Gems from the Vedas

Ganaanaam tvaa ganapatim havaamahe

This verse is the opening mantra of a hymn in the second Mandala of the Rig Veda. It is a powerful invocation addressed to the importance of sacred speech and divine wisdom. This mantra is famously considered the Vedic root of the later Puranic prayers to Ganapati or Ganesha, as it uses the title gaṇapatiṃ (“leader of the groups”). It is a prayer for wisdom, right leadership, and divine presence.

Rig Veda 2.23.1

We invoke You, the One Supreme God, who is the true Harmonizer of all cosmic hosts; the ultimate Seer from whom all other seers draw their wisdom, and whose Truth is the highest standard of all knowledge. You are the Supreme Sovereign over all sacred knowledge. O Supreme Consciousness, O God, you give us the ability to control our very thought, the most sublime speech; please hear our call, give us Your protection, and bless us with the ability to be conscious of Your constant presence in the temple of our awareness.

The Principle of Cosmic Order

This mantra is a sophisticated invocation to awaken specific universal principles of the One Supreme Reality within ourselves and the cosmos.

1. Gaṇaanaaṃ Gaṇapati : The Principle of Cosmic Order

The mantra begins by invoking the Gaṇapatim, the “one who is the master/leader of the groups (gaṇa).” Philosophically, the gaṇa represent all the enumerated categories and organized systems that constitute reality. This includes the hosts of celestial bodies, the groupings of natural laws, the species of living beings, and even the troops of thoughts and senses within our own consciousness. Creation is not a chaos; it is a cosmos, an ordered system of countless interconnected groups.

The Gaṇapati principle is the Supreme Intelligence that presides over this vast, ordered multiplicity. It is the unifying consciousness that ensures harmony among all these disparate parts. To invoke this attribute of the One is to appeal to the very principle of order, coherence, and right leadership that governs the universe. It is a prayer to align our own lives—our thoughts, words, and actions—with this divine cosmic harmony, asking for the “master of all” to bring order to the chaos of our own minds.

2. Kaviṃ Kaveenaam: The Supreme Source of Wisdom

Next, the mantra addresses the Absolute as Kaviṃ Kaveenaam, the “Seer of all seers” or “Poet among poets.” A Kavi in Vedic terms is a visionary, one who perceives truths beyond the grasp of the ordinary senses. The verse posits that all instances of human genius, intuition, and enlightened wisdom are but sparks from a single, central fire. All the great sages and visionaries (Kaviṃ Kaveenaam) are channels for the one ultimate Seer (Kavi).

This is a profound statement about the nature of knowledge. It suggests that true wisdom is not created by the human intellect, but is perceived when the mind becomes aligned with this universal source of inspiration. The epithet upamaśhravastamam (“of most exalted renown” or “the highest standard of hearing”) reinforces this, establishing this principle as the ultimate benchmark of all knowledge and truth. Invoking this attribute is a plea to transcend mere logic and tap into this boundless reservoir of intuitive, inspired wisdom.

3. Jyeṣṭharaajaṃ Brahmaṇaam: The Sovereignty over Consciousness

The verse invokes the principle as the jyeṣhṭharaajaṃ (“supreme king”) and brahmaṇaspate (“lord”) of bráhmaṇaaṃ (sacred prayers/speech). In this context, brahman signifies the foundational consciousness, the sacred vibratory power of the Divine Word that underlies creation.

Therefore, this attribute is the ultimate authority over consciousness itself. It is the intelligence that governs all sacred thought, spiritual knowledge, and potent utterance. To invoke the “Lord of Prayer” is to seek mastery over the inner world of thought and intention. It is a prayer that our own consciousness be ruled not by the ego or fleeting impulses, but by this supreme, divine principle, ensuring that our thoughts and words are imbued with truth, power, and sanctity.

4. Aa naḥ śhṛiṇvannSeeda Saadanam: The Manifestation of Divine Presence

The final line translates this profound philosophy into an intimate, experiential reality. The plea, aa naḥ śhṛiṇvann ootíbhiḥ (“hearing us, come with your protections”), affirms that this Supreme Reality is not deaf or indifferent, but is responsive to the sincere call of the seeker. The “protections” (ootíbhiḥ) are the practical benefits of aligning with these principles: the harmony, wisdom, and mental clarity that protect us from confusion and despair.

The culminating request, seeda saadanam (“be seated in this sacred place”), is the ultimate goal. The “sacred place” (saadanam) is not merely a physical altar; it is the prepared heart and purified consciousness of the devotee. It is a humble and powerful invitation for these divine attributes of order, wisdom, and sovereign consciousness to become the enthroned, ruling presence in the temple of our own awareness. It is a prayer for the Absolute to become a living reality within.
