Shaanti-karanam1Prayers for Peace and Harmony

शं इन्द्राग्नी भवतामवोभिः शं इन्द्रावरुणा रातहव्या
शमिन्द्रासोमा सुविताय शंयोः शं इन्द्रापूषणा वाजसातौ

Shan na indra-agni bhavataam-avobhih
shan na indraa-varuṇaa raat-havyaa.
Sham-indraa-somaa suvitaaya shanyoh
shan na indraa-pooṣhaṇaa vaaja-saatau.2

May the sham indraagni3 excellent and pure energy and electricity bhavataam be always avobhih protected and assured. May the necessary indraa varunaa pure waters be always raatahavya in full supply. May the sham relief-giving indra somaa purified medicines suvitaaya shanyoh provide for our peace and well-being, and may the sham vital indraa pooshanaa pure and excellent air assure our vaajasaatau crops and wealth.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us इन्द्राग्नी powerful energy, powerful electricity, powerful God भवताम् be, become, originate, transform अवःभिः favor, protection इन्द्रावरुणा powerful water-cycle, powerful forces of nature रातहव्या receiver of offerings, receiver of oblations, offering, in full supply इन्द्रमा powerful medicines सुविताय prosperity, well-being इन्द्रापूषणा excellent and pure air वाजसातौ crops and wealth

शं नो भगः शमु नः शंसो अस्तु शं नः पुरन्धिः शमु सन्तु रायः
शं नः सत्यस्य सुयमस्य शंशं नो अर्यमा पुरुजातो अस्तु

Shan no bhagah shamu nah shanso astu
shan nah purandhih shamu santu raayah.
Shan nah satyasya suyam-asya shansah
shan no aryamaa purujaato astu.4

May shan no we be blessed with bhagah prosperity (through a healthy environment), purandhih elevated intellect, satyasya truth and ethics, raayah riches and wealth all be based on suyamasya good intentions and good habits. may our aryamaa laws, enforcers and judges be impartial and of good reputation for their wisdom. May all these blessings elevate our life and our spirituality.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us भगः good fortune, well-being, excellence, healthy environment ऊँ you, now, indeed शंः praise, recitation अस्तु may be so, so be it पुरम्धिः sky, inspired intellect, blessed (guided) thinking सन्तु may all be; with purpose, be of purpose रायः wealth, possession सत्यस्य truth, ethics सुयमस्य based on noble intentions अर्यमा judicial, based on law, one who is entrusted with discernment, judge पुरुजातः renown, fame

शं नो धाता शमु धर्ता नो अस्तु शं उरूची भवतु स्वधाभिः
शं रोदसी बृहती शं नो अद्रिः शं नो देवानां सुहवानि सन्तु

Shan no dhaataa shamu dhartaa no astu
shan no uroochee bhavatu svadhaa-bhih.
Shan rodasee brihatee shan no adrih
shan no devaanaam suhavaani santu.5

God is the dhaataa Supporter and Nourisher, He dhartaa sustains everything sham nah for our benefit, thus the uruchee earth astu gets filled with svadaabhih nourishment and necessities (to support life) as is the rodasee atmosphere and the brihatee adrih vast clouds. And, the devaanaam learned ones constantly engage in suhavaani santu beautiful and positive thoughts.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us धाता one who beholds everything शम् ऊँ you, now, indeed धर्ता one who sustains अस्तु may be so, so be it उरूची earth भवतु be, become very well स्वधाभिः with all necessities for life (with food/nourishment); also free-will रोदसी the encompassing earth plus atmosphere plus space around and within, light and space बृहती great, vast, immeasurable span अद्रिः cloud देवानां of the learned ones सुहवानि beautiful sounds, prayerful hymns, invocation सन्तु be, may all be; with purpose

शं नो अग्निर्ज्योतिरनीको अस्तु शं नो मित्रावरुणावश्विना शम्
शं नः सुकृतां सुकृतानि सन्तु शं इषिरो अभिवातु वातः

Shan no agnir-jyotir-aneeko astu
shan no mitraa-varuṇaa-vashvinaa sham.
Shan nah sukṛitaam sukṛitaani santu
shan na iṣhiro abhi-vaatu vaatah.6

The astu existence of agni purposeful energy and jyotiranika spectrum of light is for our purpose. The mitraavaruna7 alliance between the waters and the ashvinaa sun, moon and other celestial bodies are for our benefit. The sukritaam benevolence of sukritaani good conduct santu is sham nah for our benefit. The vaatah weather undergoes ishirah constant change and abhivaatu effect sham nah for our benefit.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us अग्निः Supreme, energy, fire, heat, combustion, power ज्योतिः light अनीकः luminous, army अस्तु may be so, so be it मित्रावरुणौ in-breath and out-breath; friendly/beneficial air; beneficial waters अश्विा sun, moon, celestial bodies (eg how the moon regulates tide) सुकृताम् quite beautiful, very transformative सुकृतानि virtuous, with merit, auspiciousness सन्तु be, may all be; with purpose इषिरः quickly, constantly changing अभि वातु वातः flow towards, flowing

