Jaatkarma Sanskaara

This verse prays for the warding off of dieases

ओं शण्डामर्का उपवीरः शौण्डिकेय उलूखलः ।
मलिम्लुचो द्रोणासश्च्यवनो नश्यतादितः स्वाहा ॥
इदं शण्डामर्काभ्यामुपवीराय शौण्डिकेयायोलूखलाय मलिम्लुचाय द्रोणेभ्यश्च्यवनाय इदन्न मम ॥

Om shaṇḍaamarkaa upa-veerah
shouṇḍikeya ulookhalah.
Malim-lucho droṇaasach-yavano
nashyataaditah svaahaa.
Idam shaṇḍaamarkaa-bhyaam-upaveeraaya
shouṇḍikeyaayo-lukhalaaya malim-luchaaya
droṇebhyash-chyavanaaya idanna mama.¹

May there be no diseases, either hereditary or non-hereditary disease, that place our child at risk. May our child be protected from all the known and unknown, common or rare illnesses or diseases. Please protect our child, O Lord, from genetic illness, gender complexity, mental illness, cancer, deformity, abnormality or any other disease that can threaten our child’s health.

नश्यतात् to disappear शण्डामर्काः hermaphroditism (this is a rare disorder that is difficult to diagnose), it can lead to malignant cancerous growth उपवीरः mental illness शौण्डिकेयः Hypertrichosis (a rare condition that causes excessive hair growth on the body) उलूखलः deformity of joints मलिम्लुचः frozen or stiff joints द्रोणासः deformed mouth and face च्यवनः shaking of the body or limbs

ओम् आलिखन्ननिमिषः किंवदन्त उपश्रुतिर्हर्यक्षः कुम्भीशत्रुः पात्रपाणिर्नृमणिर्हन्त्रीमुखः सर्षपारुणश्च्यवनो नश्यतादितः स्वाहा॥
इदमालिखतेऽनिमिषाय किंवदद्भ्य उपश्रुतये हर्यक्षाय कुम्भीशत्रवे पात्रपाणये नृमणये हन्त्रीमुखाय सर्षपारुणाय च्यवनाय इदन्न मम ॥

Om aalikh-annanimi-ṣhah kimvadanta
upa-shrutir-haryakshah kumbhee-shatruh
paatra-paaṇir-nrimaṇir-hantri-mukhah
sarṣhapaa-ruṇa chyavano
nashyataaditah svaahaa.
Idam aalaikhate aanimiṣhaaya kim-vadadbhyah
upa-shru-taye haryakshaaya kumbhee-shatrave
paatra-paaṇaye nrimaṇaye hantree-mukhaaya
sarṣha-paaru-ṇaaya idanna mama.²

May the people who are evil and have evil tendencies stay far away from our children. May our child grow and develop without fearing these people, and may they never impact our child. May there never be the threat of those who cause harm through speaking, writing, or other forms of communication; may there be no threat or harm from gossipers and eavesdroppers, from those who are jaundiced and prejudiced, from those who exploit others for their gain, from those who are evil, from those who beg for everything, from those who kill and cause bodily harm, from those who constantly change their words, and from those who are not righteous and not religious.

आलिखन् those who cause harm through writing अनिमिषः one who ruthlessly causes harm, one who by night or day is harmful to others किंवदन्तः those who always speak bad things of others उपश्रुतयः gossipers and eavesdroppers हर्यक्षः jaundiced and prejudiced कुम्भी whose who exploit others for their personal gain शत्रुः enemies पात्रपानी beggars with empty bowls नृमणिः killers, murderers हन्त्रीमुखः those with violent words/speech सर्षपारुणः like a chameleon who changes with every conversation च्यवनः non-righteous and non-religious persons.
