Vedic Havan

We contemplate the Almighty One—Self-existent, All-Intelligent, and All-pervading. We recognize the Eternal Basis of Life (Bhooḥ), the Boundless Intelligence (Bhuvaḥ) that removes all suffering, and the Source of Supreme Bliss (Svaḥ) as the foundation for the work we are about to initiate.

As vast as heavens and the space above,
As wide as earth, sustained by Law and Love;
From Thee, O Lord, all elements descend,
On whom the systems of the world depend.

Upon this earth where noble souls draw near,
I light the flame with spirit pure and clear;
To transform matter and to clear the way,
We start the sacred work of fire today.

We recognize that the vast expanse of the Cosmos (Dyauḥ) and the stability of the Earth (Pṛithivee) are sustained by a precise, immutable order. Upon this dedicated ground of action (devayajani), I establish (aadadhe) this fire. We acknowledge the fire’s capacity to consume and transform (annaadam), dispersing the essence of our materials into the atmosphere for our collective sustenance and environmental purification.

Rise up, O flame, with radiant energy,
To manifest this sacred liturgy;
Refine the gifts we offer in the fire,
And elevate each noble, pure desire.

May we as one in this assembly stand,
United as a dedicated band;
With wise and learned souls we take our seat,
To make this selfless sacrifice complete.

We ignite this fire to act as a radiating catalyst for our selfless actions. As the flame grows, we accept it as a visual reminder to remain energetic and alert (Prati-jaagṛhi) and efficient in our service. May our personal growth and our public welfare (Iṣhṭaa-poorte) be successfully unified. In this shared space (sadhastha), let us congregate with learned minds (Devaaḥ) to fulfill our collective, righteous duties with total focus.

उद्बुध्यस्व: Become brightly active, arise अग्ने fire (the medium of energy) प्रतिजागृहि Continue with efficiency and intensity त्वम् you इष्टापूर्ते The fusion of personal spiritual work (Iṣhṭa) and social/public welfare (Poorta) संसृजेथाम् May these efforts be successfully unified or accomplished अयम् this च and अस्मिन् in this सधस्थे In this gathering, shared space अद्युत् honestly obtained अस्मिन् in this विश्वे all देवा illuminated persons यजमानः performer च and सीदत Let us reside, congregate in this focus
