Tujhe sooraj kahoȯ yaa chandaa
Tujhe deep kahoȯ yaa taaraa
Meraa naam karegaa roshan
Jag mė meraa raaj dulaaraa
Mai kab se taras rahaa thaa
Mere aangan me koyee khele
Nanhee see hansee ke badle
Meree saree duniyaa le le
Tere sang jhool rahaa hai
Meree baaho me jag saaraa
Meraa naam karegaa…
Aaj unglee thamke teree
Tujhe mai chalnaa sikh laaoo
Kal haath pakaṛnaa meraa
Jab mai booṛha ho jaaoo
Too milaa to maine paayaa
Jeene kaa nayaa sahaaraa
Meraa naam karegaa…
Mere baad bhee is duniyaa mė
Zindaa meraa naam rahegaa
Jo bhee tujhko dekhegaa
Tujhe meraa laal kahegaa
Tere roop me mil jaayegaa
Mujhko jeevan do baara
Mera naam karega roshan
Jag me mera raj dulara
Tujhe suraj kahu ya chanda
Tujhe dip kahu ya tara
Mera naam karega roshan
Jag me mera raj dulara.
O child, are you of the sun, the moon, the lamp, or the star? In all ways you represent light. In you, my name will shine, my darling child.
Before you were born, my house was empty and my life seemed unfulfilled. Life was itself lacking and I was thirsty for some unknown sweetness. Then, you came along and all my strange feelings vanished. You brought cheer and joy to me.
For years I was fervently awaiting someone to play in my home and my courtyard. I was ready to relinquish all my joys for the beautiful presence of an innocent child. Now, having you with me, I seem to have the world in my hands when I rock you, I feel as though I am rocking the entire world.
My child, today, as a baby, I hold your finger and teach you to walk. I know that in my old age, when I will be unable to walk, you will be my walking stick, giving me assistance to walk. You are the support for my old age.
I am confident, my child, that after my death, through you my name will live on. Anyone seeing you will say, “There is ‘my’ loving child”. I shall continue to live in your body.
