Poornaa darvi paraa pata – Uplift my integrity, valor and strength
The ancient mantras of the Vedas possess a remarkable ability to speak to us across millennia, offering wisdom that is as relevant today on this Monday morning as it was thousands of years ago. Yajur Veda 3.49 unlocks a powerful, modern philosophy that reframes a sacred ritual as a practical guide for purifying our world and our lives through conscious, ethical action.

1. The Perfect Offering (poorṇaa darvi)
The mantra begins with the principle of a perfect offering. The havan yajña (हवन यज्ञ), with its offerings or aahutis (आहुति), serves a literal purpose in purifying the atmosphere. The key to this is the poorṇāaa darvi (पूर्णा दर्वि), the “full ladle,” which symbolizes a complete, perfect, and wholehearted offering.
This extends beautifully beyond the fire-altar into our daily lives. The mantra guides us to ensure that every action we undertake is a “perfect aahuti.” This means offering our best in all that we do—not just in our worship, but in our work, our relationships, and our personal commitments. It is a call to act with fullness of heart and completeness of intention, understanding that these well-intentioned actions are what truly purify our personal and social environments.
2. The Universal Ripple Effect (paraa pata / punaraapata)
The verse describes the journey of this perfect offering. The aahuti “departs” or “rises” – paraa pata (परा पत): it rises to purify the air. At the same time, metaphorically, our selfless and complete actions “effervesce,” radiating outwards to create good results for ourselves and for others. This positive energy doesn’t just vanish; it uplifts the world around us.
This leads to the auspicious return: punaraa pata (पुनरा पत). This “coming back” is not a selfish gain. The beneficial effects are felt by everyone and everything. This is a profound understanding of Karma and interconnectedness. A single, pure action contributes to a cycle of universal well-being. The good we put out does not just return to us; it nourishes the entire ecosystem of life, which in turn nourishes us.
3. The Divine Exchange (vikreeṇaavahai): A World of Good Purpose
The concept of a divine exchange, vikreeṇaavahai (विक्रीणावहै), is understood here as a sacred pact to utilize all resources for a good purpose. The mantra speaks of exchanging iṣham (इषम्), or nourishment. This is a commitment that all objects and resources we use and are affected by in this exchange are dedicated to a beneficial goal. Nothing is wasted, and everything is used for a positive or beneficial purpose. This principle guides us to live consciously, seeing every resource we have—our time, our energy, our material possessions—as sacred tools to be used purposefully in this positive, life-sustaining exchange with the cosmos.
4. The Energy of Integrity (oorjam / śhatakrato)
The “energy” we receive, oorjam (ऊर्जम्), not just as vitality, but as integrity and honesty in our actions and intent. An action without integrity is weak, scattered, and ultimately draining. It is integrity that gives our actions true power and vigor. The prayer to increase this oorjam is therefore a prayer to strengthen our character, our moral fiber, and our authenticity.
This integrity is to be increased in śhatakrato (शतक्रतो)—”a hundredfold” or in manifold ways. The One Supreme Reality, the source of all power, supports us in applying and growing this energy of integrity in countless aspects of our lives. It is a promise that when we commit to a path of honesty and wholeness, the universe conspires in infinite ways to amplify that strength within us.
This Vedic verse serves as a comprehensive guide to creating a positive impact. It calls us to act wholeheartedly, trusting that our pure actions will create ripples of well-being for all. It guides us to use our resources purposefully and to cultivate the energy of integrity, which the divine will amplify in countless ways.
