ऋत्विग्वरणम् – Ritvigvaranam

Inviting the Priest to lead the Yajya:1

The host says:

ओमावसोः सदने सीद

Om-aa-vasoh sadane seeda2

O Lord, I humbly bow to you and invoke your Grace for the successful completion of this Yajya. I now request my priest to conduct this yajya.

The priest replies:

सीदामि।

Om see-daa-mi.

By the Grace of God, I accept this noble duty.

The host says:

अहमद्ोक्तकर्मकरणा भवन्तं वृणे।

Aham-adya-ukta-karma3 karaṇaaya bhavantam vriṇe.

At this specially selected time and place, I desire to conduct this Yajya. O lord provide us with your blessings for this Yajya. O Priest, I also select and accept you for this noble task. Kindly perform this action for us.

The priest says:

वृतोऽस्मि।

Vṛito-‘smi.

By the Grace of God, I accept this noble duty.

  1. A priest can lead us into prayer; in such cases, this formal appointment is made. However, Havan is a daily duty for everyone.
  2. Gobhil Grihyasutra 1.6.5
  3. In the place of karma, the type of yajya to be performed can be mentioned.
