The glorification of, Prayers to, and Communion with God1

विश्वानि देव सवितर्दुरितानि परासुव।
यद्भद्रं तन्न आसुव॥
Vishvaani deva savitar-duritaani paraa-suvaa.
Yad-bhadran tanna aasuva.2
O Radiant Benefactor of all, You are the Creator of all the inanimate and animate and all worlds. You are the force that makes every atom and molecule exist and co-exist. Please grant me the strength to rise above and eliminate harmful and destructive habits and influences, and, O Lord, please bestow upon us all that is righteous and enriching.

O Radiant Life-Giver,
Ruler of all realms, of the living and still,
You are the endless, cosmic hum,
The energy that animates the dust and the will.
We ask you, cleanse us of our vice,
And every shadow, every stain.
Bestow upon us all that’s right,
And let a blessed life remain.
विश्वानि whole, complete, universal, देव illuminated/radiant God सवितः creator, the power and force within all forces, the nucleus of power दुरितानि vice, negative habits and influences. परासुव dispel, remove, take far away, take away (from me) यत् whatever भद्रम् blessed, good, welfare, prosperity तत् that नः to us आसुव provide
हिरण्यगर्भः समवर्तताग्रे भूतस्य जातः पतिरेक आसीत्।
स दाधार पृथिवीं द्यामुतेमां कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम॥
Hiraṇya-garbhah samavar-tataagre
bhootasya jaatah patir-eka aaseet.
Sa daadhaar prithiveem dyaam-utemaam
kasmai devaaya haviṣhaa vidhema. 3
That golden pure light-like One existed even before this cycle of creation. From the presence and will power of the Almighty Father came the world, into wonderful formative creation, with light and purpose. He created and He sustains it all; the earth, the planets, the sun and the cosmos. Who else is worthy of our worship and adoration?4

Before this cycle of creation’s dawn,
The pure and radiant source of life was drawn.
The singular, illustrious Master now,
To whom all things in the created world must bow.
He holds our Earth within His steady hand,
And vast cosmos that we cannot understand.
And when this universe has ceased to be,
He will remain for all eternity.
To that divine and blissful One we turn,
With deepest reverence our spirits yearn.
No one else is worthy of our adoration.
हिरण्यगर्भः self-effulgent creator; also, golden womb (pure and rich source of all existence) सम्वर्तत् (state of) existence, the reality of existence, as exists अग्रे before the creation of the physical universe भूतस्य The created world. That which is created जातः well-known, illustrious पतिः Master, father एक One (singularity), without duality आ that is/was (presence) सः He स is दाधार sustains पृथिवीं earth, planets द्याम् sun/moon – the celestial bodies; also the galaxies in space उत् and इमाम् this कस्मै blissful कस्मै for whom? (the contextual rhetoric question: ‘for whom?’) देवाय serving (God), longing for हविषा sanctuary, fit for purpose, fit for sacrifice (oblation) विधेम worship, adore
य आत्मदा बलदा यस्य विश्व उपासते प्रशिषं यस्य देवाः।
यस्य च्छायाऽमृतं यस्य मृत्युः कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम॥
Ya aatmadaa baladaa yasya vishva
upaasate prashiṣham yasya devaah.
Yasya chhaayaa-‘mritam yasya mrityuḥ
kasmai devaaya haviṣhaa vidhema.5
O Supreme Soul, your Supreme might uphold the entire world and all of creation. All follow and adore your rules and natural laws, O illustrious one. From within your shelter, we get the choice of the nectar of life (happiness of wisdom) or death (ignorance). O Benevolent One, No one else is worthy of our worship and adoration?

