Jaatkarma Sanskaara

इन्द्र श्रेष्ठांनि द्रविणानि धेहि चित्तिं दक्षस्य सुभगत्वमस्मे ।
पोषं रयीणामरिष्टिं तनूनां स्वाद्मानं वाचः सुदिनत्वमह्नाम् ॥

Indra shreṣhthaani draviṇaani dhehi
chittim dakshasya subhagatvam-asme.
Poṣham rayeeṇaam-ariṣhṭim tanoonaam
svaadmaanam vaachah sudi-natvam-ahnaam. ¹

O ever-present Supreme God, please bless us with the ability to gain wealth through moral and truthful means. Do bless us all with prosperity and the ability to sustain our prosperity. Grant us your blessing of good fortune and the ability to prolong and sustain our fortune. Please bless us with good health and truthful and proper speech. May our minds be focused in building good skill and knowledge. May all of our days be blessed by you, O Lord.

इन्द्र God, ever-present One, all-powerful ष्रेष्ठानि best, superior, outstanding द्रविणानि wealth, power, strength धेहि give, grant us चित्तिम् of the mind, intelligence, wisdom, purpose, nature दक्षस्य dexterity, ability, capability सुभगत्वम् welfare, prosperity, favor, cause, opulence अस्मे me, mine पोषम् nurture, wealth, thriving, abundance, supporting रयीणाम् wealth अरिष्टिम् security, protection तनूनाम् body, embodiment, life स्वाद्मानम् preference, sweetness, properly वाचः speech, words सुदिनत्वम् best of seasons, auspicious times अह्नाम् speedily, soon, days

अस्मे प्र यन्धि मघवन्नृजीषिन्निन्द्र रायो विश्ववारस्य भूरेः ।
अस्मे शतं शरदो जीवसे धा अस्मे वीराञ्छश्वत इन्द्र शिप्रिन् ॥

Asme pra yandhi maghavann rijeeṣhinn-indra
raayo vishva-vaarasya bhooreh.
Asme shatam sharado jeevase dhaa asme
veeraan-chhashvata indra shiprin. ²

O Benevolent Lord, you are the giver of peace, joy, wealth, health, and all worldly joys. Please bless us with your abundant riches and grant us a long and healthy life. O Lord, please bless us with noble and good companions who are always progressive thinkers.

अस्मे me, mine प्र very, very much यन्धि grant, give, cause, control मघवन् Munificent God, benevolent god ऋजीषिन्निन्द्र God, the giver of peace and joy रायः wealth विश्ववारस्य worldly treasure, worldly wealth, choices भूरेः abundant, much, many शतम् hundred शरदः years जीवसे live, life धाः put, give, cause, provide वीरान् brave ones, heroes शश्वतः all, continuous, each शिप्रिन् forward facing, forward seeking

ओम् अश्मा भव परशुर्भव हिरण्यमस्तृतं भव ।
वेदो वै पुत्र नामासि स जीव शरदः शतम् ॥

Om ashmaa bhava parshur-bhava
hiraṇyam-astritam bhava.
Vedo vai putra naamaasi
sa jeeva sharadah shatam. ³

O Child, your confidential name is Veda. You are born with wisdom. May you be blessed with a long and healthy life. May you be blessed to be strong and firm in life and life’s decisions. May you be as sharp and powerful as a weapon in eradicating lies and falsehoods. May you be invincible in upholding the wisdom of the Vedas in you.

अश्मा firm, rock-like, mountain भव you be परशुर् sharp weapon, axe हिरण्यम golden, precious अस्तृतं invincible, indestructible वेदो Veda वै you पुत्र son, child नामासि name स he/she/you जीव life शरदः year शतम् hundred

ओं त्र्यायुषं जमदग्नेः कश्यपस्य त्र्यायुषम् ।
यद्देवेषु त्र्यायुषं तन्नो अस्तु त्र्यायुषम् ॥

Om tryaayusham jamadagneh
kashyap-asya tryaayusham.
Yad-deveṣhu tryaayusham
tanno’astu tryaayusham.⁵

By the Grace of the Almighty, may you be blessed with thrice my life span, three times my energy, three times the power of senses, three times the company of the wise and blessings of God.

त्र्यायुषं threefold vital power; god-designed three stages of life (childhood, youth, old age); three times lifespan जमदग्नेः light of the eyes, senses, ablaze/glowing fire, agnihotra कश्यपस्य inspired by God यत् which देवेषु wise ones, godly scholars तत् that नः us अस्तु let it be, so be it
