Ashṭaagya-ahuti: Eight special oblations
ओं त्वन्नो अग्ने वरुणस्य विद्वान् देवस्य हेळोऽवयासिसीष्ठाः।
यजिष्ठो वह्नितमः शोशुचानो विश्वा द्वेषांसि प्र मुमुग्ध्यसमत् स्वाहा।
इदमग्नीवरुणाभ्याम् इदन्न मम।
Om tvanno agne varuṇasya vidvaan
devasya hedo vayaa-si-sheeṣh-ṭhaah
yajiṣhṭho vah-ni-tamah sho-shu-chaan-no
vishvaa dveṣhaansi
pra mumug-dhyas-mat svaahaa.
Idam-agni-varuṇaa-bhyaam, idanna mama.1
Tvamno agni You are our All-knowing One, our varunasya Giver of Honor and the vidvaan knowledge of those devasya wise persons from whom all hedah avayaasiseeshtha disrespect and dishonour are kept away. Yajishto vahanitam Bless this performer with honor and shochushaano excellence and intelligence; may vishva all dveshaansi negative and harmful thoughts pramumugdhasmat be driven far away (from me). idam this is agnivarunabhyaam for the all-knowing, all-pervading One, idanna mama it is not for the self.
त्वन्नो you are to us अग्ने all-knowing, self-effulgent, energy particle वरुणस्य honourable, vast विद्वान् complete encompassing knowledge देवस्य God, of God हेडः from dishonouring/disrespect अवयासिसीष्ठाः keep far away यजिष्ठः most honourable वह्नितमः best among carriers /performers शोशुचानः excellence, effulgence, shining world, all, (all of everything – entire world) negative thoughts, inimical feelings प्रमुमुग्ध drive away अस्मत् from us स्वाहा adoration, homage इदम् this अग्निवरुणाभ्याम् for all-knowing one and the pervading force इदम् this नः not मम mine, my
ओं स त्वन्नो अग्नेऽवमो भवोती नेदिष्ठो अस्या उषसो व्युष्टौ।
अव यक्ष्व नो वरुणं रराणो वीहि मृडीकं सुहवो न एधि स्वाहा।
इदमग्नीवरुणाभ्याम् इदन्न मम।
Om sa tvanno agne-‘vamo bhavotee
nediṣhṭho asyaa oṣhaso vyuṣhṭau.
Ava yakshva no varuṇam raraaṇo
veehi mṛideekam suhavo no edhi svaahaa.
Idam-agni-varuṇaa-bhyaam, idanna mama.2
Homage sa tvam no to you, agni avamo bhavotee the radient One who protects us and nedishtho asya is always alluringly near to us just like the ushaso-vyushthau day is always close to the dawn. avayakva no Bless us with the company of varunam enlightened persons. Raraanah veehi please accept our offering and bestow mrideekam prosperity and suhavo nah edhi your ever-growing Grace unto us all. idam this is agnivarunabhyaam for the all-knowing, all-pervading One, idanna mama it is not for the self.
स that त्वन्नो you are to us अग्नेऽवमो अग्ने radiant, all-knowing अवमः protector भव be ऊटी with protection (protected) नेदिष्ठ nearest अस्या of this उषसो उषसः dawn व्युष्टौ in the light, in focus; when dawn becomes day अव influence (example, of good company) यक्ष्व influence (example, of good company) नो to us वरुणम् enlightented रराणः bestowing वीहि accept/provide मृडीकं satisfactory offering, prosperity सुहवः grace, reverence न not, no (negative prefix) एधि be; increase/grow (Strong) स्वाहा adoration, homage इदम् this अग्निवरुणाभ्याम् for all-knowing one and the pervading force इदम् this नः not मम mine, my
ओम् इमं मे वरुण श्रुधी हवमद्या च मृडय।
त्वामवस्युराचके स्वाहा।
इदं वरुणाय इदन्न मम।
Om imam me varuṇa shrudhee
havam-adyaa cha mṛidaya.
Tvaam-avasyur-aachake svaahaa.
Idam varuṇaaya, idanna mama.3
Imam me varun O God, shruddhi please heed my havaam adyaa prayer at this time mridaya free me from sorrow and misery as tvaam avasyah aachake I invoke your protection, O Lord. This offering is for the varuna all-pervading One, not for the self.
