Gems from the Vedas

Aa brahman brahmano – May noble ones be born among us

This powerful mantra from the Yajur Veda is a profound and comprehensive prayer, seeking the holistic well-being and prosperity of a nation or community. It moves beyond individualistic desires to encompass the entire fabric of society, envisioning an ideal state of collective human and environmental flourishing.

The prayer specifically invokes blessings for:

Intellectual & Spiritual Leadership: The birth of wise ones (braahmaṇo) with divine lustre (brahmavarchasee), who are well versed in the Vedas.

Brave & Capable Protectors: The emergence of heroic warriors (raajanyaḥ śhooro), skilled in warfare (iṣhavyo’tivyaadhee mahaarathaḥ).

Economic Abundance: Healthy economy and national wealth (expressed contextually as doghree dhenuḥ), infrastructure and transportation for food and other supplies (expressed contextually as voḍhaa’naḍvaan), and efficient fast transport (aaśhuḥ saptiḥ).

Balanced Society: The presence of industrious men and noble women, victorious leaders (jiṣhṇoo ratheṣṭhaaḥ), and polite, culturally sound youth (sabheyo yuvaa).

Environmental Harmony: Timely and abundant rains (vṛiṣhṭiḥ), leading to fruitful and plentiful vegetation (medhaḥ).

Overall Prosperity: A continuous increase in the spiritual and prosperous well-being of the people daily.

It is a vision of a harmonious society where spiritual wisdom, protective strength, economic stability, cultural excellence, and environmental balance are all divinely endowed and continuously fostered.

Yajur Veda 22.22

O Almighty Lord! Let there be born in my country such wise ones with divine lustre who are well versed in the Vedas; let there be born the heroic ones who are skilled in warfare. Let there be such natural resources to provide a healthy economy; let there be good infrastructure and fast and efficient transportation; let there be industrious and noble men and women. May there be seasonal rains, fruit-bearing trees, and abundant trees. May the spiritual and prosperous well-being of the people increase daily.

com from all sides ब्रह्मन् Supreme God ब्राह्मणः versed in Godliness, brahman, scholars, ब्रह्मवर्चस divine glory, splendour of the Almighty जायताम् women, wife, victory राष्ट्र nation राजनः nobility, patriotic शूरः brave, heroic इषव्ः skilled in weaponry, skilled in leading army अतिव्ाधी one who can lead and win battles महारथ excellent chariots, excellent mobility इति thus, so दोग्ध्री milk-giving, nourishing, nutriment-giving धेुः cow, producer of nutriments and food वोढा carrier, transport अनड्वा् cow, bull, means of transport of goods आशुः quick, fast सप्तिः yoke, steed, horse, transportation पुरन्धिरिति wife, with many sons ोषा girl, women जिष्णुः victorious रथेष्ठाः fighters, defenders सभेः clever, saintly, decent युवा youth, youthful यजमानस् performer of yajyas वीरःheroic, brave िकामे to heart’s content, desirous, pleasure नः our पर्जनः rain, rain-cloud वर्षतु rain फलवत् excellent crop, excellent fruits ओषधयः medicinal plants and products पच्यन्ताम् mature, ripen grow ोगक्षेम welfare, prosperity कल्पताम् competency, ability, bountiful

This mantra, interpreted as a direct appeal to the One Almighty Lord, offers a profound philosophical blueprint for an ideal human society and highlights the interconnectedness of all aspects of life under divine providence. It moves beyond a purely ritualistic interpretation to reveal universal principles of collective well-being.

1. The Almighty Lord as the Architect and Sustainer of Society:

The opening address “O Almighty Lord!” immediately establishes the One Supreme God as the ultimate source and benevolent orchestrator of all societal good. This means that not only are individual lives sustained by the Divine, but the very structure, health, and progress of a collective (raaṣhṭre) are dependent on divine grace and adherence to divine principles.

This vision rejects a purely secular or human-centric view of society, asserting that true and lasting prosperity (both spiritual and material) stems from aligning with the ultimate divine will and seeking its blessing.

2. The Pillars of a Virtuous Society: Wisdom, Courage, and Ethics:

The prayer begins with an emphasis on human capital, particularly virtuous leadership and capable citizenry.

