Upanayan Sanskaara

ओं मम व्रते ते हृदयं दधामि मम ित्तमनुचित्तते अस्तु
मम वाचमेकमना जुषस्व प्रजापतिष्ठव िुनक्तु मह्यम्

May our promises and vows be maintained as we undertake them intentionally, from the heart. May our emotions, thoughts, and words synchronize as we enter this honorable stage of life with the grace and blessings of the Almighty.

मम my व्रत vow, promise ते to you हृदयम् heart, of heart, with heart दधामि hold, support, cherish, nourish चित्तम् mind, thought अनु like, similarly ते you, your अस्तु be so वाचम् speech, word, promise एकम one, single जुषस्व enter, reason, choose प्रजापति God, Creator त्वम् you िुनक्तु put together, enjoin मह्यम् high honor

मम वाचमेकमना जुषस्व प्रजापतिष्ठव िुनक्तु मह्यम्

What is your name?

[असौ] अहम्भोः ।

अहम् I am भो Sir

कस्य ब्रह्मचार्यसि ?

To whom is your promise of celibacy made?

भवतः 

You, Sir

इन्द्रस्य ब्रह्मचार्यस्यग्िराार्तवाहमाार्यस्तव असौ॥

O initiate, you take the vows of disciplined study of the Vedas – in the name of God, the Almighty Lord. And, in the name of the Almighty One, oversee this initiation into brahmacharya. 

इन्द्र Mighty, Ruler, King, first, excellent, pupil of the eye अस्य of this ब्रह्मचार् study of Vedas, celibate, disciplined study, celibate अग्नि God, luminous, energy, Almighty अचार् acharya तव yours अहम I, mine, yours अचार् acharya असौ that

ओं कस्य ब्रह्मचार्यसि प्राणस्य ब्रह्मचार्यसि कस्त्वा कमुपनयते का त्वा परिददामि ॥

You have freely expressed your desire to study the Vedas. May your breath and your very life be blessed to allow you to focus on your goals as you surrender to this vital stage of life.

कस्य whose, for what ब्रह्मचार् study of vedas, celibate प्राण vital breath अस्य of this ब्रह्मचार् study of vedas, celibate अस्य of this क who, what त्वा who, what कमुपनयते spoken desire, spoke wish का natural temperament, principal, habitation त्वा you, your परिददामि surrender, devotion, also – entrust to, grant 

ओं प्रजापतये त्वा परिददामि । 
देवाय त्वा सवित्रे परिददामि। 
अद्भ्यस्त्वौषधीभ्ः परिददामि । 
द्ावापृथिवीभ्यां त्वा परिददामि। 
विश्वेभ्यस्त्वा देवेभ्ः परिददामि । 
सर्वेभ्यस्त्वा भूतेभ्ः परिददाम्यरिष्ट्ै ॥

May the Almighty God always protect you. May the Divine truth be with you always. May you remain free of any illness. May all around you be blessed. May you always be in the company of wise persons. May everyone around you be blessed as well, and May God always keep you safe and healthy.

प्रजापतये God, King, Protector त्वा you परिददामि bestow देवाय divine, godly, of God त्वा you सवित्रे immanent principle, omniscient अद्भ्यस् pure, irreproachable, without fault ओषधीभ्ः medicines that remove any afflictions द्ावापृथिवीभ्यां heaven and earth विश्वेभ्यो all, complete, totally, all-pervading देवेभ्ः all-wise, wise ones सर्वेभ्यस् from all, of all, for all भूतेभ्ः remover of all afflictions, Lord of all

ओं त्वं जीव शरदः शतं वर्धमानः। 

आयुष्मा् तेजस्वी वर्चस्वी भूाः ॥

Aayuṣhmaan tejasvee varchasvee bhooyaah.

May you live a long, healthy, and prosperous life. May you be prosperous, accomplished, noble, energetic, and even more for your entire life.

त्वम् you जीव life, live शरदः years शतं hundred वर्धमानः growing, thriving, prosperous आयुष्मा् life, long life तेजस्वी brilliant, bright, noble, inspiring वर्चस्वी energetic, healthy, active भूाः again, moreover, furthermore

॥ इत्ुपनयनसं्कारविधिः समाप्तः ॥
