Vivaah Sanskaara – Part I

ओम् अग्निर्भूतानामधिपतिः स मावत्वस्मिन् ब्रह्मण्यस्मिन्
क्षत्रेऽस्यामाशिष्यस्यां पुरोधायामस्मिन् कर्मण्यस्यां देवहूत्याꣳ स्वाहा। 
इदमग्नये भूतानामधिपतये इदन्न मम॥

Om agnir-bhootaanaam-dhipatih sa maavatvasmin
brahmaṇy-asmin kshatre’syaama-ashiṣhya-syaam
purodhaayaam-asmin karmaṇy-asyaam devahootyaam svaahaa.¹
Idamagnaye bhootaanaam-adhipataye idanna mama

Agni is one of the foremost five essential elements of the world. Agni represents fire, heat, light, and energy. May we be blessed with all the positive aspects of Agni. May our intellectual and academic advancements be blessed. O Lord, I invoke your kindness and blessings at this time for our Yagya and those of us who perform this Yagya. This prayer is made so that the benefits Agni accrue to us. This is not for the ego.

Indra represents the power of our senses. Our five senses are preeminent and foremost in giving us satisfaction, but if uncontrolled, they can also create disharmony and ill health. May we be blessed to be in control of our senses. May our intellectual and academic advancements be blessed. O Lord, I invoke your kindness and blessings at this time for our Yagya and those of us who perform this Yagya. This prayer is made so that the benefits Agni accrue to us. This is not for the ego.

The Yamas (satya, asteya, brahmacharya, ahimsa, and aparigraha)⁴ provide the self-awareness for happiness in life on earth. May we be blessed to be aware of truth, honesty, self-control, non-violence, and contentment (freedom from greed). May our intellectual and academic advancements be blessed. O Lord, I invoke your kindness and blessings at this time for our Yagya and those of us who perform this Yagya. This prayer is made so that the benefits Agni accrue to us. This is not for the ego.

Om vaayur-antarikshasi-adhipatih sa maavatvasmin
brahmaṇy-asmin kshatre’syaama-ashiṣhya-syaam
purodhaayaam-asmin karmaṇy-asyaam devahootyaam svaahaa.⁵
Idam vaayave-antarikshasi-adhipataye idanna mama

The air and the atmosphere provide the essential air for life on Earth. May we be blessed with pure and clean air, and may our atmosphere be protected. May our intellectual and academic advancements be blessed. O Lord, I invoke your kindness and blessings at this time for our Yagya and those of us who perform this Yagya. This prayer is made so that the benefits that accrue with a pure atmosphere. This is not for the ego.

Idam sooryaaya divo-adhipataye idanna mama

The sun and the sunlight are essential to our life and to the earth. May we be blessed with clear and good sunlight, and may our days be protected. May our intellectual and academic advancements be blessed. O Lord, I invoke your kindness and blessings at this time for our Yagya and those of us who perform this Yagya. This prayer is made so that the benefits that accrue from sunlight. This is not for the ego.

Om chandramaa nakshatraaṇaam-adhipatih sa maavatvasmin
brahmaṇy-asmin kshatre’syaama-ashiṣhya-syaam
purodhaayaam-asmin karmaṇy-asyaam devahootyaam svaahaa.⁷
Idam chandramase nakshatraaṇaam-adhipataye idanna mama

The moon, stars, and planets are essential to our life and to the earth. May our solar system be protected. May our intellectual and academic advancements be blessed. O Lord, I invoke your kindness and blessings at this time for our Yagya and those of us who perform this Yagya. This prayer is made so that the benefits that accrue from the moon, the planets and stars. This is not for the ego.

Om brihaspatir-brahmaṇo-adhipatih sa maavatvasmin
brahmaṇy-asmin kshatre’syaama-ashiṣhya-syaam
purodhaayaam-asmin karmaṇy-asyaam devahootyaam svaahaa.⁸
Idam brihaspataye brahmaṇo-adhipataye idanna mama

The Grace of our Creator and the entire creation is important to our life and to the earth. May we continue to earn God’s favor. May our intellectual and academic advancements be blessed. Om varuṇo’paam-adhipatih sa maavatvasmin
brahmaṇy-asmin kshatre’syaama-ashiṣhya-syaam
purodhaayaam-asmin karmaṇy-asyaam devahootyaam svaahaa.¹⁰
Idam varuṇaayaa’paam-adhipataye idanna mama.

Om samudrah snotyaanaam-adhipatih sa maavatvasmin
brahmaṇy-asmin kshatre’syaama-ashiṣhya-syaam
purodhaayaam-asmin karmaṇy-asyaam devahootyaam svaahaa.¹¹
Idam samudraaya snotyaanaam-adhipataye idanna mama.

The vast space and all the space-time continuum is an essential part of all of creation. May we be blessed withan understanding of all these elements. Om soma oṣhadheena-adhipatih sa maavatvasmin
brahmaṇy-asmin kshatre’syaama-ashiṣhya-syaam
purodhaayaam-asmin karmaṇy-asyaam devahootyaam svaahaa.¹³
Idam somaaya-oṣhdheena-adhipataye idanna mama.

The animal kingdom is essential to nature and to life. May we live in harmony with the animals. May we be blessed with the ability to procreate. इदं त्वष्ट्रे रूपाणामधिपतये इदन्न मम॥

Om tvaṣhṭaa roopaaṇaam-adhipatih sa maavatvasmin
brahmaṇy-asmin kshatre’syaama-ashiṣhya-syaam
purodhaayaam-asmin karmaṇy-asyaam devahootyaam svaahaa.¹⁶
Idam tvaṣhṭe roopaaṇaam-adhipataye idanna mama.

The forms of radiation of various energies are essential to nature and to life. May we live in harmony with the animals. May we be blessed with the ability to procreate. My the medicinal plants be abundant to help us in life. May our intellectual and academic advancements be blessed. The cycle of nature from the clouds (the process of water cycle through clouds, mountains, forests, oceans and sun) is essential to nature and to life.
