Aasan Daan (Offering of seat)
The Bride’s parents usually host weddings. Thus, acting as the host, the bride offers the groom to be seated first. Alternatively, the father/parents of the Bride offers a seat to the Groom and the Bride:
The host (Bride or bride’s parents) says:
ओं विष्टरो विष्टरो विष्टरः प्रतिगृह्यताम्
Om viṣhṭaro viṣhṭaro viṣhṭarah prati-griyataam
Kindly accept this seat.
विष्टरो seat विष्टरो of seats विष्टरः a chair (seat with back rest) प्रतिगृह्यताम् accept, take
The groom:
ओं प्रतिगृह्णामि
Om prati-grihṇaami
I accept
The groom also says:
ओं वर्ष्मोऽस्मि समाननामुद्यतामिव सूर्यः।
इमं तमभितिष्ठामि यो मा कश्चाभिदासति॥
Om varṣho’smi samaana-naam-udyataam-iva sooryah.
Imam tamabhiṣhṭhaamo yo maa kashcha-abhidaasati.1
I am ready for this stage of life and have prepared for this auspicious moment. I stand before all your wise persons, like the majestic sun, rising to advance and progress through life. May no one disturb this ceremony.
वर्ष्मो superior, handsome, auspicious appearance अस्मि I समाननाम of same name उद्यत ready for इव like, as सूर्यः the majestic sun इमम् this तम अभितिष्टति advance towards, rise over यो मा कश्च whoever, whatever अभिदासति consider as enemy
The bride and Groom then sit facing East, with the bride on the RIGHT side of the groom.
