PRADAKSHINA – 2nd Circumambulation
The groom holds the right hand of the bride and leads the bride around the vedi.
This is the second circumambulation, this time, four times with the groom leading. The matrimonial knot is made. See Note 7.1
The groom says:
ओं सरस्वति प्रेदमव सुभगे वाजिनीवति।
यां त्वा विश्वस्य भूतस्य प्रजायामस्याग्रतः।
यस्यां भूतꣳ समभवद्यस्यां विश्वमिदं जगत्।
तामद्य गाथां गास्यामि यास्त्रीणामुत्तमं यशः॥
Om sarasvati predamava subhage vaagineevati.
Yaam tvaa vishvasya bhootasya prajaayaam-asyaagratah.
Yasyaam bhootam samabhavad-yasyaam vishvamidam jagat.
Taamadya gaathaam gaasyaami yaa-streenam-uttamam yashah.2
O Bride, you are my Goddess, elegant, auspicious, and resourceful. May you be like the sun, always shining with love and victory over darkness. May you always be victorious; may you always be ahead of any challenges. May you, from today, always achieve excellence and overcome every challenge that the world poses to you. As we sing praise and glory to God, may we also sing your praise as my wife and mother to our children.
सरस्वति wisdom, God, प्र forward, towards, ahead, protect सुभगे dear, auspicious, elegant वाजिनीवति rich, resources, sun याम् त्वा you are विश्वस्य whole भूतस्य this creation प्रजायाम् bear, beget, victory अस्य this अग्रतः forward, in front of यस्याम् from you भूतम् world समभवत् existing यस्याम् in which विश्वम whole, everything इदम् this जगत् world ताम that अद्य today, now and here गाथाम् song, story गास्यामि sing या स्त्रीणम् wife, this lady उत्तमम् best, excellence, highest यशः fame, honor, glory
तुभ्यमग्रे पर्यवहन्त्सूर्यां वहतुना सह ।
पुन: पतिभ्यो जायां दा अग्ने प्रजया सह ॥
Om tubhyam-agne parya-vahant
sooryaam vaha-tunaa saha.
Punah pati-bhyo jaayaa
Daa agne prajayaa saha.3
O Bride, O Wife, God has blessed me with you in marriage. May we always be together in our journey of life. May we be blessed with children and may the Almighty God bless us from all sides.
तुभ्यम् to you अग्रे God, beginning, peak, top परि in every way, from, about अवहन् marry, transport, bring सूर्याम् luminous, like the sun वहतुना marriage सह together, with, jointly पुन: again पतिभ्यः husband, with husband जाया wife दा give, add अग्ने God प्रजया offspring, people सह together
ओं कन्यला पितृभ्यः पतिलोकं यतीयमप दीक्षामयष्ट।
कन्या उत त्वया वयं धारा उदन्या इवातिगाहेमहि द्विषः॥
Om kanyalaa pitribhyah patilokam
Yateeyam-apa-deekshaam-ayaṣhṭa.
Kanyaa utatva-yaa vayam dhaaraa
Udanyaa ivaati gaahe-mahi dviṣhah.4
My bride is giving up her parents’ home to live with me, her husband. May we be blessed with happiness as we start our new life together and as we create and set new rules for life. May our happiness, like ever-flowing streams of water, overcome any obstacles in its path.
कन्यला girl, unmarried girl पितृभ्यः parents home, from parents पतिलोकं husband’s domicile/home/surroundings यतीयमप go and enter दीक्षाम् rules at initiation, rules we start with अयष्ट accept with resoluteness कन्या girl उत now त्वया you वयम् we धारा continuous flow उदन्या irrigate, satisfy like water filling up इव like अतिगाह् deep महि earth द्विषः foe, hostile
Laajaa-Ahuti – Offering of parched grains
This is the last offering of parched grains
The bride offers parched grains into the fire:
ओं भागाया स्वाहा ॥
इदं भागाया इदन्न मम ॥
Om bhaagaaya svaahaa.
Idam bhaagaaya idanna mama.5
I make this oblation and pray for good fortune.
Prajaapatya-ahuti
Bride and Groom offer ghee into the fire:
ओं प्रजापतये स्वाहा ॥
इदं प्रजापतये इदन्न मम ॥
Om prajaapataye svaahaa.
Idam prajaapataye idanna mama.6
This oblation is being made while recognizing the Great Lord of the universe. We ask for your blessings O Lord.
Svishtakrit-ahuti
Oblation of Ghee and Grains
ओं यदस्य कर्मणोऽत्यरीरिचं यद्वा न्यूनमीहाकरम्।
अग्निष्टत् स्विष्टकृद् विद्यात् सर्वं स्विष्टं सुहुतं करोतु मे।
अग्नये स्विष्टकृते सहुतहुते सर्वप्रायश्चित्ताहुतीनां कामानां
समर्धयित्रे सर्वान्नः कामान्त्समर्द्धय स्वाहा।
इदमग्नये स्विष्टकृते इदन्न मम।
Om yadasya karmaṇo‘tya-ree-richam
yadvaa nyoonam-ihaa-karam.
Agniṣh-ṭat sviṣhṭa-kṛid vidyaat sarvam
sviṣhṭam suhutam karotu me.
Agnaye sviṣhṭa-kṛite suhuta-hute
sarva-praayash-chitta-ahuteenaam
kaamaanaam samar-dha-yitre
sarvaanah kaamaant-samardhayah svaahaa.
Idam-agnaye sviṣhṭa-kṛite, idanna mama.7
Vyaahriti-aahuti
ओं भूरग्नये स्वाहा।
इदं अग्नये इदन्न मम।
Om bhoor-agnaye svaahaa.
Idam agnaye, idanna mama.
ओं भुवर्वायवे स्वाहा।
इदं वायवे इदन्न मम।
Om bhuvar-vaayave svaahaa.
Idam vaayave, idanna mama.
ओं स्वरादित्याय स्वाहा।
इदमादित्याय इदन्न मम।
Om svar-aadityaaya svaahaa.
Idam-aadityaaya, idanna mama.
ओं भूर्भुवः स्वरगीवाय्वादित्येभ्यः स्वाहा।
इदमग्निवाय्वादित्येभ्यः इदन्न मम।
Om bhoor-bhuvah
svaragni-vaayvaaditye-bhyah svaahaa.
Idam-agni-vaayvaaditye-bhyah, idanna mama.8
Poorṇa-ahuti
Both the Acharya and the Initiate make these three final offerings
ओं सर्वं वै पूर्णं स्वाहा।
Om sarvam vai poorṇam svaahaa.9
- The Pradakshina creates a circle around the fire: The couple exchanges vows in the all encompassing circle (of life); The couple pays ‘homage’ to all the directions. May their presence in any direction be peaceful and protected by God; They are having the reflection of the fire from all sides. May they be protected at all times; Seven is a mystical number, they walk around the fire total of seven times; Traditionally, it is said that the wedding is seven circumambulations representing seven lifetimes of togetherness.
