पाणिग्रहण – Paanigrahan
The groom stands facing the bride and holds the Bride’s right hand in his (like a handshake) in this exchange of vows:
Vows of the Groom
O Beautiful bride: I hold your hand for prosperity, good fortune, and noble children. I hereby take the following vows:
1 – I recognize and honor God. May He always be present in our home and our lives.
2 – You are my equal partner, and I will do everything possible to make us happy together.
3 – I will always communicate openly with you and will never hide anything from you.
4 – I will always be loving and respectful, both privately and publicly, and will never bring dishonor to us.
5 – I will support your role as the Mother of our children.
6 – I will always protect you and will keep us happy together.
7 – O beautiful bride, God has brought us together; let no person or force take us apart.
Vows of the Bride
O handsome partner! Before God and man, I take my vows:
1 – I hold your hand as my partner in life, accepting you as my husband
2 – I will always love and respect you, privately and publicly.
3 – I will never conceal anything from you.
4 – I will walk beside you as your best friend and partner and do all I can to make you happy.
5 – I will be faithful to you and our family
6 – I pledge to keep our family together and raise good children who will make us proud.
7 – I will be your partner and walk alongside you for the rest of our lives.
The sanskrit verses that captures the vows above are:
ओं गृभ्णामि ते सौभगत्वाय हस्तं मया पत्या जरदष्टिर्यथासः।
भागो अर्यमा सविता पुरन्धिर्मह्यं त्वादुर्गार्हपत्याय देवाः ॥1
Om gribh-ṇaami te sow-bhagat-vaaya hastam
mayaa patyaa jaradaṡh-ṭiryathaasah.
Bhago aryamaa savitaa purandhir-mahayam
tvaa-durgaarha-patyaaya devaah.
We seek the blessing of God, the Creator. Let all those assembled bless us for a happy married life. I hold your hand for prosperity, good fortune, and good children. May we live to old age together. Henceforth, we are together, dependent on each other, and shall never disrespect the other.
ओं भगस्ते हस्तमग्रभीत् सविता हस्तमग्रभीत्।
पत्नी त्वमसि धर्मणाहं गृहपतिस्त्व॥ 2
Om bhagaste hastam-agrabheet
savitaa hastam-agrabheet.
Patnee tvamasi dharmaṇaham grihapatistva.
I hold your hand and am inspired to righteousness. I, your husband, accept you as my wife. Together we shall accomplish our duties without any misconduct. May our home be happy and prosperous. May we have noble children.
ममेयमस्तु पोषया मह्यंत्वदाद् बृहस्पतिः।
मया पत्या प्रजावति शं जीव शरदः शतम् ॥3
Mameyam-astu poṡhyaa
mahyam-tvaadaad brihaspatih.
Mayaa patyaa prajaavati
sham jeeva sharadah shatam.
God brought us together. God has blessed me with your presence in my life. Let us remain together for the rest of our lives as you and I accept each other for our life partner.
त्वष्टा वासो व्यदधच्छुभेकं बृहस्पतेः प्रशिषा कविनाम् ।
तेनेमां नारीं सविता भगश्च सूर्यामिव परिधत्तां प्रजया ॥4
Tvaṡhṭaa vaaso vyadadhaach-chhubhekam
brihaspateh prashiṡhaa kaveenaam.
Tenemaam naareem savitaa bhagashcha
sooryaamiva pari-dhattaam prajayaa.
The relationship between husband and wife is a special bond that lasts a lifetime. This life of togetherness becomes a blessed partnership in the service of God. May my joys be unbound in providing you with all I can, and may we both find happiness in looking out for each other. May God’s blessing enable you always to be well-adorned and happy. We bow to the Creator and Preserver in our request for a prosperous, happy, and healthy family
इन्द्राग्नि द्यावापृथिवी मातरिश्वा मित्रावरुणा भागो अश्विनोभा।
बृहस्पतिर्मरुतो ब्रह्म सोम इमां नारी प्रजया वर्धयन्तु ॥ 5
Indraagnee dyaavaaprithivee maatarishvaa
mitraavruṇaa bhago ashvinobhaa.
Brihaspatir-maruto brahma soma
imaam naarem prajayaa vardhayantu.
Just as the forces of nature benefit the world, may the world benefit your well-being. May our God bless us always; may the noble persons be caring and impartial. O Bride, may you always be blessed by everyone around you.
अहं विष्यामि मयि रूपमस्या वेददितपश्यन्मनसा कुलायम्।
न स्तेयमद्मि मनसोदमुच्ये स्वयं श्रथ्नानो वरुणस्य पाषान् ॥ 6
Aham viṣhyaami mayi roopamasyaa
vedadit-pashyan-mansaa kulaayam.
Na steyamadmi manaso-damuchye
svayam shrith-naano varuṇasya paashaan.
I am fascinated with your beauty; please always recognize my love and affection for you. My mind is focused on our togetherness now and in the future. I vow to never hide anything from you, not to consume anything stealthily – and I ask that you do likewise.