Creation stands: the seen and the unknown.
The worlds we see, and realms beyond our sight,
Are held within Your pure and perfect light.
The universe, in flawless order, turns,
While at Your hand, the soul a choice now learns:
The deathless bliss that from true knowledge flows,
Or spiritual death where dark-grown ignorance grows.
As guardian kind, the freedom is our own,
To choose the path on which our seed is sown.
None else is worthy of our adoration.
य who, that one, the one who आत्मदा granting life and breath, supreme soul, bestower of wisdom about the Supreme Soul बलदा strength-giving, power-giving, powerful यस्य whose विश्व world, all, (all of everything – entire world) उपासते adore, worship प्रशिषं rule, order, direction देवाः illuminated one, bestower of happiness, God, highest order of existence छाया shelter अमृतम् nectar, immortality मृत्युः death, misery, ignorance, hell कस्मै blissful कस्मै for whom? (the contextual rhetoric question: ‘for whom?’) देवाय serving (God), longing for हविषा sanctuary, fit for purpose, fit for sacrifice (oblation) विधेम worship, adore
यः प्राणतो निमिषतो महित्वैक इद्राजा जगतो बभूव।
य ईशे अस्य द्विपदश्चतुष्पदः कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम॥
Yah praaṇato nimiṣhato mahit-vaika
idraajaa jagato babhoova.
Ya eeshe asya dvipadash-chatuṣhpadah
kasmai devaaya haviṣhaa vidhema.6
The animate and inanimate forms are all due to the greatness of the One Almighty Ruler of the entire world and all forms of physical existence. He is the one who creates the varied forms of life. No one else is worthy of our worship and adoration?

His singular greatness makes them known.
The one Almighty King’s decree,
Is witnessed in all we can see.
The sovereign Lord of every form,
Through sunlit calm and raging storm.
From beings with two feet, or with four,
His rule extends forevermore.

With deepest reverence, casting out all fear.

यः who, that one, the one who प्राणतो breathing, living, animate निमिषतो non-breathing, inanimate महित्व due to the glory एक one इत् only राजा ruler जगतः entire world बभूव is, the act of being, becoming, arising, the place of being (भूः physical existence) ईशे creates अस्य of this द्विपदः bipeds चतुष्पदः quadrupeds कस्मै blissful कस्मै for whom? (the contextual rhetoric question: ‘for whom?’) देवाय serving (God), longing for हविषा sanctuary, fit for purpose, fit for sacrifice (oblation) विधेम worship, adore
येन द्यौरुग्रा पृथिवी च दृढ़ा येन स्वः स्तभितं येन नाकः।
यो अन्तरिक्षे रजसो विमानः कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम॥
Yena dyaur-ugraa prithivee cha driḍhaa
yena svah stabhitam yena naakah.
Yo antarikshe rajaso vimaanah
kasmai devaaya haviṣhaa vidhema.7
Who provides the space, the heavens, sun, moon, etc, that are inspiring (impressively large)/purposeful. Who provides the earth and the planets are borne within (the space). Who provides physical stability to all of creation? Who maintains and upkeeps everything, and provides emancipation of our souls. Who provides the vast, wide space that contains the levitating, self-standing planets? It is the Almighty one. No one else is worthy of our worship and adoration.

The awe-inspiring heavens bright,
The steadfast earth, held firm by might.
He is the source of stable grace,
And frees the soul from time and space.
He fashioned space, a vast design,
Where worlds on their own courses shine.
To our one, divine, Almighty Lord, we accord,
None else is worthy of our adoration.
येन whereby, by which द्यौ galaxies, space, atmosphere, space उग्रा formidable/powerful पृथिवी earth, planets च and दृढ़ा bears (as in upholds); holds up, takes the weight of स्वः All-pervading, Omnipresent, Cause of – and – existence itself; bliss, perfection (Svar loka/swarga/heavenly). It is a subtle level of consciousness स्तभित maintain, fixed, established नाकः heavenly, emancipation यो who अन्तरिक्षे in space रजसः planets, worlds, cosmic bodies (रजसः king, throne, leadership, one ruler) विमानः levitating and rotating, “flying palace”, suspended (in space) but in animation कस्मै blissful कस्मै for whom? (the contextual rhetoric question: ‘for whom?’) देवाय serving (God), longing for हविषा sanctuary, fit for purpose, fit for sacrifice (oblation) विधेम worship, adore
प्रजापते न त्वदेतान्यन्यो विश्वा जातानि परिताबभूव।
यत्कामास्ते जुहुमस्तन्नो अस्तु वयं स्याम पतयो रयिणाम्॥
Prajaapate na tvade-taan-yanyo
vishvaa jaataani paritaa-babhoova.
Yat-kaamaaste juhumas-tanno astu
vayam syaama patayo rayee-ṇaam.8
O Lord of all, there is none other than you. You are the excelling force within each particle of all of creation. Through your grace our noble desires are fulfilled. May we be in control (like a father) of our life, our luxury, and our wealth.