Braahmaṇo brahmavarchasee – Wise ones with divine lustre: This signifies the paramount importance of spiritual and intellectual wisdom. Brahmavarchasa represents the radiant purity, deep insight, and moral authority that comes from being connected to the Supreme God (Brahman). Such individuals are the moral compass, the guardians of truth, and the guides for society’s spiritual evolution. These wise ones are well-versed in the Vedas (braahmaṇo), which refers to mastery of timeless spiritual truths, applicable across all ages.

Raajanyaḥ śhooro iṣhavyo’tivyaadhee mahaarathaḥ – Heroic ones skilled in warfare: This acknowledges the necessity of defense and righteous protection. It’s not a call for aggression, but for the emergence of brave, skilled individuals who can safeguard the social order and protect the vulnerable, embodying the Divine’s aspect of justice and protection.

This philosophical insight teaches that a truly thriving society is built on the twin pillars of enlightened wisdom and courageous action, both divinely inspired.

3. Holistic Prosperity: Economic, Social, and Environmental Harmony:

The mantra then broadens its scope to include the material and environmental foundations of a stable society:

Economic Welfare: दोघ्री धेुः Healthy economy (marked by possession of wealth and natural resources). Note – In historical times, a “milking cow” was one of the most significant symbols of wealth. It provided sustenance (milk, butter, curd), fertilizer, fuel, and its progeny further increased the family’s assets. Abundant milking cows directly signified prosperity, food security, and a thriving agricultural economy tied closely to natural resources (pastures, water). In the modern context, and in the context of usage in this verse, it refers to the Healthy Economy for the State/Country.

Infrastructure and Food and material transportation: वोढाऽनड्वाThe capacity and infrastructure for transportation for food and other supplies. Note: Throughout known history, the term “oxen” was used to denote transportation and means of moving items. In the modern context and the context used in this mantra, it is the capacity and infrastructure for transportation for food and other supplies. It represents efficient supply chains, robust networks, and the means to move resources where they are needed, which is critical for national well-being.

Efficient and effective transportation and movement of people आशुः सप्तिः The means for people to move any distance quickly and efficiently.

Leaders who are victorious in doing good and standing up for their people जिष्णुः रथेष्ठाः and healthy and honest people and future generations (सभेयुवा). This speaks to the social and cultural fabric. It emphasizes the value of hard work, ethical conduct, intellectual discourse, and the crucial role of virtuous individuals who embody and transmit cultural values, nurturing future generations. This is a prayer for a society rich in human quality and ethical interactions.

Seasonal rains, abundant crops, and abundant trees. This highlights the environmental harmony and sustainability. It acknowledges nature’s vital role in human prosperity and prays for the Divine’s blessing on the environment itself, ensuring a healthy ecosystem that directly supports human and animal life. This points to the deep ecological wisdom embedded in Vedic thought, recognizing humans as part of a larger interconnected web.

The Cumulative Goal: Spiritual and Prosperous Wellbeing Increasing Daily:

The concluding aspiration is the most powerful: May the spiritual and prosperous well-being of the people increase daily. This unites all the preceding elements. It’s not just about isolated blessings, but a continuous, upward trajectory of collective flourishing.

Spiritual well-being (ब्रह्मवर्चस) refers to the inner peace, wisdom, ethical living, and conscious connection to the Divine among the populace.

Prosperous well-being encompasses all material, social, and environmental advantages (implied through progeny and livestock, representing overall increase and wealth).

The prayer is a daily request for unified focus on the country. This signifies a dynamic, evolving society that is continually guided by divine grace and striving for greater harmony and perfection. It embodies the ideal of a Dharmic society where human endeavors are aligned with divine purpose, leading to universal happiness and spiritual advancement.

In summary, Yajur Veda 22.22 is a profound and holistic prayer for a divinely blessed society. It articulates a vision where the One Almighty Lord’s grace permeates every level of existence—from the wisdom of its leaders and the strength of its protectors to the abundance of its fields and the nobility of its people—all culminating in a continuous increase of both spiritual and material well-being for the entire collective.
