Jaatkarma Sanskaara

कोऽसि कतमोऽस्येषोऽस्यमृतोऽसि।
आहस्पत्यं मासं प्रविशासौ ॥

Om ko’si katamo’si eṣho’si-amrito’si.
Aahas-patyam maasam pravisha-asou.¹

O Dear Child, as you grow, may you be blessed to always contemplate on the glory of the Almighty Lord, who has blessed us with everything. God is the eternal One – He is of who we are and He is from where we have come.

कः who असि is कतमः which असि is एषः this असि is अमृत immortality, eternity, heaven असि is आहस्पत्यं belonging to God मासं moon, months, time प्रविशासौ begin, attain

स त्वाह्ने परिददात्वहस्त्वा रात्र्यै परिददातु रात्रिस्त्वाहोरात्राभ्यां परिददात्वहोरात्रौ
त्वार्द्धमासेभ्यः परिदत्तामर्द्धमासास्त्वा मासेभ्यः परिददतु मासास्त्वर्तुभ्यः
परिददत्वृतवस्त्वा संवत्सराय परिददतु संवत्सरस्त्वायुषे जरा परिददात्वसौ ॥

Sa tvaah-ne paridadaat-vahastvaa
raatrai paridadaatu raatristvaah ahoraatraa-bhyaam
paridadaatva ahoraatrou tvaarddhamaa-sebhyah
paridattaam-ardha-maasaastvaa
maasebhyah paridadatu maasaastva-ritubhyah
paridadat-vrita-vastvaa samvatsaraaya paridadatu
samvat-sarastvaa-yuṣhe jaraayai paridadaatvasou. ²

May God bless you with a long life of continued health and development. May your days and nights, months, seasons and years, and stages of life all smoothly roll into each other as you continue to grow and spiritually evolve. As each day rolls into the night, the days and nights become months, and the months become years, may you continually develop physically, mentally, and spiritually.

स by त्व you अह्ना soon, speedily परिददात् grant, bestow वाहस् carry into, bear, worship त्वम् you रात्र्यै to the night अहोरात्रभ्यां day and night continually अहोरात्र day and night अर्द्ध abundance मासेभ्यः months, next month मासास् month by month मासेभ्यः month by month continually तुभ्यम् to you ऋतवः enlightened, wise, pious संवत्सराय yearly संवत्सरस्त्व for you year by year आयुषय long life जरा age परिददात् grant, bestow त्वम् you असौ you (directly or by name)

ओम् अङ्गादङ्गात्सम्स्रवसि हृदयादधिजायसे ।
प्राणं ते प्राणेन सं दधामि जीव मे यावदायुषम् ॥

Angaadangaat-sam-sravasi
hridayaa-dadhi-jaayase
Praaṇam te praaṇena sam-dadhaami
jeeva me yaavad-aayuṣham. ³

We gave you our DNA, we give you life from every limb of our body. We give you love from our heart, we give you vitality and breath from our own breath. We give you your life through ours. May you be blessed with a long life and may health accompany you for your entire life.

अङ्ग component, constituent, limb, contiguous संश्रवस् fame, glory, renown हृदय heart, center दधिज produced from आयस with effort, with intent प्राणं vital breath ते to you एन that, this संदधामि bestow जीव life मे me यावदायुषम् for the whole of life

अङ्गादङ्गात्सम्भवसि हृदयादधिजायसे ।
वेदो वै पुत्रनामासि स जीव शरदः शतम् ॥

Angaadangaat sambhavasi
hridayaadadhi jaayase.
Vedo vai putra-naamaasi
sa jeeva sharadah shatam.⁴

We gave you our DNA, we give you life from every limb of our body. We give you love from our heart, we give you vitality and breath from our own breath. We give you your life through ours. O Child, you are born with wisdom. May wisdom accompany you for a hundred years.

अश्मा भव परशुर्भव हिरण्यमस्तृतं भव ।
आत्माऽसि पुत्र मा मृथाः स जीव शरदः शतम् ॥

Ashmaa bhava parshur-bhava
hiraṇyam-astritam bhava.
Aatmaa’si putra maa mrithaah
sa jeeva sharadah shatam.⁵

O Child, may you grow to reflect the precious wisdom of the Vedas. May you always be invincible in upholding truth, may you be as firm as a rock to withstand any criticism and ill-will, and may you be sharp in warding off untruth and injustice. May you live for a hundred years without ill health.

पशूनां त्वा हिङ्कारेणाभिजघ्राम्यसौ ॥

Pashoonaam tvaa hinkaareṇa-abhi-jagraami-asau.⁶