O Lord of all, there is no one but Thee,
The force within each particle we see.
By your kind grace our noble wants are met,
And worthy prayers, you never will forget.
May we, like fathers, wisely take control,
Of life and wealth, to make our spirits whole.
प्रजापते Lord of all, Creator न not, no (negative prefix) त्वत् than you एतानि these अन्य other विश्वा world, all, (all of everything – entire world) जातानि that which is created परितः on all sides is, the act of being, becoming, arising, the place of being (भूः physical existence) यत् whichever कामः desire ते you जुहुमः pray for तत् that नः our अस्तु may be so, so be it वयम् we स्याम may be so, so be it पतयो lord, ruler, leader रयिणाम् wealth
स नो बन्धुर्जनिता स विधाता धामानि वेद भुवनानि विश्वा।
यत्र देवा अमृतमानशानास्तृतीये धामन्नध्यैरयन्त॥
Sa no bandhur-janitaa sa vidhaataa
dhaamaani veda bhuvanaani vishvaa.
Yatra devaa amritam-aana-shaanaas
triteeye dhaaman-adhair-ayanta.9
He is our brother/friend, the Creator who creates everything and all the natural activity/action of the world. He knows the intricate details of everyone and everything. He is the unique one, ever-blissful and ever-present everywhere. That unique Master is the source of inspiration for the illuminated persons. May we attain eternal bliss.

The one who crafts the cosmic tide.
He knows each realm, each secret heart,
And understands each living part.
From highest bliss, a light descends,
To guide the wise, His love extends.
Through grace divine, may we then rise,
To endless life beyond the skies.
स he that Almighty नो to us, for us; ours बन्धुः brother जनितः creator विधाता creator of all things and all actions धामानि domain, dwelling (birth, place and names) law, appearance वेद knows भुवनानि people, existence, living things, the world विश्वा world, all, (all of everything – entire world) यत्र wherever, if, as, on the occasion of – (also used to explain ‘in which’) देवा bestower of happiness, God, also, scholars and illuminated wise persons अमृतम् immortality emancipation, nectar आनशानः attaining तृतीये unique, in the third – or full of bless धामन् abode, place, source of emancipation अधैरयन्त move freely
अग्ने नय सुपथा राये असमान् विश्वानि देव वयुनानी विद्वान।
युयोध्यस्मज्जुहुराणमेनो भूयिष्ठां ते नम उक्तिं विधेम॥
Agne naya supathaa raaye asmaan
vishvaani deva vayunaani vidvaan.
Yuyo-dhyasmaj-juhuraaṇam-eno
bhoo-yiṣh-ṭhaan te nama uktim vidhema.10
O source of energy, may your path of righteousness bring us riches/wealth/luxury. O Universal Master, bless us with exemplary, dutiful actions and all-encompassing knowledge. Cast away from us any belittling, debasing, and sinful tendencies. To you, I give my profound salutations, praise, adoration, and worship.

Meaning of Vishwani Deva mantra11
हे सकल जगत के उत्पत्तिकर्ता समग्र ऐश्वर्ययुक्त शुद्धस्वरूप सब सुखों के दाता परमेश्वर। आप कृपा करके हमारे सम्पूर्ण दुर्गुण, दुर्वास्यं और दुखों को दूर कीजिये जो कल्याणकारक गुण, कर्म, स्वभाव और पदार्थ हैं वह सब हम को प्राप्त कराइये।
He sakal jagat ke utpatti kartaa samagra-aishvar-yukta suddh-svaroop sab sukho ke daataa parmeshvar. Aap kripa karke hamaare sampoorṇ durguṇ, durvyasan aur dukho ko door kijiye. Jo kalyaaṇ-kaarak guṇ, karm, svabhav aur padaarth hai, ve sab ham ko praapt karaa-i-ye.
O Lord, Progenitor, Creator of the Universe, Source of all prosperity, Self-illumined, Giver of happiness, we pray Thee, O Father, to wipe off all our vices, evil propensities, and distress, and confer upon us all the virtues. Create the impulse of good deeds and righteous nature, and provide us with other resources that may bring bliss unto us all.
Iti eeshvar stuti praarthana upaasanaa
Here ends the eeshvar stuti praarthana upaasanaa
- These 8 mantras contain the circle of prayer: 1) Stuti – Glorification of God; recognizing His qualities, and imbibing in His greatness; 2) Prarthana – Prayers to God, petitioning His Grace and Blessing to fulfill our desires; and 3) Upaasana – (after recognizing His greatness, after expressing our desires), then (desire-less and free from attachment and wants) we become one with Him, Communion or spiritual unity is the absolute aim of the devotee.