शं नो द्यावापृथिवी पूर्वहूतौ शमन्तरिक्षं दृशये नो अस्तु
शं ओषधीर्वनिनो भवन्तु शं नो रजसस्पतिरस्तु जिष्णुः

Shan no dyaavaa-prithivee poorva-hootau
sham-antariksham dṛishaye no astu.
Shan na oṣhadheer-vanino bhavantu
shan no rajasas-patir-astu jiṣhṇuh.8

O rajasaspatih, Master of the infinitesimal particles of the world astu jushnuh you are acclaimed all over as our benefactor. Bless us so that poorva hootau most importantly, may dyaavaa prithivee earth and the entire solar system, the antariksham atmosphere and space all, drishaye with clarity, sham nah astu bring us peace and prosperity. May the oshadheeh vaninah bounteous medicinal plants be beneficial to us.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us द्यावापृथिवी heaven and earth, the space and earth, solar system पूर्वहूतौ invocation, in praise of the controller of past and present अन्तरिक्षम् atmosphere, sky, space, rainwater दृशये see, view, observe clearly अस्तु may be so, so be it ओषधीः medicinal plants वनिनः forest of trees भवन्तु may be रजसस्पतिः lord of planetary systems रजसः dust, powder, kind of plant, emotion पतिः master जिष्णुः victorious, vanquishing

शं इन्द्रो वसुभिर्देवो अस्तु शमादित्येभिर्वरुणः सुशंसः
शं नो रुद्रो रुद्रेभिर्जलाषः शं नास्त्वष्टा ग्नाभिरिह शृणोतु

Shan na indro vasubhir-devo astu
sham-aaditye-bhir-varuṇah sushansah.
Shan no rudro rudre-bhir-jalaaṣhah
shan naas-tvaṣhṭaa gnaa-bhir-iha shriṇotu.9

May indra the sun, with its vasubhih life-giving attributes, bring us comfort. May the sushamsah excellent process in the aadityebhih influence of the sun of the seasons and varunah waters/oceans be beneficial to us. May rudra the life-giving God, rudrebhih in his assessment and judgment, bring us benevolence. May the tvashtaa Creator gnaabhih iha shrinotu listen to us (our worship) for our bliss.

शम् fortune, well-being, necessary, essential नः us इन्द्रः sun and atmosphere, God, वसुभिः live-giving attributes, देवः virtuous, splendorous, heavenly अस्तु be, may be so, so be it आदित्ेभिः having studied, seasons influenced by the sun वरुणः water, oceans सुशंसः praiseworthy, blessing, beautiful, good रुद्रः God of consequences, judge of the sinners रुद्रेभिः assessment or judgment of Rudra/God जलाषः healer, healing, cooling, curative त्वष्टा creative power ग्नाभिः through speech, voices, calls, (prayers) इह here, now, in the world

शं नः सोमो भवतु ब्रह्म शं नः शं नो ग्रावाणः शमु सन्तु यज्ञाः
शं नः सवरूणां मितयो भवन्तु शं प्रसवः शम्वस्तु वेदिः

Shan nah somo bhavatu brahma shan nah
shan no graavaaṇah shamu santu yajyaah.
Shan nah svarooṇaam mitayo bhavantu
shan nah prasavah sham-vastu vedih.10

May the tides, as regulated by the moon and the rains clouds, be beneficial for the creation of our wealth and luxury, may our havan and worship, as well as the homes/temples that sustain our worship, be blessed be respected and may the medicinal offerings at our havan and agnihotra bring us health and prosperity.

Meaning11

जैपुत्रको पाठ पढ़ाकर पिता प्रवीण बनाता है।
वैजगत-जनियता जनको ज्ञान-ज्योति दिखलाता है॥
ईश्वरकी अर्में अनुदि जो अनुराग बढ़ाते हैं।
वैभव, , सत्यसे ृष्टिका वह ाज सजाते हैं ॥

Jaise putra-ko paath parhaakar pitaa praveen banaataa hai.
Vaise jagat janyataa janko jyaan jyoti dikhlaataa hai.
Eeshvar-ki archaame anudin jo anuraag barhaate hai.
Vai-bhav, nyaaya, satyase srishtee-kaa vah saaj sajaate hai.

O Lord, the Source of all knowledge, we pray Thee to enlighten us with true knowledge so that we may have a ready access to Thee, as a son has to his father and as a disciple has to his preceptor. May we cooperate with one another and remain united for the attainment of bliss and true happiness
And, O Lord, May our prosperity, prayer and wishes, elevated intellect and riches, be auspicious to us. May our truthful speech based on the noblest intentions bring us welfare. May those that are entrusted with the task of dispensing justice be men of wide knowledge and prove auspicious to us.