इमं this मे my वरुण Revered one, God श्रुधी listen, heed, hear हवम् prayer अद्या today, now च and मृडय make happy, free from sorrow त्वाम् you अवस्युः wishing protection आचके invoke स्वाहा adoration, homage इदम् this वरुणाय God , the all-pervading One इदम् this नः not मम mine, my
ओं तत्त्वा यामि ब्रह्मणा
वन्दमानस्तदाशास्ते
यजमानो हविर्भिः।
अहेडमानो वरुणेह
बोध्युरुशंस मा न
आयुः प्रमोषीः स्वाहा।
इदं वरुणाय इदन्न मम।
Om tat-tvaa yaami brahmaṇaa
van-dam-aanas tadaa-shaaste
yajamaano havirbhih.
Aheda-maano varuṇeha
bodh-yuru-shansa maa na
aayuh pramoṣheeh svaahaa.
Idam varuṇaaya, idanna mama.4
Tatvaa yaami May I achieve your Grace through brahmana the (study of) the vedic texts and vandamaanah adoring worship. Tadaashaasate that expectation yajamaanah of this performer of yajya havirbhih with humble offerings (of prayer) ahed-maano varuneha bodh-yurushansa maana aayuh pramoshi May there be ahedamaanah no neglect in my bodhi realisation of varuna God, aayuh pramoshi svaahaa let my life be (not wasted) meaningful. This offering is for the varuna all-pervading One, not for the self.
तत् that त्वा you यामि may I achieve ब्रह्मणा vedic texts बन्दमानः adoring, worship तत् that आशास्ते expectation यजमानः performer of yajya हविर्भिः with offerings अहेडमानाः not neglecting वरुण reverable, God इह here बोधि realise अरुशम् renowned मा न do not आयुः life, long life, preside over my long life प्रमोषीः wasted, unused, not fully used स्वाहा adoration, homage इदम् this वरुणाय God , the all-pervading One इदम् this नः not मम mine, my
ओं ये ते शतं वरुण ये सहस्रं
यज्ञियाः पाशा वितता महान्तः।
तेभिर्नो अद्य सवितोत विष्णुर्विश्वे
मुञ्चन्तु मरुतः स्वर्काः स्वाहा।
इदं वरुणाय सवित्रे विष्णवे विश्वेभ्यो
देवेभ्यो मरुद्भ्यः स्वर्केभ्यः इदन्न मम।
Om ye te shatam varuṇa ye sahastram
yajiyaah paashaa vitataa mahaantah.
Tebhirno adya savitota viṣhṇur-vishve
muṅchantu marutah svar-kaah svaahaa.
Idam varuṇaaya savitre
viṣhṇave vishve-bhyo devebhyo
marud-bhyah svarke-bhyah,
idanna mama.5
Homage to ye te shatam varun ye sahastram the infinite God whose presence in our lifetime and for eternity and whose paashaa laws and logic are vitataa spread across mahaantah His immeasurable vast yajiyaah creation. Tebhir no with those (laws) adya savita the Creator continuously vishnu preserves the vishve entire world munchantu marutah svarkaah and blesses the wise persons while removing all negative forces from us. This offering is made so that the varunaaya All-encompassing savitre Creator vishnave Preserver will marudbhyah inspire and illuminate svarkebhyah all the righteous, renowned persons. This is not for the self.
ये the one who ते your, you शतम् hundred – The 100 years denotes more than just the number, it represents fullness in life time वरुण Revered one, God ये who सहस्रम् thousands, immeasurable यज्ञियाः through yagya; also creation पाशा laws, regulations वितता spread/diffuse; also logic महान्तः big, great तेभिः from them नः to us अद्य today, now, at present time सविता creator उत and विष्णु omnipresent विश्व all मुञ्चन्तु may relieve/remove मरुतः air, wind, vital air स्वर्काः renowned, sages, seers स्वाहा adoration, homage इदम् this वरुणाय God , the all-pervading One सविता god, creator विष्णवे The All-encompassing One विश्वेभ्यो all pervading देवेभ्यो the illuminated wisdom मरुद्भ्यः inspire and illuminate स्वर्केभ्यः all the righteous, renowned persons इदम् this नः not मम mine, my
ओं अयाश्चाग्नेस्यनभिशस्तिपाश्च
सत्यमित्त्वमयासि।
अया नो यज्ञं वहास्याया नो
धेहि भेषजं स्वाहा।
इदमग्नये अयसे इदन्न मम।
Om ayaash-chaagne-
‘syanabhi-shasti-paashcha
satyam-ittwam-ayaasi.
