Soorya Darshan
Looking at the sun: Acharya points to the direction of the sun and child glances towards the sun:
ओं देव सवितरेष ते ब्रह्मचारी तं गोपाय समामृत ॥
Om deva savitareṣha te brahmacharee tam gopaaya samaamrita.1
May you be like the sun that always gives its light – may you always impart wisdom. May you be guarded and protected by your wisdom, and may the knowledge you gain be like the eternal sunlight, the eternal wisdom, the absolute truth that can dispel any darkness.
देवसवितरेष this shining sun that gives light ते you ब्रह्मचारी celibate तं गोपाय preserve, guard, protect समामृत the same eternal, imperishable One
Both Acharya and the child return to the Yajyakunda.
With the following two mantras, the child walks around the Acharya and sits before him.
ओं युवा सुवासाः परिवीत आगात स उ श्रेयान् भवति जायमानः ॥
Om yuvaa suvaasaah pariveeta aagaat sa u
shreyaan bhavati jaayamaanah.2
This young initiate is well-adorned and ready for this stage of life, transforming his/her life into one of wisdom and fame. May our child be victorious in these endeavors.
युवा young, youthful सु good, beautiful वासस् clothes, dress, garment परिवीत encompassed by (the sacred thread), surrounding, all sides आगात come, arrive स this, he, she उ now, indeed श्रेयान् better, preferable भवति become, originate, transform जायमानः victorious, famous
ओं सूर्यस्यावृतमन्वावर्त्तस्व, असौ ॥
Om sooryasya-aavritam-anvaa-vartasva, asau.3
Like the sun that is always bright as the earth revolves around it, may this child reach for and attain brilliance from all sides.
सूर्य sun. brilliance अस्य this आवृत्त turned around, go around आवृत्त reach, be at hand अन्वावर्तते revolve around
Acharya touches child right shoulder:
ओं प्राणानां ग्रन्थिरसि मा विस्त्रसोऽन्तक इदं ते परिददामि, अमुम् ॥
Om praaṇaanaam granthirasi maa vistraso’ntaka idam te paridadaami, amum.4
May you be strong, your joints be resilient, and your shoulders be strong. May you not be affected by illness or death. We entrust this good wish to you, O precious child.
प्राणानां breathing, living ग्रन्थि joint of the body असि you, this person मा not विस्तृ spread, extend, divulge असो that अन्तक boundary, death, time of death इदम् this ते you परिददामि surrender, devotion, also – entrust to, grant अमुम् child, precious one
Touching the stomach area of the child
ओम् अहुर इदं ते परिददामि अमुम् ॥
Om ahur idam te paridadaami amum.5
May your digestive systems be healthy. We entrust this good wish to you, O precious child.
अहुर digestive systems इदम् this ते you परिददामि surrender, devotion, also – entrust to, grant अमुम् child, precious one
Acharya touches head of child:
ओं कृशन इदं ते परिददामि अमुम् ॥
Om krishan idam te paridadaami amum.6
Blessings for your thinking processes. We entrust this good wish to you, O precious child.
कृश head, home of the brain इदम् this ते you परिददामि surrender, devotion, also – entrust to, grant अमुम् child, precious one
Acharya touched right shoulder of child:
ओं प्रजापतये त्वा परिददामि असौ ॥
Om prajaapate tvaa paridadaami asau.7
May the Almighty Lord always be with you. We entrust this good wish to you, O precious child.
प्रजापतये creator, generative energy त्वा you परिददामि surrender, devotion, also – entrust to, grant असौ child
Acharya touched left shoulder of child:
ओं देवाय त्वा सवित्रे परिददामि, असौ ॥
Om devaaya tvaa savitre paridadaami asau.8
May the Divine grant you with wisdom.
देवाय Divine सवित्रे light, luminous, sacred thread त्वा you परिददामि surrender, devotion, also – entrust to, grant असौ child
Acharya gently rests his left hand on the child’s left shoulder and touches the heart region of the child with the right hand:
ओं तं धीरासः कवय उन्नयन्ति स्वाध्यो मनसा देवयन्तः ॥
Om tam dheeraasah kavaya unnayanti svaadhyo manasaa devayantah.9
May you always be resolute in your mental and physical growth and development. May your studies of the Vedas enlighten your journey of success.
तम् this धीरासः intelligent, steadfast, resolute कवय wise person, envision उन्नयन्ति uplift, rise स्वाध्यो studying the vedas, nicely, good मनसा mental powers देवयन्तः to reach godliness, way to God
