Sindoor daan 1
With this verse, the groom places his hand on the Bride’s forehead to declare to the world.
I call the attention of everyone as I declare:
This beautiful bride is my wife and partner. We have vowed to share our lives together.
This mark of Sindoor is a mark of love that she proudly wears on her forehead.
I hereby request that everyone treat her with the love and respect you would treat me.
सुमङ्गलीरियं वधूरिमां समेत पश्यत । सौभाग्यमस्यै दत्त्वायाथास्तं विपरेतन ॥
Sumangaleeriyam vadhoorimaam sameta pashyat.
Saubhaagyamasyai dattvaaya-athaastam viparetan.
This bride will bring auspiciousness to our home. May all relatives and well-wishers bless this beautiful bride. Be blessed with good fortune and prosperity, and may everyone always treat you with kindness, respect, and affection.
(Gaaye jaa geet Milan ke)
You are my beautiful darling;
our Divine Lord’s blessing
Together we will live happily
We will live and love, I will give so much
My love for you will always be.
We are together, will be forever
This life’s companion we will be.
You are my beautiful darling;
our Divine Lord’s blessing
Together we will live happily
Ashirvaad (Blessings)
Everyone looks toward the couple and says
ओं सौभाग्यमस्तु। ओं शुभं भवतु ॥
Om sau-bhaagyam-astu
Om shubham bhavatu.
Our blessing unto you. May great fortune be yours; may everything be auspicious.
NOTE: The complete sanskaara actually continues with Further oblations; Sighting of the stars; Sighting of the pole star; Sighting of the arundhati star; First meal together; Welcome to new home.
Conclusion
As everyone stood up to welcome bride and groom, all rise to allow the couple to depart from the Vedi.
- Sindoor is a traditional aspect of vivaah. The wearing of sindoor has become a mark of a married woman. In the Sanskaara itself, the groom places his hand lightly on the forehead of the bride as he makes a public declaration. However, at this juncture, the traditional sindoor can also be applied.