Ayaa no yajyam vahaas-ya-yaa no
dhehi bheṣha-jam svaahaa.
Idam agnaye ayase, idanna mama.6
Homage to the ayaa Omnipresent agni power of the universe, the anabhishastipaah protector of the innocent (sinless, humble) for the satyam accurate and yagyam vahasi successful completion of this yagya. aya no dhehi bheshajam O Omnipresent God, bless us with strength and healing. This offering is for agaye ayase the omnipresent healing force and not for the self.
अयाः Omnipresent च and अग्नि Effulgent, Radient असी are अनभिशस्तिपः protector of the innocent सत्यम् truth तवम् you अयाः omnipresent नो us, for us यज्ञम् the yajya, act of selfless sacrifice performer of yajya वहांसि take to successful completion अया omnipresent नो us धेहि give, provide भेषजम् strength, remedial force, healing स्वाहा adoration, homage इदम् this इदमग्नये this fire procedure/process अयसे towards making efforts इदम् this नः not मम mine, my
ओम् उदुत्तमं वरुण पाशमस्मदवाधमं
वि मध्यमं श्रथाय।
अथा वयमादित्य व्रते तवानागसो
आदितये स्याम स्वाहा।
इदं वरुणायाऽदित्यायाऽदित्ये च इदन्न मम।
Om udut-tamam varuṇa
paasham-asmad-avaa-dhamam
vi madhyamam shrathaaya.
Athaa vayam-aaditya vrate
tavaa-naagaso aaditaye syaama svaahaa.
Idam varuṇaaya-aadityaaya-aditye cha, idanna mama.7
Homage to Varuna the Revered God. Please protect us by shrathaaya demolishing paashaam any dangers whether they come from udutamam above and even the highest points above us or avaadhamam below and the lowest places below – or even from vimadhamam in-between (the middle). Athaa vayamaditya O Eternal Omnipresent Lord we vrate tavaanaagaso promise to desist from sins, please aditaye syaama keep us free from bondage. This offering is for the homage of varunaaya-aadityaaya the eternal omnipresent Lord, not for the ego.
उत loosen from atop उत्तमम् highest, top, peak वरुण Revered one, God पाशम् bondage अस्मत् from us अव loosen from below अधमम् lowest point वि from mid-point मध्यमम् at the middle श्रथाय eradicate, demolish अथा Omnipresent वयं we आदित्य eternal व्रते in discipline, vow, promise तव your अनागसः sinless आदितये freedom from bondage स्याम may we be स्वाहा adoration, homage इदम् this वरुणा Omnipresent, revered One आदिते sun आदित्य eternal च and इदम् this नः not मम mine, my
ओं भवतं नः
समनसौ सचेतसावरेपसौ।
मा यज्ञं हिमंशिष्टं
मा यज्ञपतिं जातवेदसौ
शिवौ भवतमद्य नः स्वाहा।
इदं जातवेदोभ्याम् इदन्न मम।
Om bhavatan nah samana-sou
sacheta-saa-vare-pasau.
Maa yajyam him-siṣhṭam
maa yajya-patim jaata-vedasau
shivau bhavatam-adya nah svaahaa.
Idam jaata-vedo-bhyaam, idanna mama.8
Bhavatam-nah may we all be samanasau in accord and like-minded, may we achieve sachetasaa identical wisdom and become arepasau sinless. Bless our yajyam selfless sacrifices and bless the yajyapatim performer of these selfless sacrifices so that they are himshishtam not hindered from becoming jaatavedasau scholarly and wise, Grant us your shivau bhavatamadya nah benevolence/blessings at this time O Lord. This offering is made for the purpose of becoming jaatavedasau wise and scholarly and is not for the ego.
