The king immediately realized his folly and apologized. However, the prostitute could not tolerate the insult and conspired against the sage. Like a monstrous serpent, she laid a poisonous trap. She showered wealth upon the Saint’s cook, who gave in to the lure of richness and became a criminal by his act. He secretly mixed poison in the Saint’s milk at night and also mixed ground glass into the milk. The unsuspecting Saint drank this deadly mixture and immediately knew something was wrong. He summoned the man and queried about it, and the man admitted his dastardly actions. That great sage, he of the most incredible mind, encouraged the man to flee to Nepal lest the followers catch up with him.
Numerous doctors came, but none could help against the deadly concoction. Everyone was worried. Swamiji was taken to another place by his devotees, but the doctors there could not help. By this time, Swamiji knew that his end was near. He said, “Lord, what a great game Thou hast played with me. My life is ending per Thy will. Thy will be done! My only request, O Lord, is that Thou take care of my children.” With the uttering of “Om” the great Rishi breathed his last breath. His only sound was “Om” as he left his body to the earth. This is how the great sages go.
O Aryans around the world, O noble souls around the world, listen to the message contained in our song. How can we fit the full glory of this Noble and Great sage into this container of a song? The extent of what Swamiji was and who he was cannot be told since we cannot fully represent his greatness in such a short time. Swamiji was a direct blessing from the Almighty Lord.
Swamiji was the most potent power of Raama’s armoury. Swamiji was a genius, a brilliant and awesome gift of God for the world. Swamiji was the voice, the lifeblood, the very breath and soul of Vedic Satya Sanatan Dharma.
