जलसिञ्चनम् – Jala-sinchanam

Jala Sinchana: Sprinkling water in different directions1

In the Eastern direction2:
ओम् अदितेऽनुमन्यसव

Om adite-anumanya-sva.3

O aadite Lord of Supreme Power and Giver of Bliss, anumanyasvah please grant our wishes. May we be blessed, O Blissful One.

अदिते unimpairable, incomparable अनुमन्यस्व fulfil/accede to (our wishes) 

In the Western direction4:
ओम् अनुमतेऽनुमन्यस्व

Om anumate-anumanya-sva.5

O anumataye agreeable, positive force, anumanyasvah please fulfil our desires. May we be always agreeable and positive.

अनुमते agreeable, also – one who consents अनुमन्यस्व fulfil our wishes

In the Northern direction6:
ओं सरस्वत्यनुमन्यस्व

Om sarasvaty-anumanya-sva.7

Sarasvati O All-knowing one, anumanyasvah please fulfil our desires. May we be blessed with knowledge.

सरस्वती Giver of wisdom, All-knowing One अनुमन्यस्व fulfil our desires

Around, in all directions8:
ओं देव सवितः प्रसुव यज्ञं प्रसुव यज्ञपतिं भगाय
दिव्यो गन्धर्वः केतपूः केतं नः पुनातु वाचस्पतिर्वाचं नः स्वदतु

Om deva savitah prasuva yajyam
prasuva yajya-patim bhagaaya.
Divyo gandharvah keta-pooh
ketan nah punaatu
vaachas-patir-vaachan nah svadatu.9

O devah Illuminated savitah force of creation, please prasuva bless this yajyam selfless action as well as the yajyapatim persons who perform such selfless sacrifices. O divyah gandharvah ketapooh Divine skilful purifier of thoughts, please purify ketam nah our thoughts. O vaachaspatih provider and protector of speech, punaatu purify and svadatu sweeten nah our vaacham speech.

देव illuminated/radiant God सवितः creator, power of animation of every cell प्रसुव promote, encourage, build, bless यज्ञम् the yajya, act of selfless sacrifice performer of yajya प्रसुव promote, encourage, build, bless यज्ञपतिम् the performer भगाय for prosperity देवाः divine गन्धर्वः source of inspiration; also, skilful persons (who inspire with their skill) केतपूः purifier of intellect, purifying the desire or will कतम् understanding नः for us पुनातु purify वाचस्पतिः protector of speech, also, the person who is speaking वाचम् speech नः us, for us स्वदतु may sweeten

  1. Water is sprinkled in different directions, outside of the Kunda. The significance of water in Agnihotra is manifold: 1) Washing/cleaning – may the mind be washed clean of any negative; 2) Water represents cooling (opposing) force to fire – where there is fire there should be water; 3) Where the fires of passions arise there should be the cooling temperament of good senses; (4) Water flows from the ultimate source of Godhead (a reference to Ganga flowing from the head of Shiva); (5) Water also represent the force of God – e.g., the great flood of Manu. (6) Water is an alien force to earth that provided the catalyst to life.
